The 2020 deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor rekindled decades old concerns about the legitimacy of policing. They ignited the international recognition that Black people are subjected to forms of police violence that exceed the boundaries of formal law and human decency. This book confirms that the Floyd and Taylor cases are not isolated incidents and provides suggestions toward prevention. The contributors to the book have served on both sides of the criminal legal system. They have been those who were tasked with enforcing the law and those who have been subject to law enforcement. Consequently, they are able to identify specific failures of a system that focuses on race, specifically Blackness, as a primary indicator of criminal propensity. Through these chapters, the authors suggest academically, morally and practically sound corrective measures for moving toward a goal of equal, rather than discriminatory and excessively harmful, treatment under the law. This book will be of interest to researchers and advanced students of Criminology, Race and Ethnic Studies, Politics, Human Rights, and Political Sociology. It was originally published as a special issue in the Journal of Ethnicity in Criminal Justice.

True Wildlife: Tom D. Jones True Wildlife
Tom D. Jones; Foreword by Steve McCurry
R1,147 Discovery Miles 11 470 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"Tom’s committed career has captured images that will serve as pieces of history for generations to come." – Steve McCurry Tom D. Jones is a wildlife photographer: he makes a point of never photographing animals in captivity and portrays them very closely. The results are almost human portraits of impressive animals such as elephants, rhinos, lions, etc. They also carry a clear message: let's take care of these often endangered species and the world they inhabit before it's too late. This is precisely what his friend and colleague Steve McCurry emphasises in the foreword to this great book.

A range of designs that are suitable for all sewing abilities. The essence of this book is to keep it simple, fun, and easy to stitch. With that in mind most of the designs are sewn using only whole cross stitch, and back stitch is kept to a minimum. The patterns vary in sizes. From small quick stitch designs for tags, pincushions, key fobs, and cards, to larger, more involved designs for notebook covers, pictures, fire screens, or table cloths. Many of the designs can easily be used in multiple ways. A single small design or band could be used to edge a place mat, table cloth, towel, or curtain tie back, or you could combine several designs together to make a sampler. A stunning collection of patterns for both new and experienced stitchers alike.

Cameron D. Jones, Jay T Harrison
R815 Discovery Miles 8 150 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

At the Heart of the Borderlands is the first book-length study of Africans and Afro-descendants in the frontiers of Spanish America. While people of African descent have formed part of most borderlands' histories, this study recognizes and explains their critical contribution to the formation of frontier spaces. Lack of imperial control coupled with Spain's desperation for settlers and soldiers in frontier areas facilitated the social mobility of Afro-descendants. This need allowed African descendants to become not just members of borderland societies but leaders of it as well. They were essential actors in helping to shape the limits of the Spanish empire. Africans and Afro-descendants built, opposed, and shaped Spanish hegemony in the borderlands, taking on roles that would have been impossible or difficult in colonial centers due to the socio-racial hierarchy of imperial policies and practices.

Downsizing the Federal Government - Management of Public Sector Workforce Reductions (Hardcover): Vernon D Jones Downsizing the Federal Government - Management of Public Sector Workforce Reductions (Hardcover)
Vernon D Jones
R5,350 Discovery Miles 53 500 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The main focus of downsizing has shifted from the private to the public sector. The cutbacks began in the Department of Defense. Now the goal is a federal civilian workforce reduction of 12 percent by the year 2000.

This pioneering study looks at the management of workforce reductions in the public sector both in theory and in practice. Three case studies -- of the Defense Logistics Agency, the Bureau of Reclamation, and the Food and Drug Administration -- illustrate the organizational, managerial, and human dimensions of attempting to improve performance with reduced resources. The author draws on extensive interviews with senior executives and middle managers in the three agencies; at the General Accounting Office, the Office of Personnel Management, and the National Performance Review; the Senior Executives Association and the Federal Managers Association; and scholars and researchers.

In a larger sense, this work pushes the boundaries of knowledge concerning organizational change and makes a significant contribution to organization theory. It offers important new insights not only for public sector managers but for organization theorists and management specialists whose work on downsizing has been presumed but not shown to be applicable to the public sector.

Women Who Opt Out - The Debate over Working Mothers and Work-Family Balance (Paperback, New): Bernie D. Jones Women Who Opt Out - The Debate over Working Mothers and Work-Family Balance (Paperback, New)
Bernie D. Jones
R714 Discovery Miles 7 140 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In a much-publicized and much-maligned 2003 New York Times article, "The Opt-Out Revolution," the journalist Lisa Belkin made the controversial argument that highly educated women who enter the workplace tend to leave upon marrying and having children. Women Who Opt Out is a collection of original essays by the leading scholars in the field of work and family research, which takes a multi-disciplinary approach in questioning the basic thesis of "the opt-out revolution." The contributors illustrate that the desire to balance both work and family demands continues to be a point of unresolved concern for families and employers alike and women's equity within the workforce still falls behind. Ultimately, they persuasively make the case that most women who leave the workplace are being pushed out by a work environment that is hostile to women, hostile to children, and hostile to the demands of family caregiving, and that small changes in outdated workplace policies regarding scheduling, flexibility, telecommuting and mandatory overtime can lead to important benefits for workers and employers alike. Contributors: Kerstin Aumann, Jamie Dolkas, Ellen Galinsky, Lisa Ackerly Hernandez, Susan J. Lambert, Joya Misra, Maureen Perry-Jenkins, Peggie R. Smith, Pamela Stone, and Joan C. Williams. This book provides an expansive view of celebrity's intimate dimensions. The essays assembled here explore the lives of a wide range of figures: actors and actresses, but also politicians, churchmen, authors and rogues; some who courted celebrity openly and others who seemed to achieve it almost inadvertently. At a time when the topic of celebrity's origins is attracting unprecedented scholarly attention, this collection is an important, pioneering resource.

Adele D. Jones, Ena Trotman Jemmott, Hazel Da Breo, Priya Maharaj
R1,586 Discovery Miles 15 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Presenting real-life case studies of child sexual abuse in the Caribbean as a basis for discussing interventions and models of practice that are relevant for a wide range of cultural and social settings, this multi-disciplinary text will be of interest to scholars, professionals and practitioners alike. Contributors to this volume demonstrate how sexual abuse is never just a problem of the individual: structures of inequality and the intersection of the factors they give rise to help to explain why some children are more at risk of abuse than others. Furthermore, the sub-systems in which lives are lived can compound risk and vulnerability or alternatively, can be sources of support and change. This book draws on these ideas to discuss practice across a range of service users: children, adolescent girls, teenage mothers, children with learning disabilities, fathers, mothers, women who abuse, juvenile sex offenders and children in residential care. p>

Climate can be defined as an ensemble of many weather phenomena. Clima tologists often use the mean (conventionally the monthly and annual mean) of weather-related parameters to describe climate. The mean value, however, is not all the climate. Climatic changes might occur if certain aspects of the distribution of extreme values change, while the mean does not. Katz and Brown (1992), for example, show from a theoretical viewpoint that in a changing climate, extreme values are determined more by changes in variability than changes in the mean. Possible changes in extreme event frequency receive considerable attention along with the global warming, because extremes directly impact human society and the economy. For most societally sensitive extremes and related changes in their vari ability, an analysis based on daily data becomes necessary. This paper considers two aspects (relative and absolute values) of extreme temperatures on a daily basis. We do not consider spells of extreme days, periods which will likely have greater socio-economic and health impacts (Kalkstein et al., 1996; Wagner, 1999), than individual extreme days.
