Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.
Briggens House, near Harlow in Essex, was one of the most important
of the establishments requisitioned by the Special Operations
Executive (SOE) during the Second World War. Its mission was to
accomplish Winston Churchill's directive to 'set Europe ablaze',
and, initially, the house was used as a finishing school for the
Cichociemni, elite Polish saboteurs, to prepare to parachute into
Nazi-occupied Poland. In need of false identity documents to avoid
the arrest, interrogation and execution of its agents, SOE
gradually built up a printing department on site and Station 14
became the organisation's False Document Section. This is the true
story of the house and its highly skilled wartime personnel,
including British officers, Polish agents and the women of the
First Aid Nursing Yeomanry. For the resident staff it was a
relatively safe posting, but tension built as the Poles, fighting
their own battle for Polish independence, competed for scarce
resources in wartime Britain. SOE historian Des Turner uses
first-hand accounts, memoirs and official records to reveal
long-forgotten stories of tragedy, humour and frustration, giving
long-overdue credit to the men and women of Briggens House who were
prevented by the Secrets Act from ever speaking about their wartime
work.
The full story of Aston House in the Second World War has never
been told before. Its activities were top secret and as important
to the Allied war effort as those of Bletchley Park, but in a
different way. Situated near Stevenage, Aston House was one of many
British country houses requisitioned during the Second World War by
the Special Operations Executive (SOE). Born out of Bletchley Park,
where it began life as SIS Section 'D' (for Destruction), Station
12's scientific and military personnel invented, made and supplied
'toys' for the Commandos, Special Boat Service, SAS, and resistance
groups. Included in their deadly arsenal of weapons were plastic
explosives, limpet mines, pressure switches, tree spigots,
incendiary bombs, incendiary liquids and arrows, and a variety of
time fuses. They worked on the tools for famous operations, such as
the St Nazaire and Dieppe Raids, and the assassination of Himmler's
deputy in Prague. Also revealed are the human stories of personnel
stationed in this extremely remote village and the explosive pranks
they played on each other, and certain visitors, which add some
light relief to their destructive purpose.

Clorinda Matto de Turner was the first Peruvian novelist to command
an international reputation and the first to dramatize the
exploitation of indigenous Latin American people. She believed the
task of the novel was to be the photograph that captures the vices
and virtues of a people, censuring the former with the appropriate
moral lesson and paying its homage of admiration to the
latter.
In this tragic tale, Clorinda Matto de Turner explores the
relationship between the landed gentry and the indigenous peoples
of the Andean mountain communities. While unfolding as a love story
rife with secrets and dashed hopes, Torn from the Nest in fact
reveals a deep and destructive class disparity, and criticizes the
Catholic clergy for blatant corruption. When Lucia and Don Fernando
Marin settle in the small hamlet of Killac, the young couple become
advocates for the local Indians who are being exploited and
oppressed by their priest and governor and by the gentry allied
with these two. Considered meddling outsiders, the couple meet
violent resistance from the village leaders, who orchestrate an
assault on their house and pursue devious and unfair schemes to
keep the Indians subjugated. As a romance blossoms between the a
member of the gentry and the peasant girl that Lucia and Don
Fernando have adopted, a dreadful secret prevents their marriage
and brings to a climax the novel's exposure of degradation: they
share the same father--a parish priest.
Torn from the Nest was first published in Peru in 1889 amidst much
enthusiasm and outrage. This fresh translation--the first since
1904--preserves one of Peru's most distinctive and compelling
voices.
