Given the centrality of economics and communication in the Occupy movement, Understanding Occupy from Wall Street to Portland uses economic insights and contemporary theories of communication to better understand the movement at this current juncture in history. This collection is organized by complementary theoretical and methodological perspectives: the global critical cultural and economic understandings of Occupy; the local interpretive ethnographic examinations of a local site Occupy Portland, Oregon; and mediated perspectives analyses of the words of officials and media. The contributors also examine social movement phenomena by stepping outside of social movement theory to analyze the macro- and microprocesses of the Occupy movement, demonstrating the saliency of communication theory. Throughout the volume are in-depth case studies that examine universal narratives about Occupy. One of the challenges of studying Occupy is that members of this movement are committed to not allowing any one person (or entity) to define it. One way the editors acknowledge this and attempt to honor the individualism and postmodern fragmentation of this movement is to consider their findings in light of the three interpretive lenses of the romantic, functional, and critical. This informative and comprehensive text provides a critical lens on the constantly evolving Occupy movement.

The Reluctant Lawman (Hardcover): David Osborne The Reluctant Lawman (Hardcover)
David Osborne
R724 Discovery Miles 7 240 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Jake Harn had served in the Civil War as an officer and upon being discharged he came back to his home near Savannah, Georgia. What he found was that his family, along with others, were living with destruction and devastation caused by the war. On his family's advice he decided to travel west. Early influences helped Jake develop a strong sense of right and wrong. During his adult years he became an individualist who not only took care of himself, but tried to provide comfort to those less fortunate than himself. As an army officer, Jake became an expert with a rifle and while traveling west he began to hone his skills with a hand gun, not to be used as a vocation but as a necessity against the lawless breed that inhabited the Wild West. When he arrived in Burkeville he found himself embroiled in a bloody range war. He became a full-time cowboy by choice and a reluctant part-time lawman when the local sheriff was ambushed by a gang of outlaws.

R931 Discovery Miles 9 310 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Author David Osborne has brought to life the difficult experiences and carefree joys of growing up in Appalachia. The family consisted of thirteen children plus Mom and Dad, and they lived on the old home place that the family referred to simply as "The Holler." The children worked tirelessly alongside their father, Steve, and mother, Thelma, to coax-or perhaps force-a living from the hills and the small amount of level land that they called a farm. "We all had full-time, yearlong jobs," Osborne remembers. "The kinds of work that we did often varied from season to season, but the work itself was always there." Osborne's ancestors, having come from Southwest Virginia through Pike County, Kentucky, and settling in Southern Ohio, always lived a difficult life. There was hunting and fishing, hog killing, cane grinding, and plowing the rocky land to raise a garden. His grandfather was always full of hair-raising stories and tall tales that would curl your toes. He knew that all his ancestors were not "thoroughbreds," and he also knew that some could have been considered "nags," so he knew that the tall tales were not far from the truth. Life was not always about work because above all, there were the children and their attempts to have fun. Through their relentless efforts by the rambunctious, irrepressible, and in many cases, irresponsible children to amuse themselves, they played as hard as they worked. They survived in spite of everything life could throw against them. These were simpler times when the family grew up. There were no phones or television sets in the house. They had no electricity or running water, therefore making the "outhouse" a significant part of their lives. Those that grew up during this time will remember and may linger a moment to compare their lives with the events and situations in this book. Some may tend to look back fondly at the memories, but just keep in mind that there were many memories that we all would just as soon forget

Environment * Spirituality * Personal growth * Virtue ethics Climate change, pollution and diminishing resources mean that the future will be difficult for life on earth. We face an environmental crisis. Clearly we need technological solutions to some of our problems, and appropriate political and social programmes. But to meet the challenge we must also change ourselves. We need the courage to face up to what is happening, the determination to work at the problems and the freedom to let go of the old ways of living which are causing such damage to the earth. And that is hard. The scale of the problem can feel overwhelming. We may be drained by fear or worn down by our seeming lack of progress. In this book David Osborne tells of a long pilgrimage on foot to the island of Iona, an ancient centre of Celtic Christianity. In telling the story he draws on the Bible, the Christian tradition and other sources of wisdom to suggest the qualities we need to develop in ourselves for the journey we face into the future. He points to some of the spiritual resources available to us and suggests ways to develop our spiritual lives in order to grow in compassion, faith, hope and wisdom, while tapping into the energy of the Creator to work for the healing of the creation. The book contains material for personal reflection and group discussion, pointers for further reading, and practical suggestions for a way of living in which we can make our own journey into the future with love. Using the thread of a long walk from Shropshire to Iona, David Osborne weaves together autobiography, spiritual reflection, and passionate concern for the future of the earth threatened by irreversible climate change. A rare resource for all those people struggling to keep faith and hope going in the face of what feel like insuperable odds. - Tim Gorringe, St Luke's Professor of Theology, Exeter University
