In "Liberty Porter First Daughter," eight-year-old Liberty Porter's
father has just been elected President of the United States--and
she's the new First Daughter! As Liberty moves into the White
House, she vows to make herself indispensable to her country--but
can she get past her run-ins with the Chief of Staff?
These proceedings presents the state-of-the-art in spoken dialog
systems with applications in robotics, knowledge access and
communication. It addresses specifically: 1. Dialog for interacting
with smartphones; 2. Dialog for Open Domain knowledge access; 3.
Dialog for robot interaction; 4. Mediated dialog (including
crosslingual dialog involving Speech Translation); and,5. Dialog
quality evaluation. These articles were presented at the IWSDS 2012
workshop.
Since 2004, the Baby Doll Mardi Gras tradition in New Orleans has
gone from an obscure, almost forgotten practice to a flourishing
cultural force. The original Baby Dolls were groups of black women,
and some men, in the early Jim Crow era who adopted New Orleans
street masking tradition as a unique form of fun and
self-expression against a backdrop of racial discrimination.
Wearing short dresses, bloomers, bonnets, and garters with money
tucked tight, they strutted, sang ribald songs, chanted, and danced
on Mardi Gras Day and on St. Joseph feast night. Today's Baby Dolls
continue the tradition of one of the first street women's masking
and marching groups in the United States. They joyfully and
unabashedly defy gender roles, claiming public space and
proclaiming through their performance their right to social
citizenship. Essayists draw on interviews, theoretical
perspectives, archival material, and historical assessments to
describe women's cultural performances that take place on the
streets of New Orleans. They recount the history and contemporary
resurgence of the Baby Dolls while delving into the larger cultural
meaning of the phenomenon. Over 140 color photographs and personal
narratives of immersive experiences provide passionate testimony of
the impact of the Baby Dolls on their audiences. Fifteen artists
offer statements regarding their work documenting and inspired by
the tradition as it stimulates their imagination to present a
practice that revitalizes the spirit.
The book presents a snapshot of the state-of-art in the field of
turbulence modeling and covers the latest developments concerning
direct numerical simulations, large eddy simulations, compressible
turbulence, coherent structures, two-phase flow simulation and
other related topics. It provides readers with a comprehensive
review of both theory and applications, describing in detail the
authors own experimental results. The book is based on the
proceedings of the third Turbulence and Interactions Conference (TI
2012), which was held on June 11-14 in La Saline-les-Bains, La
Reunion, France and includes both keynote lectures and outstanding
contributed papers presented at the conference. This multifaceted
collection, which reflects the conferences emphasis on the
interplay of theory, experiments and computing in the process of
understanding and predicting the physics of complex flows and
solving related engineering problems, offers a practice-oriented
guide for students, researchers and professionals in the field of
computational fluid dynamics, turbulence modeling and related
areas.
"
Mathematical Modeling for Complex Fluids and Flows provides
researchers and engineering practitioners encountering fluid flows
with state-of-the-art knowledge in continuum concepts and
associated fluid dynamics. In doing so it supplies the means to
design mathematical models of these flows that adequately express
the engineering physics involved. It exploits the implicit link
between the turbulent flow of classical Newtonian fluids and the
laminar and turbulent flow of non-Newtonian fluids such as those
required in food processing and polymeric flows.
The book develops a descriptive mathematical model articulated
through continuum mechanics concepts for these non-Newtonian,
viscoelastic fluids and turbulent flows. Each complex fluid and
flow is examined in this continuum context as well as in
combination with the turbulent flow of viscoelastic fluids. Some
details are also explored via kinetic theory, especially
viscoelastic fluids and their treatment with the Boltzmann
equation. Both solution and modeling strategies for turbulent flows
are laid out using continuum concepts, including a description of
constructing polynomial representations and accounting for
non-inertial and curvature effects.
Ranging from fundamental concepts to practical methodology, and
including discussion of emerging technologies, this book is ideal
for those requiring a single-source assessment of current practice
in this intricate yet vital field.
Ecotoxicology Modeling is a comprehensive and well-documented
text providing a collection of computational methods to the
ecotoxicologists primarily interested in the study of the adverse
effects of chemicals, their mechanisms of action and/or their
environmental fate and behavior. Avoiding mathematical jargon, the
book presents numerous case studies to enable the reader to
understand the interest but also the limitations of linear and
nonlinear models in ecotoxicology.
Written by an international team of scientists, Ecotoxicology
Modeling is of primary interest to those whose research or
professional activity is directly concerned with the development
and application of models in ecotoxicology. It is also intended to
provide the graduate and post-graduate students with a clear and
accessible text covering the main types of modeling approaches used
in environmental sciences.

These meetings, held every four years, bring together
researchers from academia and industry and offer a forum for
discussions on the chemistry involved in the preparation of
industrial heterogeneous catalysts. Contributions focus on the
aspects of catalyst preparation. Reports on physico-chemical
characteristics of catalysts and catalytic performances are limited
to correlations with the preparation parameters.
