Considering how culturally indispensable digital technology is today, it is ironic that computer-generated art was attacked when it burst onto the scene in the early 1960s. In fact, no other twentieth-century art form has elicited such a negative and hostile response. When the Machine Made Art examines the cultural and critical response to computer art, or what we refer to today as digital art. Tracing the heated debates between art and science, the societal anxiety over nascent computer technology, and the myths and philosophies surrounding digital computation, Taylor is able to identify the destabilizing forces that shape and eventually fragment the computer art movement.

Zambia stands out in Africa as one of the continent's most peaceful countries. In its early years as an independent state, Zambia became a regional bulwark against imperialism and colonial domination and South African apartheid. Today, it stands out as an important example of Africa's recent democratization, experiencing both incredible success as well as some notable setbacks. The country is also one of the most urbanized in Sub-Saharan Africa. As a result of this urban influx, Zambia's diverse ethno-linguistic groups interact regularly. Moreover, many contemporary Zambian households, especially those in cities, are also exposed to the media, technology, and influences of western urbanized cultures, from Internet cafes to hip hop music. The interesting ways that "tradition" and "modernity" conflict and combine in contemporary Zambia are prime considerations in this book. This book explores Zambia's culture, with an eye toward its historical experiences and its particular endowments. It focuses on how "traditional" and "modern" interact, and sometimes collide, in the country through topics such as religion, gender roles and family, cuisine, the arts, literature, and more. The major groups are examined to give the reader an idea about how many Zambians live.
Natural resource management by rural citizens in tropical regions is crucial both to the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem processes, but also to the the well-being and food security of the people that live there. This situation is especially acute in Africa where conflicts between habitat destruction and utilization can arise in areas which are important not only for biodiversity but for the long-term maintenance of ecosystems on which the people ultimately rely. There can also be conflicts between outside specialists and the indigenous knowledge of local communities. A holistic approach involving local peoples in management of their natural resources is therefore essential. A range of approaches to the problem is explored here in relation to natural resource management to local development and livelihoods, and the multi-functional nature of land-use. Major topics debated are the dichotomy between strictly protected areas and ones including human activity, people-centred rather than legally enforced conservation, market forces, and the interrelationships between agriculture and conservation. The book has 12 chapters, prepared by researchers actively involved in community aspects of natural resource management in Africa, and is based on an international workshop held in Niamey, Niger, in 2008. It will be of interest to all involved in the community approach to biodiversity conservation in less developed countries generally and not only in Africa as many of the issues addressed are pertinent globally. Capital, Accumulation, and Money: An Integration of Capital, Growth, and Monetary Theory is a book about capital and money. A root concept of capital is formulated that allows for most existing concepts of capital to be unified and related to one another in consistent fashion. Capital and monetary theory are integrated in a non-mathematical framework that imposes a number of constraints on the macro behavior of an economy, constraints which make for the straightforward understanding of such concepts as the real stock of money, real-balance effects, and the general price level. New and illuminating insights are also provided into aggregate supply and demand, natural and money rates of interest, the relationship between real and monetary economies, and economic growth and development. This fully expanded, revised, and updated edition features important new material on a variety of timely topics, including: * Factors leading to the financial meltdown and turmoil of 2007-09; * Why bubbles form in asset markets and how these impact on the real economy; * The importance of a lender-of-last-resort in times of financial stress; * Future financing and funding of the U. S. Social Security System. Additionally, the author offers a number of ideas for alleviating the severity, if not the avoidance altogether, of financial crises in the future. This is a book for those -- students (both graduate and undergraduate) and their teachers, investors, and the informed public -- who want an understanding of how economies and financial markets function, without an advanced degree in mathematics.
An examination of the modernization of the English and Welsh police during the interwar years, focusing upon the increasing professionalization of the police, the Federation, forensic work and the growth of traffic policing. The authors challenge the established viewpoint by arguing that this period saw significant changes in policing.
The Canon PowerShot G16 compact digital camera is the successor to the successful G15 and the first in the G-series to come equipped with built-in Wi-Fi. This facility makes it ideal for sharing images and video on social networking websites, or via email through the Canon Image Gateway. Images can also be uploaded using the maker's compatible iOS(R) or Android(t) device with the download of a free Canon CameraWindow app. The G16's 28 - 140mm wide-angle lens has an aperture range of f/1.8 - f/2.8, making it ideal for shooting in low-light conditions or for capturing a dramatic shallow depth-of-field with soft backgrounds. The camera features Canon's HS System, which combines a DIGIC 6 image processor and a 12.1-megapixel High-Sensitivity CMOS image sensor. Autofocus (AF) times and reduced shooting lag are improved over previous G-series models and continuous shooting speeds of up to 9.3 frames-per-second are possible. New shooting modes include Star mode for capturing the night sky: Star Nightscape will capture stars in a landscape image, while Star Trails will capture trails of stars in a still image; Star Time Lapse Movie will shoot continuous still images of stars and combine them into a video that replicates the motion of the stars in the sky.
Two prisoners are told that they will be brought to a room and seated so that each can see the other. Hats will be placed on their heads; each hat is either red or green. The two prisoners must simultaneously submit a guess of their own hat color, and they both go free if at least one of them guesses correctly. While no communication is allowed once the hats have been placed, they will, however, be allowed to have a strategy session before being brought to the room. Is there a strategy ensuring their release? The answer turns out to be yes, and this is the simplest non-trivial example of a hat problem. This book deals with the question of how successfully one can predict the value of an arbitrary function at one or more points of its domain based on some knowledge of its values at other points. Topics range from hat problems that are accessible to everyone willing to think hard, to some advanced topics in set theory and infinitary combinatorics. For example, there is a method of predicting the value "f"("a") of a function f mapping the reals to the reals, based only on knowledge of "f"'s values on the open interval ("a" 1, "a"), and for every such function the prediction is incorrect only on a countable set that is nowhere dense. The monograph progresses from topics requiring fewer prerequisites to those requiring more, with most of the text being accessible to any graduate student in mathematics. The broad range of readership includes researchers, postdocs, and graduate students in the fields of set theory, mathematical logic, and combinatorics. The hope is that this book will bring together mathematicians from different areas to think about set theory via a very broad array of coordinated inference problems. "
Bryozoa are among the most abundant yet least understood of phyla in the fossil record. These exclusively colonial animals can be traced back to the Ordovician as fossils and are common elements of sediments deposited in shallow marine environments. On occasion their calcareous skeletons are sufficiently numerous to produce bryozoan limestones. The potential of bryozoans in facies analysis, and their use in macroevolutionary studies, have both been widely recognised, but to date have been incompletely exploited. Bryozoan Paleobiology brings together the scattered research on living and fossil bryozoans in broad and profusely illustrated overview that will help students and researchers alike in understanding this fascinating group of animals. Beginning with the basics of bryozoan morphology, ecology and classification, the book progresses from the smallest scale of skeletal ultrastructure, to the largest of bryozoan distributions in time and space. On the way, topics such as the origin of zooidal polymorphism and macroevolutionary trends in colony forms are covered. Case studies illuminate these topics, and areas in which further research is particularly required are highlighted.
Usually, when we consider the information that is given in a household budget survey, we do so in terms of expenditures for different goods and services and how these relate to income, prices, and socio demographic factors such as age, family size, and education. Allocation of expenditures amongst different categories of consumption is seen as being determined by tastes and preferences acting in conjunction with a constraint imposed by prices and income. The parameters thus obtained are obviously useful in analyzing the impact on consumption resulting from changes in income and prices (should the latter be available), but income and price elasticities, in themselves, say little about the internal structure of consumption spending. How expenditures for housing, transportation, and personal care to pick three standard categories of consumption spending - are related to expenditures for food, for example, has never been a direct focus of empirical study. This book focuses on these relationships and provides insight into consumer behavior that complements and goes beyond that given by conventional price and income elasticities, making it of interest to students as well as economists in both government and academia concerned with consumer behavior.
The book looks at the development of policing in a town noted for its high levels of crime. Through a detailed study of policing and police work over the period c. 1840-1914 it shows how the turbulent community of the early Victorian years was turned into a policed society by the end of the century.
The subject of multivariable analysis is of interest to pure and applied mathematicians, physicists, electrical, mechanical and systems engineers, mathematical economists, biologists, and statisticians. This introductory text provides students and researchers in the above fields with various ways of handling some of the useful but difficult concepts encountered in dealing with the machinery of multivariable analysis and differential forms on manifolds. The approach here is to make such concepts as concrete as possible. Highlights and key features: * systematic exposition, supported by numerous examples and exercises from the computational to the theoretical * brief development of linear algebra in Rn * review of the elements of metric space theory * treatment of standard multivariable material: differentials as linear transformations, the inverse and implicit function theorems, Taylor's theorem, the change of variables for multiple integrals (the most complex proof in the book) * Lebesgue integration introduced in concrete way rather than via measure theory * latar chapters move beyond Rn to manifolds and analysis on manifolds, covering the wedge product, differential forms, and the generalized Stokes' theorem * bibliography and comprehensive index Core topics in multivariable analysis that are basic for senior undergraduates and graduate studies in differential geometry and for analysis in N dimensions and on manifolds are covered. Aside from mathematical maturity, prerequisites are a one-semester undergraduate course in advanced calculus or analysis, and linear algebra. Additionally, researchers working in the areas of dynamical systems, control theory and optimization, general relativity and electromagnetic phenomena may use the book as a self-study resource. |
