Nach seinem Studium und in Vorbereitung seiner Tatigkeit als Bergassessor erhielt Humboldt den Auftrag, die Steingutfertigung in der Manufaktur Rheinsberg zu inspizieren und daruber Bericht zu erstatten. Lange Jahre wusste man aus Briefen, dass Humboldt am 5. Juni 1792 zu seiner Inspektionsreise aufbrach und das Gutachten am 17. Juni 1792 vorlegte. Das Gutachten selbst galt als verschollen. Es wurde in den 1970er Jahren von Horst Mauter im Markischen Museum in Berlin wieder aufgefunden und wird nun vollstandig als Faksimile, neu transkribiert und zum ersten Mal ausfuhrlich fachlich kommentiert veroffentlicht. Aus heutiger Sicht ist es interessant, dem damaligen Stand des Verstandnisses fur chemische Vorgange und daraus resultierenden Fehleinschatzungen nachzuspuren. Dies alles macht das Gutachten nicht nur fur die Verehrer Alexander von Humboldts, sondern auch fur Naturwissenschafts- und Technikhistoriker besonders interessant."
