Max Krüger, Debora De Castro Leal, David Randall, Peter Tolmie
R4,203 Discovery Miles 42 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This edited collection brings together a range of experiences from the field, largely in the context of CSCW and HCI. It focuses specifically on the experiences of people who have worked in difficult, tense, delicate and sometimes conflictual and dangerous settings. The tensions faced by researchers and, more importantly, how they manage to deal with them are often under-remarked. Unlike the bulk of published ethnographic work, the chapters in this book deal more explicitly with the various practical problems that researchers with varying degrees of experience face. Our aim in this book is to give a voice to researchers who have sometimes contended with unexpected issues and who sometimes have had to face them on their own. We explore incidents which may entail emotional conflict, embarrassment and shame, feelings of isolation, arguments with other members of a team, political pressures, and ideological confusions, to name but a few.  Senior figures in research laboratories and elsewhere may provide intellectual direction and support but may not always recognise the personal and problematic nature of qualitative enquiry undertaken by relatively inexperienced researchers. The chapters examine feelings of isolation, the difficulty of ‘taking sides’, the negotiation of personal, ethical, and political pressures in the field, and dealing with conflicting visions of what the research should be about. The book is a resource for those embarking on the challenges of working in unfamiliar or difficult settings and moreover should act as a reminder to academics who might have forgotten the practical issues that researchers can face and how they deal with them.

Leadership in Post-Compulsory Education (Hardcover): Marian Iszatt-White, Connor Graham, David Randall, Mark Rouncefield Leadership in Post-Compulsory Education (Hardcover)
Marian Iszatt-White, Connor Graham, David Randall, Mark Rouncefield
R6,007 Discovery Miles 60 070 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This is an empirical study of everyday leadership practices in action in a post-compulsory education context. The issue of 'leadership'; the need for good, insightful and decisive leaders is a prominent theme in Education. Yet few can define exactly what leadership is. This book examines the phenomenon of leadership in post-compulsory education through the careful description and analysis of a long-term observational study of college Principals at work. In contrast to other, more theoretical, attempts to understand leadership, this book develops an understanding of leadership by pointing to specific examples of what leaders actually do as they go about their everyday work of resolving organisational issues. Instead of presenting leaders as charismatic heroes this book investigates a number of familiar, routine, aspects of everyday leadership work: how leadership is 'performed'; the various technologies - email, documents, slide presentations - involved in leadership work; the everyday management of organisational personnel and meetings; and, how success and failure is defined and understood by the leaders themselves. It concludes with some suggestions of what is learned from understanding leadership as everyday work and some 'cautionary tales' for those who would become educational leaders themselves.

Fieldwork for Design - Theory and Practice (Hardcover, 2007 ed.): David Randall, Richard Harper, Mark Rouncefield Fieldwork for Design - Theory and Practice (Hardcover, 2007 ed.)
David Randall, Richard Harper, Mark Rouncefield
R4,424 Discovery Miles 44 240 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Fieldwork for Design looks at why ethnographic approaches have been turned to in the design of computing devices for the workplace, for the home and elsewhere. It presents a history of ethnography, both as it was practiced before computer science picked it up and since, most especially in the CSCW and HCI domains. It examines, further, the various ethnographic or a ~fieldworka (TM) frameworks currently popular, explaining and examining what each claims and entails. The focus of the book throughout is on the practical relationship between theory and practice, a relationship that is often misunderstood yet fundamental to successful design.

The book is illustrated with real examples from the authorsa (TM) various experiences in academic and commercial settings, reporting on the use of ethnography before, during and after design innovation and implementation. The result is a book that provides the working knowledge necessary for using any kind of ethnographic approach in the design of computer technologies.

Written to provide an overview of the topic for researchers and graduates, as well as practitioners, this book will prove an invaluable resource for all in the field.

As an HCI researcher and practitioner, I am delighted to see, at last, a balanced view about the practice of ethnography within our field.

Gary Marsden, Associate Professor of HCI, University of Cape Town, South Africa

Dr Dave Randall is Senior Lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University, UK

Professor Richard Harper is a Senior Researcher for Microsoft

Mark Rouncefield is a Senior Research Fellow at Lancaster University

This book is concerned with the associated issues between the differing paradigms of academic and organizational computing infrastructures. Driven by the increasing impact Information Communication Technology (ICT) has on our working and social lives, researchers within the Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) field try and find ways to situate new hardware and software in rapidly changing socio-digital ecologies. Adopting a design-orientated research perspective, researchers from the European Society for Socially Embedded Technologies (EUSSET) elaborate on the challenges and opportunities we face through the increasing permeation of society by ICT from commercial, academic, design and organizational perspectives. Designing Socially Embedded Technologies in the Real-World is directed at researchers, industry practitioners and will be of great interest to any other societal actors who are involved with the design of IT systems.

The Great Reporters (Paperback): David Randall The Great Reporters (Paperback)
David Randall
R658 Discovery Miles 6 580 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Who are the greatest reporters in history?

This unique book is the first to try and answer this question. Author David Randall searched nearly two centuries of newspapers and magazines, consulted editors and journalism experts worldwide, and the result is The Great Reporters---13 in-depth profiles of the best journalists who ever lived. They include nine Americans and four Britons, ten men and three women, whose lives were full of adventure, wit, and the considerable ingenuity required to bring the story home. Among chapters are those on the reporter who:
Booked himself onto a ship likely to be sunk by the Germans so he could report its torpedoing Was called out to a multiple shooting, who interviewed 50 witnesses, went back to the office, and wrote a Pulitzer Prize-winning story of 4,000 words in two and a half hours Was deemed useless by her teacher but who went on to become the greatest crime reporter in history Wrote a story that changed the map of Europe Out-bluffed a top Soviet official to get into Russia so he could cover the appalling famine there Feigned madness to get herself locked up in an asylum so she could expose its terrible conditions Was the best ever to apply words to newsprint Became a national hero in America because he stood up for the little guy and his war reporting told it like it really was At the age of 63, and after three major operations, went under-cover in Iran so she could report on the regime's repression Was nearly fired for fouling up his first major assignment, but went on to shock his nation with his courageous war reporting Wrote faster than anyone who could write better and better than anyone who could write faster Single-handedly tookon the tobacco industry Said no to William Randolph Hearst
Each profile tells of the reporter's life and his or her major stories, how they were obtained, and their impact. Packed with anecdotes, and inspiring accounts of difficulties overcome, the book quotes extensively from each reporter's work. It also includes an essay on the history of reporting, charting the technologies, economics, and attitudes that made it the way it is---from the invention of the telegraph to the Internet. The Great Reporters is not just the story of 13 remarkable people, it is the story of how society's information hunter-gatherers succeed in bringing us all what we need to know.

Financial organizations, like many others, are undergoing radical change. This is affecting both their organizational processes and the technology that supports those processes. This book reports on the use of sociological ethnography in helping guide these changes, in terms of helping better understanding and redrawing work processes, and through providing more accurate and flexible understanding of the role technology plays. It places the reported research in context by contrasting it with those approaches more commonly associated with change, including business process engineering, participative design and soft systems methodologies. It also explains the benefits of ethnography, as well as the potential it has in helping achieve more desirable change in any and all organizations, financial services included. The book should be of interest to all international researchers concerned with organizational and technological change, as well as managers of organizational development. It should also interest advanced students in sociology, anthropology, management science and organizational studies. The authors have published widely in the various disciplines associated with organization

The Incredible Nellie Bly: Journalist, Investigator, Feminist, and Philanthropist (Hardcover): Luciana Cimino The Incredible Nellie Bly: Journalist, Investigator, Feminist, and Philanthropist (Hardcover)
Luciana Cimino; Illustrated by Sergio Algozzino; Preface by David Randall
R423 Discovery Miles 4 230 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A visual biography of the groundbreaking investigative journalist

Born in 1864, Nellie Bly was a woman who did not allow herself to be defined by the time she lived in, she rewrote the narrative and made her own way.

Luciana Cimino’s meticulously researched graphic-novel biography tells Bly’s story through Miriam, a fictionalized female student at the Columbia School of Journalism in 1921. While interviewing the famous journalist, Miriam learns not only about Bly's more sensational adventures, but also about her focus on self-reliance from an early age, the scathing letter to the editor that jump-started her career as a newspaper columnist, and her dedication to the empowerment of women. In fact, in 1884, Bly was one of the few journalists who interviewed Belva Ann Lockwood, who was the first woman candidate for a presidential election―a contest that was ultimately won by Grover Cleveland―and Bly predicted correctly that women would not get the vote until 1920.

Of course Bly’s most well-known exploits are also covered―how she pretended to be mad in order to get institutionalized so she could carry out an undercover investigation in an insane asylum, and Bly's greatest feat of all, her journey around the world in 72 days―alone―which was unthinkable for a woman in the late 19th century. As Miriam learns more of Bly's story, she realizes that the most important stories are necessarily the ones with the most dramatic headlines, but the ones that, in Nellie’s words, “come from a deep feeling.”

This beautifully executed graphic novel paints a portrait of a woman who defied societal expectations―not only with her investigative journalism, but with her keen mind for industry, and her original inventions.

David Randall, Pascal Salembier
R2,849 Discovery Miles 28 490 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Many challenges were identified in CSCW some thirty years ago, and some of these remain problematic today. However they are being progressively transformed and this edited volume contains contributions that demonstrate how these new challenges are being dealt with in a variety of ways, reflecting the balance of rigour and creativity that has always characterised the field.

Originally presented at COOP 08 which took place in Carry-le-Rouet, France in 2008, the contributions to this volume have been substantially extended and revised. New technologies, new domains and new methods are described for supporting design and evaluation. Taking a progressive and critical stance, the authors cover a variety of themes including inter-organisational working, non task-based environments, creativity, and the development of Web 2.0 (and even Web 3.0) applications, including new cooperative mechanisms and new classification possibilities."

David Randall
R389 R319 Discovery Miles 3 190 Save R70 (18%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The suburbs - long sneered at for being dreary and stultifying - have always been far livelier and more entertaining than they're given credit for. In this witty and sharply observed account of what it was like to grow up in one in the 1950s and '60s, David Randall gives the other side of suburbia: full of absurdities and happiness, scandals and follies, and inhabitants both sage and silly. Here, at last, is the truth about what life was really like behind the often-closed (but not always net) curtains of our semi-detacheds. This is that rare book: a most unmiserable memoir.
