Genes, Cognition and Neuropsychiatry - A Special Issue of Cognitive Neuropsychiatry (Hardcover, New): Brita Elvevag, Daniel... Genes, Cognition and Neuropsychiatry - A Special Issue of Cognitive Neuropsychiatry (Hardcover, New)
Brita Elvevag, Daniel Weinberger

Neuropsychiatry stands to benefit enormously from the new research framework afforded by the sequencing of the human genome and from examining the role of molecular genetics on the clinical presentation of psychiatric patients. A solid foundation is essential if novel genetic breakthroughs are to be translated to successful clinical agents. However, this new research program is magnitudes more complex than any enterprise embarked on hitherto and requires the development, validation and deployment of novel behavioural and neurophysiological phenotypes in order to unravel the pathologies within neural functional systems. This Special Issue provides an introduction to some important findings and implications for neuropsychiatry. The role of specific functional polymorphisms - including genomic mutations - as well as generalist genes are explored in childhood, adolescence and adulthood in terms of their modulatory roles on variables present at the level of clinical diagnosis as well as those evident at the level of intermediate neurocognitive and neurophysiological phenotypes, such as emotional reactivity, working memory, executive function, episodic memory and general intelligence. Methodological considerations of this research enterprise are discussed, such as genome wide association studies, the role of cognitive ontologies for neuropsychiatric phenomics as well as possible novel cognitive endophenotypes.

Schizophrenia - From neuroimaging to neuroscience (Hardcover): Stephen Lawrie, Eve Johnstone, Daniel Weinberger Schizophrenia - From neuroimaging to neuroscience (Hardcover)
Stephen Lawrie, Eve Johnstone, Daniel Weinberger
R6,694 Discovery Miles 66 940 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Neuroimaging techniques have made a huge contribution to our understanding of schizophrenia and other neuropsychiatric disorders. Until now however, texts on both schizophrenia and neuroimaging have paid little attention to the overlap between these areas. This new volume is the first dedicated to unraveling how these techniques can help us better understand this complex disorder. Each chapter focuses on a particular research method, describing the nature of the findings, the main technological problems, and future possibilities. Though including sufficient methodological detail to be of value to imaging researchers, the emphasis throughout is on providing information of value to clinicians. Written and edited by leaders in schizophrenia research, this book details what structural and functional brain imaging studies have already established about schizophrenia and what developments are likely in the foreseeable future. It will be of great value to psychiatrists, neuropsychiatrists, and cognitive neuroscientists.

The Unofficial Guide to Radiology: 100 Practice Abdominal X Rays is a companion to The Unofficial Guide to Radiology, which has been recommended by the Royal College of Radiologists, and won awards from the British Institute of Radiology and the British Medical Association. This book teaches systematic analysis of Abdominal X Rays. The layout is designed to make the book as relevant to clinical practice as possible; the X-rays are presented in the context of a real life scenario. The reader is asked to interpret the X-ray before turning over the page to reveal a model report accompanied by a fully colour annotated version of the X-ray. Uniquely, all cases provide realistic high quality X Ray images, are annotated in full colour, and are fully reported, following international radiology reporting guidelines. This means the X Rays are explained comprehensively, but with clear annotation so that a complete beginner can follow the thinking of the expert. This book has relevance beyond examinations, for post graduate further education and as a day-to-day reference for professionals.
