Labor Revitalization - Global Perspectives and New Initiatives (Hardcover, New): Daniel B. Cornfield, Holly J. McCammon Labor Revitalization - Global Perspectives and New Initiatives (Hardcover, New)
Daniel B. Cornfield, Holly J. McCammon
R3,812 Discovery Miles 38 120 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This work examines variations among nations in the wide array of initiatives labour unions and labour movements are taking to strengthen themselves and recruit new members. Moving beyond previous research on the factors leading to union decline, the international group of scholars who have contributed to this volume present a research agenda on the many initiatives unions are taking - and the different social, economic, and political challenges they face in several world regions, as labour movements endeavor to revitalize themselves. These revitalizing initiatives include changing labor leadership and membership organizing strategies; "social movement unionism"; broadening the range of services provided to union members; and pursuing political and legal reform that achieves freedom of association. The contemporary cases of labour revitalization in this volume have occurred in Australia, Brazil, Germany, Korea, Mexico, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Venezuela. The research agenda presented here rests on the conceptualization of labour revitalization as "socially embedded action," or strategic action taken by labor unions to strengthen themselves by redefining their relationships with workers, employers and states. Each of the three parts of "Labor Revitalization" addresses labour's changing relationships with workers, employers, and states, respectively.

Workers, Managers, and Technological Change - Emerging Patterns of Labor Relations (Paperback, 1987 ed.): Daniel B. Cornfield Workers, Managers, and Technological Change - Emerging Patterns of Labor Relations (Paperback, 1987 ed.)
Daniel B. Cornfield
R1,617 Discovery Miles 16 170 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Workers, Managers, and Technological Change: Emerging Patterns of Labor Relations contributes significantly to an important subject. Technological change is one of the most powerful forces transforming the American industrial relations In fact, the synergistic relationships between technology and indus system. trial relations are so complex that they are not well or completely understood. We know that the impact of technology, while not independent of social forces, already has been profound: it has transformed occupations, creating new skills and destroying others; altered the power relationships between workers and managers; and changed the way workers learn and work. Tech nology also has made it possible to decentralize some economic activities out of large metropolitan areas and into small towns, rural areas, and other coun tries. Most important, information technology makes it possible for interna tional corporations to operate on a global basis. Indeed, some international corporations, especially those based in the United States, are losing their national identities, detaching the welfare of corporations from that of particu lar workers and communities. Internationalization, facilitated by information technology, has trans formed industrial relations systems. A major objective of the traditional American industrial relations system was to take labor out of competition."

Labor in the New Urban Battlegrounds - Local Solidarity in a Global Economy (Hardcover, New): Lowell Turner, Daniel B. Cornfield Labor in the New Urban Battlegrounds - Local Solidarity in a Global Economy (Hardcover, New)
Lowell Turner, Daniel B. Cornfield; Foreword by Peter Evans
R3,864 Discovery Miles 38 640 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Labor in the New Urban Battlegrounds examines a diverse array of innovative strategies for revitalizing the labor movement by forming alliances outside the workplace with a variety of community groups, social movements, and faith-based organizations, particularly those that address civil rights, immigrant rights, and consumer concerns. This book presents case studies of issues such as living wages, community development corporations, and local politics around which urban coalitions are built in "union towns" (New York City, Boston, Buffalo, and Seattle), "frontier cities" (Los Angeles, Miami, San Jose, and Nashville), and European cities (London, Frankfurt, and Hamburg).

Introducing the role of urban social context in the field of labor revitalization, the editors have chosen cases with different outcomes cities in which strong coalitions have enabled new union influence are contrasted with those in which such coalition building has been thwarted. As they survey the successes and failures of the new urban labor movement, the editors and contributors conclude that actor choice, strategic innovation, coalition building, and the urban context of labor organizing are key elements in the revitalization of the labor movement and the renewal of democracy. This book will allow the labor leaders of the future to learn from the recent experiences of their peers throughout the United States and Europe."

Beyond the Beat - Musicians Building Community in Nashville (Paperback): Daniel B. Cornfield Beyond the Beat - Musicians Building Community in Nashville (Paperback)
Daniel B. Cornfield
R676 R582 Discovery Miles 5 820 Save R94 (14%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

At a time when the bulwarks of the music industry are collapsing, what does it mean to be a successful musician and artist? How might contemporary musicians sustain their artistic communities? Based on interviews with over seventy-five popular-music professionals in Nashville, Beyond the Beat looks at artist activists-those visionaries who create inclusive artist communities in today's individualistic and entrepreneurial art world. Using Nashville as a model, Daniel Cornfield develops a theory of artist activism-the ways that artist peers strengthen and build diverse artist communities. Cornfield discusses how genre-diversifying artist activists have arisen throughout the late twentieth-century musician migration to Nashville, a city that boasts the highest concentration of music jobs in the United States. Music City is now home to diverse recording artists-including Jack White, El Movimiento, the Black Keys, and Paramore. Cornfield identifies three types of artist activists: the artist-producer who produces and distributes his or her own and others' work while mentoring early-career artists, the social entrepreneur who maintains social spaces for artist networking, and arts trade union reformers who are revamping collective bargaining and union functions. Throughout, Cornfield examines enterprising musicians both known and less recognized. He links individual and collective actions taken by artist activists to their orientations toward success, audience, and risk and to their original inspirations for embarking on music careers. Beyond the Beat offers a new model of artistic success based on innovating creative institutions to benefit the society at large.

Work and Family - Research Informing Policy (Hardcover): Toby L. Parcel, Daniel B. Cornfield Work and Family - Research Informing Policy (Hardcover)
Toby L. Parcel, Daniel B. Cornfield
R3,198 Discovery Miles 31 980 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The ?juggling act? of work and family that has characterized life in the past couple of decades has become a significant focus of those interested in the social condition. Editors Toby L. Parcel and Daniel Cornfield draw on two major themes for this volume: First, that crucial to an understanding of the interplay between work and family is an acknowledgment of the varied ways time influences work and family processes?and outcomes. This book looks at time in both the macro historical sense as well as through examination of the more quotidian choices involved in balancing work and family. Second, Parcel and Cornfield consider the social policy implications that inhere in these essays. Contributors to Work and Family have been in every case encouraged to think explicitly about how governmental policies, as well as those of individual firms, can be derived from their research. This provocative collection is ideally suited to courses on work and occupations, family studies, organizations, and gender roles, taught in a number of disciplines, and will be of interest to scholars in these areas.

R2,702 Discovery Miles 27 020 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

What are the contemporary trends in workplace restructuring and the sociological impact on workers? lives? Around what concepts will work be organized and groups and individuals motivated in their work into the new century?

To give you definition and answers to these contemporary questions, the editors of the sociological quarterly, Work and Occupations, assembled Working in Restructured Workplaces. It addresses contradictory influences in contemporary workplace restructuring, its impact on workers? lives, and the direction and nature of future changes in the workplace. This authentic collection of sociological thought and research consists of previous works in Work and Occupations and some commissioned specifically for this book to focus on the nature, causes, and consequences of workplace restructuring.

The editors introduce a new concept of "workplace restructuring" to broaden your perspective and then assess implications for workers and their lives. The chapters address four major themes:

  • Reconfiguring workplace status hierarchies
  • Casualization of employment relationships
  • Restructuring and worker marginalization
  • Comparative labor responses to global restructuring

The last two chapters chart new research agendas on the boundaries and durability of workplace restructuring.
