Dancing in Chains - The Youth of William Dean Howells (Hardcover, New): Rodney D. Olsen Dancing in Chains - The Youth of William Dean Howells (Hardcover, New)
Rodney D. Olsen
R3,195 Discovery Miles 31 950 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

""Dancing in Chains" is far more than a sensitive biography (though it is surely that); it is also a model of psychologically informed social and cultural history. Olsen recognizes that psychic conflicts often play themselves out on a higher plane, that psychic and intellectual history are intertwined. He presents a wonderful nuanced picture of Howells."
--Jackson Lears, Rutgers University

In this insightful study of the childhood and youth of William Dean Howells, "Dancing in Chains" demonstrates how the turbulent social and cultural changes of the early nineteenth century shaped the young Howells's emotional and intellectual life. His early diaries, letters, poetry, fiction, and newspaper columns are used to illustrate Olsen's argument, which also in turn throws light on the dominant tensions in antebellum America.

Accepting the emergent middle-class ethos of civilized morality, with its new conceptions of child rearing and gender spheres, Howells's parents urged him to achieve self-control and individual success while also teaching him to seek the good of others rather than his own glory. For Howells the conflicts coalesced at the time of his leaving home, an increasing common rite of passage for antebellum youth. Trying to affirm his sense of literary vocation, he tested his aspirations against the family's Swedenborgian religious convictions and the antislavery commitments of his village while experimenting with competing literary ideologies in the process of meeting the demands of the new mass reading audience. For Howells the resulting tensions eased toward the end of his youth but reappeared in his more mature works of fiction and social criticism in later years.

Portraying the ordeal of coming of age during a momentous period of American history, "Dancing in Chains" is a fascinating study with a broad appeal to general readers as well as scholars.

Seeking Justice - Access to Remedy for Corporate Human Rights Abuse (Hardcover): Tricia D Olsen Seeking Justice - Access to Remedy for Corporate Human Rights Abuse (Hardcover)
Tricia D Olsen
R2,519 Discovery Miles 25 190 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Seeking Justice: Access to Remedy for Corporate Human Rights Abuse explores victims' varying experiences in seeking remedy mechanisms for corporate human rights abuse. It puts forward a novel theory about the possibility of productive contestation and explores governance outcomes for victims of corporate human rights abuse across Latin America. This foundation informs three pathways that victims can use to press for their rights: working within the institutional environment, capitalizing on corporate characteristics, and elevating voices. Seeking Justice challenges the common assumptions in the governance gap literature and argues, instead, that greater democratic practices can emerge from productive contestation. This book brings to bear tough questions about the trade-offs associated with economic growth and conflicting values around human dignity-questions that are very salient today, as citizens around the globe contemplate the type of democratic and economic systems that might better prepare us for tomorrow.

Liberate Hawai'i! (Paperback): Jon D. Olsen Liberate Hawai'i! (Paperback)

"If the government of Hawaii had not been illegally overthrown by the U.S. Marines through a classic act of Manifest Destiny and American-style gunboat diplomacy, Hawaii would still be an independent sovereign nation today. Notwithstanding a series of clever illegal moves by the U.S. government, Hawaii cannot be considered a legally bona fide state of the United States. . . . In 1959 the U.S. falsely informed the U.N. that Hawaii had become the 50th state of the United States after an illegal plebiscite. . . . Jon Olsen . . .convincingly points out that the fraudulent claim of Hawaiian statehood is immoral, illegal, and unconstitutional." -The late Thomas H. Naylor, Professor Emeritus of Economics, Duke University "Jon Olsen is a warrior of truth, proclaiming a vision of Hawaiian sovereignty. He is not alone. The Hawaiian Resistance that began sweeping across the islands forty years ago has become a storm of new consciousness. Where will it blow? Olsen charts that storm's history and possibilities. For readers whose eyes can see a radically free Hawaii, here it is." -Jim Douglass, author of JFK and The Unspeakable ." . .you are an incredibly gifted writer and inquiring spirit. Congratulations on such a difficult achievement The research is impressive and your writing cohesive and erudite without being pompous." -Belva Ann Prycel accomplished artist and author of memoirs Passage, Times and Tides, and Water Tales

There is a secret society with an insatiable desire to take full control of the human population of earth, The Nafarions. Their plans have been thwarted time and time again by an opposing power, The Traveler's Club. Also a secret society, the Traveler's Club works to spread influence for the good and prosperity of all humans. Both of these societies are closed families, though not of human origin. They do appear as humans though... but what are they really? They are aliens of purpose, secretly living among us. Their existence has been kept intact through the ages by specialized reincarnation. But the Nafarions have now developed a way to interrupt this reincarnation process. They have already succeeded in capturing two key Traveler's Club leaders with the intention of taking control of them. If they succeed, it's only a matter of time before the Traveler's Club will be decimated by selective execution, leaving the Nafarions free to have their way with the human population of Earth.

Life literally stinks for Sam, herding goats on the lonely edges of the kingdom of Valdmark. How he got banished out here is a complete mystery to him, and his uncle Nob isn't about to give him any answers. Sam feels like the proverbial mushroom: kept totally in the dark and fed copious amounts of manure . . . That is, until the night that a marauding, glow-in-the-dark troll roars out of the icy mountains and tries to rip Sam apart. Suddenly, Sam goes from being a shunned nobody to being the most wanted person in the kingdom, fighting to keep one step ahead of the elves and soldiers who are relentlessly hunting him down. But it's the trolls who worry him the most: if those foul creatures manage to sink their claws into him, then the entire kingdom will be overrun . . . Aided by an ill-tempered elve and a man who claims to be Sam's long-lost grandfather, Sam has just days to riddle out the secrets of his mysterious past in order to prevent a ruthless war between trolls, elves and men. It seems that destiny has been calling Sam, but only if he can stay alive long enough to figure out just exactly what that destiny is. Trolls is the opening slavo of The Midgard Chronicles, an epic Northern trilogy based on the same myths and sagas that inspired J.R.R. Tolkien, with lots of humorous and horrific weirdness constantly erupting into the lives of its fifteen-year-old hero and his friends.

The Black Hole of High Conflict - Your Child-Safe Guide for Navigating High Conflict Divorce and Custody Issues (Paperback):... The Black Hole of High Conflict - Your Child-Safe Guide for Navigating High Conflict Divorce and Custody Issues (Paperback)
Brook D Olsen
R430 Discovery Miles 4 300 Out of stock

"As went the marriage so goes the divorce" and "Stay away from the flypaper " These were the most important words spoken to me when I was going through my own high conflict divorce some 13 years ago. My therapist's advice changed the way I thought about nearly everything that happened from that point forward and, most importantly, how I reacted to events during the 2-1/2 year divorce process. If you have been caught up in the long and painful path of a high conflict divorce you will probably agree with these statements. If you are just beginning the divorce process, please take time to reflect on these statements. I believe they will save you great pain and help you find your way through this most treacherous time. If you are reading this material you are likely someone who is looking (or knows someone who is looking) for answers regarding the cycle and traits of a high conflict divorce. In the pages to come I will give you a perspective that you may not hear from the established minds in the worlds of family law or mental health. My goal is to offer you a highly effective process to navigate through high conflict divorce, and get you to think outside of the traditional "box." I have developed leading-edge strategies that have been enormously successful in helping clients and students through the maze of high conflict divorce. Most Family Court professionals believe that all parents have to find a way to co-parent and generate orders that reflect this, even in the face of clear evidence that in high conflict situations, co-parenting only makes the problem worse. These beliefs about co-parenting are based on the normal behavior of the vast majority of separated parents (around 70%). Parents in the remaining high conflict group (around 30%) are not capable of co-parenting in the traditional sense. Familiarizing yourself with the traits and behaviors of high conflict personalities is probably the single most important undertaking necessary to changing the way YOU think, react and behave when it comes to dealing with the other parent. It isn't advanced psychology to state that most all of our worldviews and behaviors are a product of our history. Examining the history of your relationship, as well as any childhood issues experienced by you or the other parent, will help you not only understand better the other parent's point of view, but will give you a good predictor of the behavior to come. This book will change how you think and what you believe regarding the family court system, and free you from the recurring nightmare of being entangled in a fight that makes no sense. It is not intended to be digested in one sitting. Exercises are included at the end of each chapter and will require extra time and effort. If you choose to use them, they will enhance your understanding and effectiveness of the material presented. These are contemplative exercises of the material presented in each chapter.

Karen Olsen's What Brain Research Can Teach About Cutting School Budgets is a practical guide for school leaders who are charged with the painstaking task of making budget cuts-a task typically driven by emotion, tradition, and the power of social leaders, followed by disagreements and dissatisfaction. This book offers an alternative-a way to use brain research to create powerful but politically neutral decision-making criteria. The author offers clear action items, brain research summaries, and checklists to guide leaders through the budget cutting process, and to ensure that they reinvest money into the key programmes that will truly impact student achievement.

Kovalik's pioneering Highly Effective Teaching (HET) model has continually evolved for more than 30 years.' -Robert Sylwester, Emeritus Professor of Education University of Oregon 'This is a book to savor. The content is a woven tapestry: many colorful threads elucidate ideas based in sound research. Marvel at how the authors weave the threads to provide a cohesive, understandable, beautiful educational perspective.' - Lawrence Lowery, Professor Graduate School of Education, University of California, Berkeley A step-by-step approach to taking giant leaps in science learning Kid's Eye View of Science examines learning science from multiple perspectives-especially a child's. The whimsical character of Mary Froggins guides readers through the steps of igniting students' natural sense of wonder, incorporating brain research, integrating science concepts with other subjects, and applying science to daily life. The authors demonstrate how to teach science conceptually through the lens of "big ideas" such as change, interdependence, and adaptation. Rich with instructional strategies for exploring inquiry-based science, this valuable resource's highlights include: Charts, graphics, forms, and summaries that help teachers translate abstract concepts into concrete lessons A comprehensive discussion of brain research, including helpful tips to assimilate 10 bodybrain-compatible elements into the classroom Practical hands-on guidance for enriching science programs and improving student outcomes Field-tested and applicable to multiple intelligences, the book also provides a comprehensive vision for curriculum development with an eye toward preparing students to use their knowledge to shape the future.
