Shiksa (Hardcover): David R. Slavitt Shiksa (Hardcover)
David R. Slavitt
R680 Discovery Miles 6 800 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Slavitt's] sentences are so unburdened by the trivial or any kind of distraction, so transparent, that it would be too gross even to say that they are like angels in the sky. Because they don't just hang around in the sky like angels; they are the sky. They are not merely fluent, though fluency is hard to come by and something to be treasured; they flow as unhaltingly as a creek or waterfall. If I compare Slavitt's sentences to natural phenomena, it may be because he himself is rather a natural phenomenon: a man who writes easily, copiously, and beautifully. Kelly cherry, author of A Kind of Dream He is an extraordinarily learned writer, intimate with the best literature of the Western tradition from the poets of the Greek Anthology to the contemporary poets whose translations he has edited for the Pennsylvania series of Greek tragedies and comedies. None of it is lost on him. The great works have worked upon him, and this is one of his means of achieving greatness. Daniel Mark Epstein, author of The Ballad of Bob Dylan The name of David R. Slavitt may not yet be one to conjure with in literary circles, although if he were a magician, let's say, or a juggler, his skill in keeping so many poems, novels, translations, and other works in the air would have drawn gasps of astonishment and awe, as he added title upon title until he has now tossed out for our enjoyment over 100 books. John M. Ridland, author of Fires of Home Slavitt is a master satirist, whose elegant, irreverent prose is full of witty quotations that we want to read aloud to friends. Philadelphia Inquirer

The Other Four Plays of Sophocles - Ajax, Women of Trachis, Electra, and Philoctetes (Paperback): Sophocles The Other Four Plays of Sophocles - Ajax, Women of Trachis, Electra, and Philoctetes (Paperback)
Sophocles; Translated by David R. Slavitt
R509 Discovery Miles 5 090 Out of stock

There are seven surviving tragedies by Sophocles. Three of them form the Theban Plays, which recount the story of Thebes during and after the reign of Oedipus. Here, David Slavitt translates the remaining tragedies - the "other four plays:" Ajax, Women of Trachis, Electra, and Philoctetes. Punchy and entertaining, Slavitt reads Athena's opening line in Ajax as: "I've got my eye on you, Odysseus. Always." By simplifying the Greek and making obscure designations more accessible - specifying the character Athena in place of "aegis-wearing goddess," for example - his translations are highly performable. The Other Four Plays of Sophocles will help students discover underlying thematic connections across plays as well. Praise for David R. Slavitt: "Slavitt's translation is ...lively and sometimes witty." (Times Literary Supplement, reviewing Slavitt's translation of Seneca). "The best version of Ovid's Metamorphoses available in English today...It is readable, alive, at times slangy, and actually catches Ovid's tone." (Philadelphia Inquirer, reviewing Slavitt's translation of The Metamorphoses of Ovid). "Slavitt's ability is clearly in evidence...These translations are rendered in lucid, contemporary English, bringing before us the atrocities, horrors, and grotesqueries of Imperial Rome. " (Classical Outlook, reviewing Slavitt's translation of Seneca). "Excellent translations that suit the ear and strengthen the feeble spirit of the time...One will do well to read these hymns, these poems, and find nourishment in them in Slavitt's translations." (Anglican Theological Review, reviewing Slavitt's translation of Hymns of Prudentius).

La Vita Nuova (Paperback): Dante Alighieri La Vita Nuova (Paperback)
Dante Alighieri; Translated by David R. Slavitt; Introduction by Seth Lerer
R670 Discovery Miles 6 700 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

La Vita Nuova (1292-94) has many aspects. Dante's libello, or "little book," is most obviously a book about love. In a sequence of thirty-one poems, the author recounts his love of Beatrice from his first sight of her (when he was nine and she eight), through unrequited love and chance encounters, to his profound grief sixteen years later at her sudden and unexpected death. Linked with Dante's verse are commentaries on the individual poems-their form and meaning-as well as the events and feelings from which they originate. Through these commentaries the poet comes to see romantic love as the first step in a spiritual journey that leads to salvation and the capacity for divine love. He aims to reside with Beatrice among the stars. David Slavitt gives us a readable and appealing translation of one of the early, defining masterpieces of European literature, animating its verse and prose with a fluid, lively, and engaging idiom and rhythm. His translation makes this first major book of Dante's stand out as a powerful work of art in its own regard, independent of its "junior" status to La Commedia. In an Introduction, Seth Lerer considers Dante as a poet of civic life. "Beatrice," he reminds us, "lives as much on city streets and open congregations as she does in bedroom fantasies and dreams."

The Poem of Queen Esther (Hardcover): Joaao Pinto Delgado, David R. Slavitt The Poem of Queen Esther (Hardcover)
Joaao Pinto Delgado, David R. Slavitt
R644 Discovery Miles 6 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is a translation from the Spanish of a long poem based on the biblical book of Esther. The author, Joao Pinto Delgado (c. 1585-1653) lived in Portugal, the Spanish Netherlands, and France. The choice of subject for this poem, with its theme of resistance to murderous oppression, was a subversive act of protest against the persecution of th Jews by the Inquisition. Today, it is equally resonant with the events of the Holocaust. It is also an elegant piece of Renaissance writing. Slavitt's skillful translation preserves the thyme scheme of the original, and wonderfully evokes the lavishness and sensuousness of Pinto Delgado's descriptions.

The Consolation of Philosophy (Paperback): Boethius The Consolation of Philosophy (Paperback)
Boethius; Translated by David R. Slavitt; Introduction by Seth Lerer
R442 Discovery Miles 4 420 Out of stock

In this highly praised new translation of Boethius s "The Consolation of Philosophy," David R. Slavitt presents a graceful, accessible, and modern version for both longtime admirers of one of the great masterpieces of philosophical literature and those encountering it for the first time. Slavitt preserves the distinction between the alternating verse and prose sections in the Latin original, allowing us to appreciate the Menippian parallels between the discourses of literary and logical inquiry. His prose translations are lively and colloquial, conveying the argumentative, occasionally bantering tone of the original, while his verse translations restore the beauty and power of Boethius s poetry. The result is a major contribution to the art of translation.

Those less familiar with "Consolation" may remember it was written under a death sentence. Boethius (c. 480 524), an Imperial official under Theodoric, Ostrogoth ruler of Rome, found himself, in a time of political paranoia, denounced, arrested, and then executed two years later without a trial. Composed while its author was imprisoned, cut off from family and friends, it remains one of Western literature s most eloquent meditations on the transitory nature of earthly belongings, and the superiority of things of the mind. In an artful combination of verse and prose, Slavitt captures the energy and passion of the original. And in an introduction intended for the general reader, Seth Lerer places Boethius s life and achievement in context.

Orlando Furioso: A New Verse Translation (Paperback): Ludovico Ariosto Orlando Furioso: A New Verse Translation (Paperback)
Ludovico Ariosto; Translated by David R. Slavitt; Introduction by Charles S. Ross
R808 Discovery Miles 8 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The appearance of David R. Slavitt s translation of "Orlando Furioso" ( Mad Orlando ), one of the great literary achievements of the Italian Renaissance, is a publishing event. With this lively new verse translation, Slavitt introduces readers to Ariosto s now neglected masterpiece a poem whose impact on Western literature can scarcely be exaggerated. It was a major influence on Spenser s "Faerie Queene." William Shakespeare borrowed one of its plots. Voltaire called it the equal of the "Iliad," the "Odyssey," and "Don Quixote" combined. More recently, Italo Calvino drew inspiration from it. Borges was a fan. Now, through translations of generous selections from this longest of all major European poems, Slavitt brings the poem to life in ways previous translators have not. At the heart of Ariosto s romance are Orlando s unrequited love for the pagan princess Angelica and his jealous rage when she elopes. The action takes place against a besieged Paris, as Charlemagne and his Christian paladins defend the city against the Saracen king. The poem, however, obeys no geography or rules but its own, as the story moves by whim from Japan to the Hebrides to the moon; it includes such imaginary creatures as the hippogriff and a sea monster called the orc. "Orlando Furioso" is Dante s medieval universe turned upside down and made comic. Characterized by satire, parody, and irony, the poem celebrates a new humanistic Renaissance conception of man in an utterly fantastical world. Slavitt s translation captures the energy, comedy, and great fun of Ariosto s Italian.

Ausonius - Three Amusements (Paperback): David R. Slavitt Ausonius - Three Amusements (Paperback)

R484 Discovery Miles 4 840 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

"Despite the resurgence of interest in the field of late antiquity, there are still too few authors from the period available in translation--and of the few who are translated, most, like Ausonius, are available only in arcane and unreadable English. Ausonius is one of the more accessible late antique writers, and Slavitt's choice of texts to translate reflects his accessibility--the "Cento" gives us a taste of Ausonius's bizarre sense of humor, and the "Commemorations" gives us a glimpse into his personal network of friends, teachers, and relatives, and into the everyday life of a wealthy provincial city. Slavitt's translations are simple, direct, often very funny, and sometimes moving. His "Cento" is a tour de force recreation."--Martha Malamud, editor, "Arethusa" Ausonius, the most famous of the learned poets active in the second half of the fourth century, was born at Bordeaux and taught school there for 30 years before being summoned to court to teach the future emperor Gratian. He subsequently held important public offices, returning to Bordeaux and private life after Gratian's death in 383. The subjects of many of his poems are typical of the academic world of the time. His "Commemorations of the Professors of Bordeaux," a sequence of light verse obituaries of local teachers, in which people are honored--or gossiped about--in their daily occupations, has been called an illustrious poetic precedent to Edgar Lee Masters's "Spoon River Anthology." To a literary verse translation of the "Commemorations" David Slavitt has added versions of Ausonius's "Nuptial Cento," assembled from snippets of Shakespeare (Ausonius's original is a pastiche of Virgil), and selected epigrams. "Skill, wit, learning, poetic dexterity, and flabbergasting irreverence--very Ausonian, very amusing and impressive too."--"Classical Review" David R. Slavitt has published more than sixty books: original poetry, translations (recently "Broken Columns," of Statius and Claudian, available from the University of Pennsylvania Press), novels, critical works, and short stories. He worked for seven years as a journalist at "Newsweek" and continues to do freelance reporting and reviewing. With Palmer Bovie he coedited the Complete Roman Drama in Translation series and the Penn Greek Drama Series. Also of interest: "Epinician Odes and Dithyrambs of Bacchylides" Translated by David R. The Book of the Twelve Prophets (Hardcover): David R. Slavitt The Book of the Twelve Prophets (Hardcover)
David R. Slavitt
R1,045 Discovery Miles 10 450 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is a glittering new translation of the portion of the Hebrew Bible known as the Book of the Twelve Prophets, or the Twelve "Minor" Prophets. In the Bible, the books of the prophets are arranged in rough order of length. The present group of writings thus appears after the so-called "major" prophets (Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel), and includes the much shorter texts of Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habbakuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi. At the time when all biblical books were written on scrolls, these twelve brief prophetic texts were traditionally written on a single scroll, and so came to be considered a single book. "Minor" with respect to length only, they are from the literary point of view some of the most interesting texts in the Bible -- passionate, visionary, and written with genuine literary sophistication. David Slavitt's brilliant modern translation breathes fresh life into these powerful ancient texts.

R882 Discovery Miles 8 820 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Epinician Odes and Dithyrambs of Bacchylides Translated by David R. Slavitt "Slavitt has an astonishing knack for making classical poetry readable and, above all, experienceable. . . . He] seems to have a free and easy--and very personal--conversance with the ancient world, and this is refreshing indeed; it makes that whole world available to us in ways it has not been before. . . . He has such an easy, tolerant, believable relationship with the ancient world and its authors that making the changeover from that world to ours is less a leap than an enjoyable stroll."--James Dickey Until a century ago, the fifth-century Greek poet Bacchylides was known only by 107 nonsequential lines buried as quotations in the writings of other ancient authors. With the discovery in 1896 of a papyrus containing his work, 1,382 lines were reassembled and the poems of Bacchylides finally began to take shape for the modern reader. Slavitt argues in the Introduction to this collection that, although Bacchylides is often considered a "lesser Pindar," he is a poet who warrants consideration. "He deserves attention not because he is beetling, like Pindar, but because he is not. He relies on craftsmanship and reliably displays an attractive grace and elegance." David R. Slavitt was educated at Andover and Yale and has published more than seventy books: original poetry, translations, novels, critical works, and short stories. Slavitt brings to this little-known body of verse a fresh voice, vividly capturing the tone and style of the originals while conveying a lively sense of fun.

Broken Columns Two Roman Epic Fragments: "The Achilleid" of Publius Papinius Statius and "The Rape of Proserpine" of Claudius Claudianus Edited and Translated by David R. Slavitt. Afterword by David Konstan "With unerring instinct Slavitt has juxtaposed two witty and ironic post-Ovidian tales of coming of age, Statius's unfinished "Deeds of Achilles" and Claudian's "Rape of Proserpina." Those were the mythical days when teenagers were charming and rape consensual (for Deidamia) or at least (for Proserpina) the path to queenly power. Epic was never the same after Ovid, whether in Statius's sentimental comedy of love and war or in Claudian's darker divine intrigue sacrificing a mother's love to avert an infernal coup d'etat. Slavitt's versatile idiom makes vivid the personalities of Statius's drama and updates Claudian's self-conscious poetics in versions that are both free and true to the poets' art."--Elaine Fantham, Princeton University "Slavitt does a real service by putting into English verse for the first time this century two poems of great grace and charm. . . . Konstan's afterword itself is a gem. . . . I would urge anyone who thinks that Statius only wrote gruesome epic and Claudian only dull panegyric to read this slim and sprightly volume."--"Bryn Mawr Classical Review" "David Slavitt appears to be fluent not only in Latin but also in hexameters. His translation seems to flow effortlessly from his pen. His speech and vocabulary are contemporary and easy to read. . . . This slim volume is further enhanced by the brilliant essay by David Konstan that is appended to it. The essay is reminiscent of the introductions written by R. C. Jebb in his editions of the plays of Sophocles--a combination of a scholarly discussion of the underlying myth in the text interspersed with perceptive literary criticism."--"American Book Review" There is more to classical literature than just the classics. Here David Slavitt expands the canon by presenting vivid, graceful, and amusing translations of two neglected fragmentary works of Latin literature. The first is Publius Papinius Statius's first-century epic "Achilleid," an extraordinary fusion of epic and New Comedy sentiments and humor that may represent the earliest literary imagining of the charm of adolescence. It relates the story of the education of Achilles under the centaur Chiron, his adopting the disguise of a girl during his sojourn at the court of Lycomedes in Scyros, his love affair with Deidamia, his detection by Ulysses and Diomedes, and his departure for Troy. The second work is Claudius Claudianus's unfinished fourth-century epic version of the rape of Proserpine. The two works together make a delightful pair. The afterword by David Konstan explores the traditions in which--and against which--Statius and Claudian composed their versions of these well-known stories. David R. Slavitt was educated at Andover and Yale and has published dozens of books: original poetry, translations, novels, critical works, and short stories. Seneca - The Tragedies (Paperback, New edition): Seneca Seneca - The Tragedies (Paperback, New edition)
Seneca; Translated by David R. Slavitt
R926 Discovery Miles 9 260 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Are there no limits to human cruelty? Is there any divine justice? Do the gods even matter if they do not occupy themselves with rewarding virtue and punishing wickedness? Seneca's plays might be dismissed as bombastic and extravagant answers to such questions--if so much of human history were not "Senecan" in its absurdity, melodrama, and terror. Here is an honest artist confronting the irrationality and cruelty of his world--the Rome of Caligula, Claudius, and Nero--and his art reflects the stress of the encounter. The surprise, perhaps, is that Seneca's world is so like our own.

In these plays, Aristophanes brings every rhetorical strategem into play to treat the reader to stories of one man's attempt to create a "war-free zone," the rescue of the imprisoned Peace on the back of a giant dung beetle, a satire of Euripides's sympathies for women, and the hustling and healing of a blind and destitute Wealth in order to redistribute the world's riches. Translations are by Jack Flavin (Acharnians), Fred Beake (Peace), David Slavitt (Celebrating Ladies), and Palmer Bovie (Wealth).
