Since the turn of the millennium, European societies have been
shaken by the re-emergence of religion as a contested factor in
public life. Using approaches from sociology, media and religious
studies, David Herbert compares recent public controversies
involving or implicating religion in the UK (England and Northern
Ireland), the Netherlands and France. Has there been a return of
public religion? Is self-segregation the cause of community
tensions and what is the role of the media in shaping public
attitudes to religion? He argues that the declining importance of
religion for the majority of European, s compared with its ongoing
and adapting importance for some from minority and immigrant
populations, calls for careful policy responses. Religion can and
already has been exploited to produce social polarization,
especially in the presence of negative and stereotyped media
representations.
Observers and Macroeconomic Systems is concerned with the
computational aspects of using a control-theoretic approach to the
analysis of dynamic macroeconomic systems. The focus is on using a
separate model for the development of the control policies. In
particular, it uses the observer-based approach whereby the
separate model learns to behave in a similar manner to the economic
system through output-injections. The book shows how this approach
can be used to learn the forward-looking behaviour of economic
actors which is a distinguishing feature of dynamic macroeconomic
models. It also shows how it can be used in conjunction with
low-order models to undertake policy analysis with a large
practical econometric model. This overcomes some of the
computational problems arising from using just the large
econometric models to compute optimal policy trajectories. The work
also develops visual simulation software tools that can be used for
policy analysis with dynamic macroeconomic systems.
Methamphetamine, made easily in clandestine labs from
over-the-counter ingredients, can cause depression, rapid tooth
decay, psychosis, sensations of flesh crawling with bugs, paranoia,
skin lesions, and kidney damage. Still, use has spread nationwide.
In this work, two experts on methamphetamine addiction and recovery
explain why this drug has such a physical, psychological, and
social draw for addicts, despite all the damage it causes.
Vignettes from addicts take us inside the subculture of meth users.
Authors Taylor and Covey explain why this drug and its addiction is
different from other illicit drugs and why, therefore, the
treatment needs to be specifically tailored in order to be
effective.
Stephan Jenkins, singer for the band Third Eye Blind, says
methamphetamine makes you feel bright and shiny, but it also makes
you pathetically and relentlessly self-destructive, so much so that
you will do unconscionable things to feel bright and shiny again.
This drug, made easily in clandestine labs from over-the-counter
ingredients, can also cause depression, rapid tooth decay,
psychosis, sensations of flesh crawling with bugs, paranoia, skin
lesions, and kidney damage. Still, use has spread nationwide from
California to Maine, with known addictions now highest in the West,
Midwest, and South. Treatment admissions for methamphetamine
addictions have increased more than fivefold in the last decade,
with a federal report in 2006 showing 136,000 known cases. Meth is
particularly addictive to women because it causes rapid weight
loss. The results, as shown in recent cover stories in "Newsweek,
National Geographic," and "USA Today," are pain for far more than
the abuser. Meth addiction also ravages life for spouses, children,
and other family members, as well as communities.
In this work, two experts on methamphetamine addiction and
recovery explain why this drug has such a physical, psychological,
and social draw for addicts despite all the damage it causes.
Vignettes from addicts let us see inside the subculture of meth
users. Authors Taylor and Covey explain why this drug and its
addiction is different from other illicit drugs, and therefore why
the treatment needs to be specifically tailored in order to be
effective. This book, focused only on the addiction avenues and
paths to recovery, is a perfect companion to Covey's earlier book,
"The Metehamphetamine Crisis" (Praeger, 2006), which details the
emergence and history of this drug use in the United States, as
well as the social and community effects, and criminal justice
approaches, successes, and failures to date. This book at hand will
appeal to meth abusers, their families, and professionals trying to
aid recovery from this new scourge, including substance abuse
treatment providers, health professionals, psychologists, school
personnel, and criminal justice staff.
The study of media industries has become a thriving subfield of
media studies. It already comprises a diverse intellectual history,
a range of fascinating questions and topics, and many theoretical
and methodological frameworks. Media Industry Studies provides the
roadmap to this vibrant area of study. Blending a comprehensive
overview of foundational literature with an examination of the
varied scales and sites media industry studies have considered, the
book explores connections among research questions, topics, and
methodologies. It includes examples from many media industries -
film, television, journalism, music, games - and incorporates
emerging scholarship considering the industrial contexts of social
and internet-distributed media. Offering an account of the
intellectual traditions and approaches that have defined the
subfield to date, Media Industry Studies is an indispensable
resource for upper-level undergraduates, postgraduates, and
scholars.
The authors recount how the synthetic rubber industry was created
virtually overnight following the bombing of Pearl Harbor. They
examine early attempts to extend natural rubber reserves. The rest
of the story is that of the full scale effort by government,
industry, and academia to develop a viable alternative to natural
rubber within a short time and on an economically sound basis. The
authors also provide an account of what has happened to the
synthetic rubber industry between the end of the war and 1980,
identify some lessons that can be learned from the synthetic rubber
experience for government-industry programs, and draw parallels
between the rubber dependency of the 1940s and the energy
dependency of the 1980s.
Parenting any preschooler can be challenging, but when
hyperactivity and impulsivity are extreme, parenting requires
extraordinary effort and skill. Parents need tools for helping
their children behave in ways that are adaptive and socially
appropriate and that will prevent their children from developing
additional difficulties. Children who are hyperactive are at risk
for developing emotional or behavioral disorders, and research
suggests that helping parents to provide firm and consistent limits
in a nurturing environment can significantly reduce hyperactivity
and associated difficulties. Parenting Hyperactive Preschoolers
provides a 14-week parent training and emotion socialization
program that aims to help preschoolers who have symptoms of ADHD by
teaching parents new ways of interacting with their children. This
clinician's manual outlines each session and includes homework
forms and handouts for parents and children. The treatment includes
behavior management strategies that have been demonstrated to be
effective for children with behavior problems and tailors these
strategies to the specific needs of hyperactive preschoolers.
Because children with ADHD have substantial difficulties with
emotion regulation, this as an important component of the treatment
protocol. The program is designed to be conducted in a group
setting in 90 minute sessions, which also allows parents to receive
support and input from each other, but can be easily adapted to
sessions with individual parents.

David Herbert Donald's Lincoln is a stunningly original portrait of Lincoln's life and presidency. Donald brilliantly depicts Lincoln's gradual ascent from humble beginnings in rural Kentucky to the ever- expanding political circles in Illinois, and finally to the presidency of a country divided by civil war. Donald goes beyond biography, illuminating the gradual development of Lincoln's character, chronicling his tremendous capacity for evolution and growth, thus illustrating what made it possible for a man so inexperienced and so unprepared for the presidency to become a great moral leader. In the most troubled of times, here was a man who led the country out of slavery and preserved a shattered Union -- in short, one of the greatest presidents this country has ever seen.

Prominent among the stones of a fireplace in my country den, one
large rounded giant stands out. It was bourne by the glacial
streams from a more northern resting place and is marked by a
fossil of a mollusk that inhabited northern seas many million years
ago. Yet in spite of the eons of time that have passed it can be
compared with specimens of mollusks that live to-day. Down through
the countless centuries the living stream has carved its structural
habitations in much the same form. The science of Paleontology has
collected this history and has attempted a reconstruction of life
from its beginnings. The same principle here illustrated is true
for the thought-life of mankind. The forms in which it has been
preserved however are not so evident. The structuralizations are
not so definite. If they were, evolution would not have been
possible for the living stream of energy which is utilized by
mind-stuff cannot be confined if it would advance to more complex
integrations. Hence the products of mind in evolution are more
plastic-more subtle and more changing. They are to be found in the
myths and the folk-lore of ancient peoples, the poetry, dramatic
art, and the language of later races. From age to age however the
strivings continue the same. The living vessels must continue and
the products express the most fundamental strivings, in varying
though related forms.

This elegant and theoretically informed book, illustrated with
forty-five photographs, explores the cultural significance of six
exhibitions or new museum installations, all opening in Paris
between mid-1937 and early 1938: the commercially oriented world's
fair titled L'Exposition Internationale des Art et Techniques; the
historical Musee des Monuments Francais; the ethnographic Musee de
l'Homme; two massive art retrospectives, one sponsored by the state
of France and the other by the municipality of Paris; and
L'Exposition Internationale du Surrealisme.
James D. Herbert capitalizes on the proximity of these disparate
exhibits to show how they competed with and yet also complemented
one another in visually rendering the full scope of human
accomplishment through time and across the globe. In this task,
Herbert argues, they both succeeded and failed in interesting and
productive ways. He asserts that the exhibitions projected and, in
a sense, created (created precisely through the act of projection)
the real world that they ostensibly only represented.
In fact, Herbert argues, the exhibitions developed a particular
sense of French national identity -- one that, in managing to be at
the same moment both inwardly focused and beneficently expansive,
would present a vivid contrast to the growing German nationalism of
the Third Reich. His epilogue takes a final look at these issues
from the perspective of Jean Cocteau's 1950 film Orphee. A
ground-breaking work in cultural history, Paris 1937, with its
insightful examination of objects from a variety of fields, is a
pioneering text in the field of visual studies.
