Grand Strategy and the Presidency - Foreign Policy, War and the American Role in the World (Hardcover): C. Dale Walton Grand Strategy and the Presidency - Foreign Policy, War and the American Role in the World (Hardcover)
C. Dale Walton
R4,306 Discovery Miles 43 060 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book examines the role of the Presidency in the formulation and conduct of US grand strategy and why this is important. It argues that, while the United States periodically has enjoyed exceptional presidential leadership in the past, few future presidents will meet high standards of leadership in foreign affairs. In turn, this will undermine the ability of the United States to construct and maintain a coherent grand strategy appropriate to the multipolar world of the twenty-first century. This is because there is little incentive, and often minimal opportunity, for prospective presidential candidates to cultivate the knowledge and skills that can translate into exceptional performance in the conduct of foreign policy and war. The US political system is "weighted" so as to favor candidates with particular characteristics -- such as personal magnetism and the ability to speak fluidly -- and voters generally use debates, press conferences, and other media-driven events to judge the strategic acumen of candidates. The book discusses US strategic history, with particular emphasis on the period from the end of the Cold War to the present, and diagnoses the weaknesses present in US strategic decision making and the challenges that Washington soon will face as great powers such as China grow more capable of influencing the international security environment and threatening US interests. It also explains, first, why exceptional presidential guidance is important to US strategic success in this century, and then establishes why such leadership is unlikely to be forthcoming. The book's final chapter discusses the probable effects of dubious presidential leadership, exploring why it is likely that the United States can be expected often to expend its strength on conflicts that do not advance its national interests, but may fail to intervene effectively in some of the international controversies most vital to its national interests. The Myth of Inevitable US Defeat in Vietnam (Paperback): Dale Walton The Myth of Inevitable US Defeat in Vietnam (Paperback)
Dale Walton
R1,601 Discovery Miles 16 010 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Geopolitics and the Great Powers in the 21st Century - Multipolarity and the Revolution in Strategic Perspective (Paperback):... Geopolitics and the Great Powers in the 21st Century - Multipolarity and the Revolution in Strategic Perspective (Paperback)
C. Dale Walton
R1,595 Discovery Miles 15 950 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book argues that in the twenty-first century Eastern Eurasia will replace Europe as the theatre of decision in international affairs, and that this new geographic and cultural context will have a strong influence on the future of world affairs.
For half a millennium, the great powers have practised what might be called 'world politics', yet during that time Europe, and small portions of the Near East and North Africa strategically vital to Europe, were the 'centres of gravity' in international politics. This book argues that the 'unipolar moment' of the post-Cold War era will not be replaced by a US-China 'Cold War', but rather by a long period of multipolarity in the twenty-first century. Examining the policy goals and possible military-political strategies of several powers, this study explains how Washington may play a key role in eastern Eurasian affairs if it can learn to operate in a very different political context. Dale Walton also considers the rapid pace of technological change and how it will impact on great power politics. Considering India, China, the US, Russia, Japan, and other countries as part of a multipolar system, he addresses the central questions that will drive US policy in the coming decades.
Geopolitics and the Great Powers in the 21st Century will be of interest to students of international security, military history, geopolitics, and international relations.

The Myth of Inevitable US Defeat in Vietnam (Hardcover, annotated edition): Dale Walton The Myth of Inevitable US Defeat in Vietnam (Hardcover, annotated edition)
Dale Walton
R4,302 Discovery Miles 43 020 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume offers a dispassionate strategic examination of the Vietnam conflict that challenges the conventional wisdom that South Vietnam could not survive as an independent non-communist entity over the long term regardless of how the United States conducted its military-political effort in Indochina. In reality, the Vietnam War was far from an "unwinnable" war for the United States: the latter possessed enormous military, financial, and other advantages over its foes. However, US officials made a multitude of predictable, avoidable strategic mistakes over a long period of time and certain key figures displayed an inability even to understand the significance of their errors and learn from them. The book considers US strategic decision-making at a number of levels and shows how American errors created the military and political conditions that made North Vietnamese victory possible. If the United States had conducted its political-military effort in a fashion that did not negate its advantages - indeed, ifit had avoided only a small number of many strategic errors - the outcome of the Indochina conflict would likely have been very different.

This book examines the role and importance of the Presidency in the formulation and conduct of US grand strategy. The text discusses US strategic history, with particular emphasis on the period from the end of the Cold War to the present day. In turn, this will undermine the ability of the United States to construct and maintain a coherent grand strategy appropriate to the multipolar world of the twenty-first century. Grand Strategy and the Presidency explores the role that the holders of the presidential office have played in the past development of the United States as a great power. Drawing upon examples from history, the textual analysis is shaped around the description of the long-term strategic development of the United States. The author then considers what the events of recent decades portend for the future of US strategy and foreign policy. This book will be of interest to students of Presidential Studies, US foreign policy, Strategic Studies, and IR/Security Studies in general.
