The British Colonial Record to 1939 This history of British
colonial rule in Nyasaland, now Malawi, from 1891 up to the
outbreak of the Second World War, is based on extensive research in
government archives as well as information obtained from newspapers
and missionary letters. It briefly tracks how the territory came
under British rule and then focuses in more detail than previous
studies on how Whitehall treated this highly individual but easily
neglected territory and how this fitted into the broader British
African context. At the local level there is also closer
examination, both critical and sympathetic, of the personalities
and performances of successive Governors and their administrative
staff in relation to economic, social and security policy, within
cripplingly small budgets. The activities of the small European
commercial, planting and missionary community are also closely
followed for their political influence and contribution to the
colonial economy. Although the small Indian community had little
political voice, its position as a regular petty commercial element
in the country is also considered. Crucially, this history
incorporates the political, social and economic impact of
colonialism on the African population, including the shock of the
First World War. David Thompson is an amateur historian whose first
and probably only book this is. His career at GCHQ spanned 38
years, with a late year attached to the Ministry of Defence. He
lives in Cheltenham.

Railways are an environmentally friendly means of transport well
suited to modern society. However, noise and vibration are key
obstacles to further development of the railway networks for
high-speed intercity traffic, for freight and for suburban metros
and light-rail. All too often noise problems are dealt with
inefficiently due to lack of understanding of the problem.
This book brings together coverage of the theory of railway noise
and vibration with practical applications of noise control
technology at source to solve noise and vibration problems from
railways. Each source of noise and vibration is described in a
systematic way: rolling noise, curve squeal, bridge noise,
aerodynamic noise, ground vibration and ground-borne noise, and
vehicle interior noise.
Theoretical modelling approaches are introduced for each source in
a tutorial fashion
Practical applications of noise control technology are presented
using the theoretical models
Extensive examples of application to noise reduction techniques
are included
Railway Noise and Vibration is a hard-working reference and will be
invaluable to all who have to deal with noise and vibration from
railways, whether working in the industry or in consultancy or
academic research.
David Thompson is Professor of Railway Noise and Vibration at the
Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, University of
Southampton. He has worked in the field of railway noise since
1980, with British Rail Research in Derby, UK, and TNO Institute of
Applied Physics in the Netherlands before moving to Southampton in
1996. He was responsible for developing the TWINS software for
predicting rolling noise.
* Discusses fully the theoretical background and practical workings
of railway noise
* Includes the latest research findings, brought together in one
place
* Forms an extended case study in the application of noise control
techniques"

This book contains the presentations given during the 9th
International Workshop on Railway Noise (IWRN9) which took place in
Munich/Feldafing, Germany, on 4th to 8th September 2007. This
workshop was organised by the Acoustics and Vibration Department of
DB Systemtechnik, the technical engineering office of Deutsche Bahn
AG. More than 120 participants from 17 countries followed the
invitation to the wo- shop. This great response showed the
continuing interest in an important topic of railway technology and
offered the opportunity to present the recent results of intense
worldwide activities to the international community of railway
noise and vibration experts and to share knowledge as well as
experience. Because an efficient transportation network is
indispensable to handle the general mobility increase and road
networks have reached their socio-ecological limits, the railway
network is to be strengthened. For example the European Commission
has given distinct political signals to get more passengers onto
the railways. This policy represents a clear challenge for the next
few decades not only for European railway companies: the
considerable increase in mobility will lead to a doubling of the
railway traffic volume within the next 10 to 20 years. To reduce
the environmental impact, the Directive on the Assessment and M-
agement of Environmental Noise has been put into force in Europe,
aiming at avo- ing, preventing or reducing harmful effects of
environmental noise on human health.
He is clever, excels at rugby and has a fine singing voice. From
Appleby Grammar school he gains a place at University College
London, to study law, shortly after the First World War.
Unexpectedly, Tat mixes with art students from the Slade School,
who introduce him to a world he never knew existed. One of these,
Jane Cranshaw, a beautiful upper class girl, is a medal winning
painting student. Tat secretly carries a torch for her. Eventually,
to his surprise and delight, Jane invites him to spend the weekend
with her at her flat in Fulham, after a heady night of drinking.
They fall in love and seem to be perfectly matched. Tat is unaware
that Jane has a dark side and is on the rebound from a passionate
affair. As a consequence, the apparent innocence of the
relationship between the young couple is fatally overshadowed.
Nothing in Tat's background prepares him for what is to come. Their
seemingly idyllic relationship is torn apart by a succession of
emotional hammer blows, which plunge Tat and his best friend Olly
Sinclair, into a whirlwind of barely controllable turmoil.
Astonishingly, it is his powerful base-baritone singing voice,
which has matured into a true phenomenon, that proves to be his
salvation. Because of this, out of the blue, Tat is offered a
leading role in Verdi's Requiem, to be performed in public, when he
becomes involved with the College Choral Society. He is coached for
the part by the choir master. To his delight members of his family
are able to attend the second of these concerts. Suffused with
pride and exhilaration, he senses that after all, there is hope and
redemption within his grasp.
Pop music, in one form or another, has been with us almost forever.
This book presents 40 of the most important pop rock artists from
the late 1950's to the present. From The Walker brothers to The
Monkees to the Backstreet Boys, history and biographical data of
the artists and their music is all here, complete with pictures.

The book reports on the 11th International Workshop on Railway
Noise, held on 9 - 13 September, 2013, in Uddevalla, Sweden. The
event, which was jointly organized by the Competence Centre
Chalmers Railway Mechanics (CHARMEC) and the Departments of Applied
Mechanics and Applied Acoustics at Chalmers University of
Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden, covered a broad range of topics
in the field of railway noise and vibration, including: prospects,
legal regulations and perceptions; wheel and rail noise;
prediction, measurements and monitoring; ground-borne vibration;
squeal noise and structure-borne noise; and aerodynamic noise
generated by high-speed trains. Further topics included: resilient
track forms; grinding, corrugation and roughness; and interior
noise and sound barriers. This book, which consists of a collection
of peer-reviewed papers originally submitted to the workshop, not
only provides readers with an overview of the latest developments
in the field, but also offers scientists and engineers essential
support in their daily efforts to identify, understand and solve a
number of problems related to railway noise and vibration, and to
achieve their ultimate goal of reducing the environmental impact of
railway systems.
Railway Noise and Vibration, Second Edition provides a complete
overview of the state-of-the-art in rail noise and vibration theory
and modeling. The book describes each source of noise and vibration
such as rolling noise, curve squeal, bridge noise, aerodynamic
noise, ground vibration and ground-borne noise, and vehicle
interior noise in a systematic way, covering relevant theoretical
modelling approaches and their practical applications, with
extensive examples of noise control technology applied at
source.Noise and vibration are key obstacles to further development
of railway networks worldwide for high-speed intercity traffic, for
freight and for suburban metros and light-rail. With noise problems
all too often dealt with inefficiently due to lack of understanding
of the problem, this new edition is an invaluable reference for all
those working with noise and vibration from railways, whether in
industry, consultancy or academic research.

The British Museum watch collection is unsurpassed anywhere in the
world, and tells the story of the watch which spans an incredible
500 years. Within the collection are examples ranging from
sixteenth-century early stack freed watches made in south Germany
to exquisite decorative watches of the seventeenth century.
Everyday watches from the eighteenth century and precision-made
chronometers from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries are
included, as are examples from the modern era. All the major makers
of Europe and America will be represented, including Thomas
Tompion, whose reputation stretched far and wide even in his own
time, and the Swiss-born Abraham Louis Breguet, who lived and
worked in Paris supplying the best that money could buy to the
crown heads and aristocratic families of the western world. In
contrast to the high precision of the horological giants, the
Museum has a growing collection of wristwatches, including those
with automatic winding systems. There are also extensive
collections of pin-pallet lever watches made for the mass market
during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries by companies such as
Waterbury and Ingersoll. The collections are brought up to the
minute with the inclusion of early examples of electro-mechanical
watches and the quartz revolution.
