Jan Smuts grabbed the opportunity to realise his ambition of a Greater South Africa when the First World War ushered in a final scramble for Africa. He set his sights firmly northward upon the German colonies of South West Africa and East Africa.

Smuts’s abilities as a general have been much denigrated by his contemporaries and later historians, but he was no armchair soldier. He first learned his soldier’s craft under General Koos de la Rey and General Louis Botha during the South African War (1899−1902). He emerged from that conflict immersed in Boer manoeuvre doctrine.

After forming the Union Defence Force in 1912, Smuts played an integral part in the German South West African campaign in 1915. Placed in command of the Allied forces in East Africa in 1916, he led a mixed bag of South Africans and imperial troops against the legendary Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck and his Schutztruppen. His penchant for manoeuvre warfare and mounted infantry freed most of the vast German territory from Lettow-Vorbeck’s grip.

General Jan Smuts and his First World War in Africa provides a long-overdue reassessment of Smuts’s generalship and his role in furthering the strategic aims of South Africa and the British Empire during this era.

Over the past century, South Africa’s military has established itself in several defining battles and operations. Preferring manoeuvre over attrition, and often punching above their weight, they have become known for their tenacity, dash, and ability to defy the odds. Their unique command style also sets them apart from other armies and has helped them excel in challenging circumstances.

In 20 Battles, military historians Evert Kleynhans and David Brock Katz investigate how South Africa’s way of war evolved over a 100-year period. They track the evolution of the doctrine and structure of the South African defence forces, rediscovering historical continuity, if any, and the lessons learned in past battles and operations such as Otavifontein, Delville Wood, Southern Ethiopia, Tobruk, Chiusi, Savannah, Cassinga, Cuito Cuanavale and Boleas.

The book also identifies a number of firsts for the defence force, such as the first ever deployment during the 1914 Industrial Strike; the varied deployments across different theatres during both world wars; the first large scale crossborder deployments during the Border War; the first deployment of the new South African National Defence Force after 1994; and, culminating with the recent, and now infamous, Battle of Bangui.

With examples drawn from Australia, Canada, the UK and the USA, Restructuring the Professional Organization will be of interest to all students of organization studies seeking to understand the issues and problems confronting the professions as they move to the new millennium. Topics covered include: * a review of the models of professional organization * drivers of change in professional organizations * internal dynamics of changes in these organizations * new organizational forms and archetypes.

The events that took place in Benghazi, Libya on September 11, 2012, were an American tragedy that ended in the deaths of Ambassador Chris Stevens, Information Officer Sean Smith and former Navy SEALs Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods. No one could have imagined at the start of that evening how quickly the Republican right would politicize the murder of four Americans. Or how the most basic facts would be twisted, confused, and even invented out of thin air to manufacture false charges - first to suggest that President Obama, then seeking re-election, was disengaged, feckless, or even sympathetic to terror, and then, when that faltered, to tarnish the reputation of Hillary Clinton as she mulled a 2016 presidential bid. What has been called the "Benghazi scandal" by Republican investigators, the Fox News Channel, and right-wing radio talkers like Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity is better described as the Benghazi hoax. What should have been an investigation into the protection of U.S. diplomatic posts and our policy in Libya has been hijacked by unfounded and sometimes wild conspiracy theories, many of them centered on Hillary Clinton and her top aides in the State Department, that have not only wasted considerable time and money but distracted attention from real issues that affect American voters. The Benghazi Hoax tells in intimate detail the story of the deception created by those who fill airtime with savage punditry and pseudo-journalism and how the Republicans in charge of the investigative committees were empowered but ultimately failed to find a scandal - any kind of scandal - to tar a Democratic White House. "This book is a must read for anyone interested in how the attack on Benghazi has been hijacked by unfounded and wild conspiracy theories and has therefore remained at the forefront of political conversation for over a year" -Dr. Larry Korb, Senior Fellow, Center for American Progress "Mr. Brock and Mr. Rabin-Havt do a great service to Ambassador Stevens and his team, the 4th estate and the brave men and women serving our country in and out of uniform by his thorough analysis of the Benghazi tragedy and its treatment by conservative American media. By dissecting the conservative press reaction to the Benghazi attack through his vehicle of the fifteen conservative movement perpetuated hoaxes, the authors at once validate the results of the Accountability Review Board and defend the reputations of the men and women involved in the events that lead to the deaths of four great Americans." - Major General Paul Eaton (US Army, ret) "Benghazi was not a hoax but a tragedy that has recurred too frequently under all presidents. Benghazi has been much more politicized, however, as this book describes in fascinating detail. Of course, only Ambassador Chris Stevens could tell us the real truth. Meanwhile his and his colleagues' untimely death is being exploited by partisans for political gain. If this is the way America handles foreign policy in the future, U.S. politics won't stop at the water's edge but will start boiling the oceans." - Rep Jim Cooper (TN-5)

The Fox Effect - How Roger Ailes Turned a Network into a Propaganda Machine (Paperback): David Brock, Ari Rabin-Havt, Media... The Fox Effect - How Roger Ailes Turned a Network into a Propaganda Machine (Paperback)
David Brock, Ari Rabin-Havt, Media Matters for America
R428 Discovery Miles 4 280 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Based on the meticulous research of the news watchdog organization Media Matters for America, David Brock and Ari Rabin-Havt show how Fox News, under its president Roger Ailes, changed from a right-leaning news network into a partisan advocate for the Republican Party.
"The Fox Effect" follows the career of Ailes from his early work as a television producer and media consultant for Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, and George H. W. Bush. Consequently, when he was hired in 1996 as the president of Rupert Murdoch's flagship conservative cable news network, Ailes had little journalism experience, but brought to the job the mindset of a political operative. As Brock and Rabin-Havt demonstrate through numerous examples, Ailes used his extraordinary power and influence to spread a partisan political agenda that is at odds with long-established, widely held standards of fairness and objectivity in news reporting.
Featuring transcripts of leaked audio and memos from Fox News reporters and executives, "The Fox Effect "is a damning indictment of how the network's news coverage and commentators have biased reporting, drummed up marginal stories, and even consciously manipulated established facts in their efforts to attack the Obama administration.

Free Ride - John McCain and the Media (Paperback, New): David Brock, Paul Waldman Free Ride - John McCain and the Media (Paperback, New)
David Brock, Paul Waldman
R498 Discovery Miles 4 980 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

We live in a gotcha media culture that revels in exposing the foibles and hypocrisies of our politicians. But one politician manages to escape this treatment, getting the benefit of the doubt and a positive spin for nearly everything he does: John McCain. Indeed, even during his temporary decline in popularity in 2007, the media continued to support him by lamenting his fate rather than criticizing the flip flops and politicking that undermined his popular image as a maverick.
David Brock and Paul Waldman show how the media has enabled McCain's rise from the Keating Five scandal to the underdog hero of the 2000 primaries to his roller-coaster run for the 2008 nomination. They illuminate how the press falls for McCain's "straight talk" and how the Arizona senator gets away with inconsistencies and misrepresentations for which the media skewers other politicians. This is a fascinating study of how the media shape the political debate, and an essential book for every political junkie.

No public figure in contemporary life has elicited more polarized reactions than Hillary Rodham Clinton. The first presidential spouse who pursued a major policymaking role, the beleaguered first lady has been a heroine and role model to her feminist allies—and a malevolent, power-mad shrew to her conservative foes.

Now David Brock, America's most controversial journalist, takes on the most controversial first lady in history, producing a boldly incisive yet surprisingly sensitive portrait. A political biography of the first order, The Seduction of Hillary Rodham is the story of one strong-willed woman's struggle to maintain her personal and political integrity in the face of powerfully seductive forces, including the appeal of Bill Clinton, a charismatic, talented, but deeply flawed man who may have been both the best and the worst thing that ever happened to her.

In this New York Times bestseller, David Brock, a leading investigative journalist in America, presents an argument of the fact and fiction that made up the Hill-Thomas hearings of 1991. Presenting a thorough investigation of the evidence in the Thomas-Hill hearings, Brock argues that there was no reason to believe Anita Hill's accusations of sexual harassment against Clarence Thomas. "The Real Anita Hill is well written, carefully reasoned, and powerful in its logic. It is must reading for anyone who feels remotely touched by this case. ...The questions [Brock] leaves the reader pondering are ancient but vital: how do you keep separate the bad means and the good ends; how do you keep the bad means from rotting the entire system?" - Christopher Lehmann-Haupt, The New York Times

In a powerful and deeply personal memoir in the tradition of Arthur Koestler’s The God That Failed, David Brock, the original right-wing scandal reporter, chronicles his rise to the pinnacle of the conservative movement and his painful break with it.

David Brock pilloried Anita Hill in a bestseller. His reporting in The American Spectator as part of the infamous “Arkansas Project” triggered the course of events that led to the historic impeachment trial of President Clinton. Brock was at the center of the right-wing dirty tricks operation of the Gingrich era–and a true believer–until he could no longer deny that the political force he was advancing was built on little more than lies, hate, and hypocrisy.

In Blinded By the Right, Brock, who came out of the closet at the height of his conservative renown, tells his riveting story from the beginning, giving us the first insider’s view of what Hillary Rodham Clinton called “the vast right-wing conspiracy.” Whether dealing with the right-wing press, the richly endowed think tanks, Republican political operatives, or the Paula Jones case, Brock names names from Clarence Thomas on down, uncovers hidden links, and demonstrates how the Republican Right’s zeal for power created the poisonous political climate that culminated in George W. Bush’s election.

Now in paperback and with a new afterword by the author, Blinded By the Right is a classic political memoir of our times.
