Handbook of Public Sector Economics (Hardcover): Donijo Robbins Handbook of Public Sector Economics (Hardcover)
Donijo Robbins; Series edited by Jack Rabin; Contributions by Carol Ebdon, Suzanne Leland, Shama Gamkhar, …
R3,825 Discovery Miles 38 250 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Handbook of Public Sector Economics builds an understanding of the role of public economics in public administration, public policy, and decision making. The handbook introduces a wide variety of current issues related to the public provision and production of goods and services.
The volume documents the history of economics and fiscal doctrine, explores the theory of public goods and the structures from which resources are collected and expanded, and analyzes heavily debated issues of economics that are important to current and future practitioners of public policy and administration. It focuses on the effects of fiscal policy on savings and investment, consumer behavior, labor supply, wealth, property, and trade. Written in a simple and straightforward style, the initial chapters establish the foundation of public economics, with the subsequent chapters addressing the collection and distribution of government resources and market reactions to fiscal policies.

Hong Kong Takes Flight - Commercial Aviation and the Making of a Global Hub, 1930s-1998 (Hardcover): John D. Wong Hong Kong Takes Flight - Commercial Aviation and the Making of a Global Hub, 1930s-1998 (Hardcover)
John D. Wong
R1,209 Discovery Miles 12 090 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Commercial aviation took shape in Hong Kong as the city developed into a powerful economy. Rather than accepting air travel as an inevitability in the era of global mobility, John Wong argues that Hong Kong's development into a regional and global airline hub was not preordained. By underscoring the shifting process through which this hub emerged, Hong Kong Takes Flight aims to describe globalization and global networks in the making. Viewing the globalization of the city through the prism of its airline industry, Wong examines how policymakers and businesses asserted themselves against international partners and competitors in a bid to accrue socioeconomic benefits, negotiated their interests in Hong Kong's economic success, and articulated their expressions of modernity.

Global Trade in the Nineteenth Century - The House of Houqua and the Canton System (Paperback): John D. Wong Global Trade in the Nineteenth Century - The House of Houqua and the Canton System (Paperback)
John D. Wong
R920 Discovery Miles 9 200 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this engaging new study, John D. Wong examines the Canton trade networks that helped to shape the modern world through the lens of the prominent Chinese merchant Houqua, whose trading network and financial connections stretched from China to India, America and Britain. In contrast to interpretations that see Chinese merchants in this era as victims of rising Western mercantilism and oppressive Chinese traditions, Houqua maintained a complex balance between his commercial interests and those of his Western counterparts, all in an era of transnationalism before the imposition of the Western world order. The success of Houqua and Co. in configuring its networks in the fluid context of the early nineteenth century remains instructive today, as the contemporary balance of political power renders the imposition of a West-centric world system increasingly problematic, and requires international traders to adapt to a new world order in which China, once again, occupies center stage.

Reckonings - Contemporary Short Fiction by Native American Women (Paperback): Hertha D. Wong, Lauren Stuart Muller, Jana... Reckonings - Contemporary Short Fiction by Native American Women (Paperback)
Hertha D. Wong, Lauren Stuart Muller, Jana Sequoya Magdaleno
R1,057 Discovery Miles 10 570 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Unlike most anthologies that present a single story from many writers, this volume offers an in-depth sampling of two or three stories by a select number of both famous and emergent Native women writers. Here you will find much-loved stories (many made easily accessible for the first time) and vibrant new stories by such well-known contemporary Native American writers as Paula Gunn Allen, Louise Erdrich, Joy Harjo, Linda Hogan, and Leslie Marmon Silko as well as the fresh voices of emergent writers such as Reid Gomez and Beth Piatote. Although diverse in style, language, and tone, all of these stories are reckonings with the brutal history of colonization and its ongoing consequences: they reveal Native epistemologies; testify to historic wrongs; and insist upon an accounting. A reckoning requires diving inward and resurfacing with new insights. These stories share an understanding of Native women's lives in their various modes of loss and struggle, resistance and acceptance, and rage and compassion, ultimately highlighting the individual and collective will to endure. These contemporary stories reflect cycles-mythic cycles, life cycles, cycles of resistance, and healing cycles-that insure Native survival. These are the stories told and retold by Native women who refuse to be silenced. Their collection celebrates survival and provides readers with an essential new resource.

Christian Extremism as a Domestic Terror Threat (Paperback): Frank D Wong Christian Extremism as a Domestic Terror Threat (Paperback)
Frank D Wong
R385 Discovery Miles 3 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Americans readily identify Muslim extremism as a viable threat to America. However, they ignore or remain unaware of Christian extremism in the same context, despite the similarities in ideology that advocate violence against Americans. For example, the motivation behind Eric Rudolph's bombing of the Olympics in Atlanta in 1996 was to "embarrass and punish the U.S. government" for its pro-abortion stance. This monograph explores what, if any, domestic terror threat Christian extremism poses and follows the Constructivist approach: how ideas define structure, how this structure defines interests, and how actors take action as a result. Initially focusing on the history and core beliefs of the Christian Identity movement and radical fringes of Dominion and Reconstruction theology, this monograph identifies two major underlying themes in Christian extremism. The first is racism through the use of religion as an accelerant to promote violence. The second is religiously motivated terrorism to support what is perceived as God's will and law. In addition, this monograph analyzes federal law enforcement action against Christian extremism through a series of case studies that took place in Mountainhome, Arkansas, Ruby Ridge, Idaho, and Waco, Texas. The analysis of the catastrophic consequences from Ruby Ridge and Waco with the Oklahoma City bombing follows. Concluding this monograph are the lessons learned, comparison of federal law enforcement's action in each case study, and analyzing the tactics and leadership involved. Whereas the FBI's tactics and leadership exercised proved highly successful in Arkansas, they were disastrous in Idaho and Texas. Finally, this monograph provides a domestic terror threat assessment with recommended actions in what is not only a law enforcement issue, but a war of ideology between tolerance and understanding versus hate and bigotry. While difficult to implement, the recommended actions contribute to the understanding of Christian extremism and potential threats stemming from it.
