'Sustainable development' is the catchphrase of the 1990s.
Governments around the world, international institutions, local
organizations and NGOs have committed themselves to its principles
and have adopted policies to promote it. But 'sustainable
development' is difficult to define - let alone implement - and its
proponents and advocates may all interpret it in very different
ways. This introductory guide provides a clear and accurate account
of what sustainable development actually is. David Reid gives an
overview of the history of the concept and how it has evolved in
recent years, describes the obstacles to achieving sustainable
development, and looks at recent progress towards implementing it -
and at how much we have still to do.
The Metaphysical Poets provides an introduction to the work of six
strikingly various and original poets- Donne, Herbert, Crashaw,
Vaughan, Marvell and Traherne. By closely examining how the poems
work, the book aims to help readers at all stages of proficiency
and knowledge to enjoy and critically appreciate the ways in which
fantastic and elaborate styles may express private intensities. The
emphasis is on the differences covered by the term 'Metaphysical'
and on the rich and strange diversity of the poets' inner lives.
The book examines the expressive forms of interiority, the
characteristic inward turn of Metaphysical wit, and compares the
wit of its six poets with the non-introspective wit of poets such
as Cowley, the Cavaliers and the Augustans. The discussion of each
poet is preceded by a 'Life' in which the biographical facts,
personal, cultural and political, are treated with a view to
illuminating the concerns of the poems.
Emergent Teaching inspires teachers to teach with more spontaneity
and creativity within an educational environment that is highly
constrained. It demonstrates, through descriptive stories, creative
strategies and provides an intellectual foundation for emergent
teaching. The authors show how teachers can relate subject matter
to students' lives and experience. They illustrate rituals and
processes that help establish a caring learning community. Finally,
the book applies the theories of complexity and chaos while
reaffirming the natural wisdom that teachers possess within
themselves. The authors have chosen a narrative format that
"models" rather than "tells," and encourages readers to connect to
their own stories and experiences. The book is consistent with the
theoretical understandings and research in the complexity sciences
but takes a narrative approach, giving examples and illustrations
of ideas through stories, myths, and parables that act as metaphors
and illustrations. Key topics and practices embedded in these
stories include: *teaching the whole person *strategies for
creative teaching *new understandings of process *meaning-centered
learning *building community in the classroom *strengthening the
student/teacher relationship *project-based learning *using art and
nature in teaching *embodied learning *incorporating story and
narrative in teaching *rites of passage *embracing the
unpredictable, uncharted spaces in teaching

Nutritional Aspects of Bone Health provides an in-depth review of
the role of diet in the development and maintenance of bone health
throughout the lifecycle, and prevention of osteoporosis in later
life. The book is multi-authored by the world's leading researchers
in this area, who have come together to formulate the first ever
textbook on nutritional aspects of bone health, and includes the
current and cutting edge science underpinning the prevention of
bone disease. The book is structured such that, in the first
section, an overview is provided on what is meant by the terms bone
health and osteoporosis and includes key areas such as
epidemiology, genetics and the impact of non-nutritional exogenous
factors influencing the skeleton. The second section details the
established nutritional factors affecting bone health, namely
calcium and vitamin D. Section three focuses on the role of
macronutrients and macrominerals in bone health, namely protein,
phosphorus, sodium and potassium, including the criticality of
acid-base homeostasis to skeletal integrity. Section four addresses
the effects of microminerals, trace elements, vitamin K, vitamin A
and isoflavones on bone. Section five focuses attention on key
issues connected with the influence of diet and anorexia and
bulimia on bone health including nutrition and bone growth;
nutrient: gene interactions; nutrient: drug interactions; and the
final section discusses the effect of diet on reduction of fracture
risk; the cost-effectiveness of nutritional supplements; and
nutritional strategies for prevention and treatment of
osteoporosis. The book is targeted at a number of key audiences.
Whilst there is a focus on the academic research world and those
principally involved in education, at both undergraduate and
postgraduate levels, the book will also be of considerable interest
to those participating in the treatment and prevention of
osteoporosis, namely those working in the medical and health
promotion fields. Furthermore, Nutritional Aspects of Bone Health
will be of particular interest to the food industry as the
popularity of foods designed to target specific health issues
increases, and nutritional therapy has a critical role to play in
this major public health problem.

During the menopause, both the quantity and quality of bone
decline rapidly, leading to a dramatic increase in the risk of
fracture in postmenopausal women. Although many factors are known
to be associated with osteoporotic fractures, measures to identify
and treat women at risk are underused in clinical practice.
Consequently, osteoporosis is frequently not detected until a
fracture occurs. Identification of postmenopausal women at high
risk of fracture therefore is a priority.
The "Handbook of Osteoporosis" reviews the risk factors, and
lifestyle changes that can help prevent osteoporosis and evaluates
the pharmacological treatments currently available.

Action comedy based on the Marvel comic strip. Run-of-the-mill high
school student Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson), disillusioned with
his humdrum life, is inspired by the heroes of the comic books he
loves to become a real-life superhero called 'Kick-Ass'. His first
attempts to fight evil-doers meet with little success, but
undeterred by his various setbacks Dave perseveres and eventually
joins forces with mysterious vigilante Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage) and
his daughter Hit-Girl (Chloë Moretz) to bring down local crime boss
Frank D'Amico (Mark Strong).
Water is recognized as being a critically important determinant of
the properties of many foods. It is therefore appropriate to devote
a meeting to the topic. The first such meeting was organized by the
late Ron Duckworth, and held in 1974 at the University of
Strathclyde in Scotland. As a result of this first meeting, the
organization known as International Symposium on the Properties of
Water (ISOPOW) was born, and since that first ISOPOW meeting there
have been five international meetings. At each meeting,
participants from academia and from industry have shared state of
the science information pertinent to the role of water in foods.
Each meeting has served as a review of the current state of
knowledge. ISOPOW 6 is the first of these meetings where Ron
Duckworth's presence has not been felt, though he clearly attended
the meeting in spirit. A lively group of academics and industrial
scientists assembled in Santa Rosa, California, to discuss the
current state of the science. As meeting chairperson, I must
acknowledge the tremendous contributions made by the organizing
committee, by the session chairpersons and by the central
committee. Without all their help, nothing could have been
achieved. Most important to the success of the meeting, however,
was the very active participation of all attendees. In all seven
sessions, the papers were excellent and their discussion was very
spirited.
In Making Sense of Metaphors and Other Tropes, veteran literary
scholar David Reid examines figures of speech, arguing that figures
of speech in prose and poetry, literature and talk, make sense as
turns of rhetoric by means of their energeia (vividness, radiance,
eclat). Reid analyzes figures from Homer to literary giants of the
twentieth century, mostly drawn from poetry, but also from prose
and colloquial turns of phrase. Making Sense of Metaphors will
delight all those who enjoy literature and good talk, and make them
think about what so takes their fancy. The book's case for the
centrality of energeia will also command the interest of
philosophers, linguists, and theorists of poetry, not least for the
objections it raises to some of their favorite lines of thought.
The book concludes with an examination of transference of agency,
an effect of many tropes. Although transference of agency reorders
our ideas, the argument of the book is that agency falls under the
rule of rhetoric, a forceful expressing of an idea rather than a
means of arriving at one - a process of speech, not a fundamental
shape of understanding or trick of mind.
Among the ranks of the most difficult military training on the
planet, BUD/S (Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL) includes the
ultimate challenge of endurance known as Hell Week. It's the
pivotal test faced by every Navy SEAL: 120 sleepless hours of
relentless physical punishment, interrupted only by
hypothermia-inducing surf torture. Ensign Grey thought he knew what
to expect, but when Seaman Murray attempts to blackmail an
instructor who is determined to see him fail, Hell Week takes on a
new meaning. With deteriorating health and a dangerous enemy in hot
pursuit, the two unlikely friends struggle to survive. What happens
in the darkness at the edge of the Pacific will change their lives
forever.

Los Angeles is the labyrinth at the end of the American Dream, a
city often celebrated, often condemned--rarely understood. In this
fascinating and unusual collection David Reid has gathered together
the novelists, journalists, and cultural critics who could best
debunk the myths, define the truths, and decipher the strange
iconography of this "bronzed paradise" of fourteen million
inhabitants. Here are reports and reflections on: the new
Latin-American and Asian populations of South Central and the East
Side and the old establishment in the West Side's hidden hilltop
enclaves; Downtown with its heavily mortgaged office towers held by
Canadian and Japanese landlords; the shuttered factories, thriving
sweatshops, and gerrymandered "rotten boroughs" of post-industrial
L.A.; architecture from Irving Gill to Frank O. Gehry; avatars and
messiahs from Krishnamurti to L. Ron Hubbard; rituals of power and
abjection in Movieland; and yoga and lust in Beverly Hills. Los
Angeles Times and Nation columnist Alexander Cockburn; Mike Davis,
author of City of Quartz; L.A. Weekly writers Lynell George and
Ruben Martinez; novelists Carolyn See, Eve Babitz, and David
Thomson; architectural historian Thomas S. Hines; and Academy
Award-winning screenwriter Jeremy Larner are among those who
investigate the mysteries of the city which, as Cockburn writes, is
"the only megalopolis of the First World growing at a rate
comparable to those supercities--Sao Paulo, Cairo, and Canton--of
the Third World".
This book contains invaluable reference tables and maths formulae
for trainee and professional marine engineers. Focussing on
subjects most commonly required in mechanical and marine
engineering (including a section on naval architecture), the
formulae are graduated to cover the subjects at all stages from
technician level to degree, from cadet level to the Extra First
Class Certificate. After each subject, there are blank pages in
which extra design data and formulae can be added, and where the
understanding of basic concepts is particularly essential, the text
includes extra definitions and notes, all of which helps to create
a user-friendly and practical resource.
Conceived as a novelistic journey through the worlds of California,
"West of the West" offers a vivid and diverse collection of
writings on the state where extremes of every sort are dramatically
evident in the weather, geography, and people. This richly
fascinating collection represents the experience of California both
physical and metaphysical, in fiction, poetry, essays, travel
writing, confessions, reportage, and social criticism. The authors
are native Californians, born-again Californians, exiles, emigres,
critics, and visitors of every kind - Jack Kerouac, Joan Didion,
Amy Tan, Simone de Beauvoir, Carey McWilliams, Tom Wolfe, Gore
Vidal, Octavio Paz, Jean Baudrillard, Ishmael Reed, and, Allen
Ginsberg - to name just a few.
