Brian Friel is Ireland's foremost living playwright, whose work spans fifty years and has won numerous awards, including three Tonys and a Lifetime Achievement Arts Award. Author of twenty-five plays, and whose work is studied at GCSE and A level (UK), and the Leaving Certificate (Ire), besides at undergraduate level, he is regarded as a classic in contemporary drama studies. Christopher Murray's Critical Companion is the definitive guide to Friel's work, offering both a detailed study of individual plays and an exploration of Friel's dual commitment to tradition and modernity across his oeuvre.Beginning with Friel's 1964 work "Philadelphia, Here I Come ," Christopher Murray follows a broadly chronological route through the principal plays, including "Aristocrats," "Faith Healer," "Translations," "Dancing at Lughnasa," "Molly Sweeney" and "The Home Place." Along the way it considers themes of exile, politics, fathers and sons, belief and ritual, history, memory, gender inequality, and loss, all set against the dialectic of tradition and modernity. It is supplemented by essays from Shaun Richards, David Krause and Csilla Bertha providing varying critical perspectives on the playwright's work.
Hierbei ging ic
This monograph investigates the inherent conflict between the literary awakening and the growth of republican nationalism in early 20th century Ireland. Professor Krause is one of the most distinguished students of Irish Literature in America.
This collection by one of America's most distinguished scholars, biographer of Sean O'Casey, and emeritus scholar at Brown University, examines a number of key issues and arguments in Irish intellectual life: Yeats as a political thinker, modern Irish criticism, the treatment of Dublin in modern literature, the conscience of Ireland and the poetry of Synge and Shaw. Additionally there is an in depth examination of O'Casey's work and his place in the canon.
Regarded by O'Casey as his best play, this dark comedy about Irish rural life at mid-century symbolises the struggle between repression and liberty. Although the final victory is to the forces of oppression (in the shape of Father Domineer and his gombeen men) the play is highly amusing. Initially it was regarded as anti-Catholic and suppressed in Ireland and New York. This publication is the only definitive edition available, having been compared with the original manuscript (in the New York Public Library). Professor Krause is the official biographer of O'Casey.
This volume was created to mark the centenary of the birth of Sean O'Casey. It covers every aspect of his life and work, with essays from leading scholars in the field of O'Casey studies: Ronald Ayling, Bernard Benstock, Mary FitzGerald, David Krause, Robert G. Lowery, William J. Maroldo, Alan Simp son and Stanley Weintraub, to gether with a Chronology and a list of productions of O'Casey's plays, both by Robert G. Lowery. The subjects covered include O'Casey's relations with the Abbey Theatre, Lady Gregory, W. B. Yeats, and Bernard Shaw together with assessments of the influence that James Joyce, politics, religion and Ireland had on the play wright and his plays.
