Developing Public Service Leaders examines why and how governments and representative bodies in public service organizations have mounted major interventions over the last two decades to develop senior staff as leaders. A critical explanation is developed of the foundational contribution made by national leadership development interventions in the 2000s to the emergence, proliferation, and normalization of leadership development provision. Through carrying out qualitative research in England, the authors investigate the national leadership development interventions for school education, healthcare, and higher education. Whilst also looking at the contemporary legacy of these interventions within a global scale, examining the growing international movement and comparing interventions across the world. The book looks at new ways to approach leadership development, adopting a novel perspective on leadership as a metaphorical concept and coining the concept of 'leaderism', and exploring how although senior staff may be widely acculturated as leaders, they may not necessarily be committed to acting as government change agents. Leadership development makes a diffuse contribution towards the ongoing neoliberalization of public services. Developing Public Service Leaders is a comprehensive and essential read for a researcher or policymaker striving for an in-depth understanding of the field and its ramifications.
Epidemiology is an essential discipline which influences many aspects of clinical practice for doctors, dentists, and other health practitioners. Epidemiology and Disease Prevention, Second Edition, introduces and develops the core principles and practices of epidemiology over three parts: methods of epidemiological enquiry, systems-based epidemiology, and the application of epidemiological findings in clinical and public health practice. This student-friendly textbook guides the reader through the content with the help of illustrations and key points in boxes that highlight need-to-know information. Each chapter references up-to-date and landmark work in the field, while lists of further reading direct the reader to the best sources of information for their own work. Case studies help students to relate epidemiological theory and data to every day clinical practice and public health campaigns. Furthermore, a comprehensive glossary and practice questions with model answers act as an excellent revision resource. The second edition of Epidemiology and Disease Prevention now includes over 100 illustrations and an updated chapter list, including a brand new chapter on global public health in the 21st century. Authored and edited by experts from across the world, this is a truly modern approach to epidemiology for students studying medicine, dentistry, and other health-related sciences.
Progress made with children with conduct disorder in specialist schools often does not transfer to the home, but this book shows how behavioural parent training and applied behaviour analysis can help professionals work with parents to continue improving their child's behaviour. Conduct Disorder and Behavioural Parent Training provides a comprehensive introduction to the field of conduct disorder and the individual, familial and social factors that influence the development of persistent antisocial behaviour. The author presents thorough evidence for the effectiveness of the following aspects of behavioural parent training: * compliance training * encouraging good behaviour through praise, enthusiasm and attention * using `time out' as an effective punishment technique * transfer of improvements to school setting * effects of treatment on the child's siblings. He considers the relative impact and costs of different settings for parent training, and outlines ethical issues and future directions for research in this area. This book is essential reading for all professionals involved in the care of children with conduct disorder, as well as psychology and social work students and academics.
