This volume constitutes the proceedings of the 11th IFIP WG 8.1 Conference on the Practice of Enterprise Modeling held in October/November 12018 in Vienna, Austria. The conference was created by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) Working Group 8.1 to offer a forum for knowledge transfer and experience sharing between the academic and practitioner communities. The 21 full papers and 5 short papers accepted were carefully reviewed and selected from 64 submissions. Following two successful events in Guilin, People's Republic of China (KSEM 2006) and in Melbourne, Australia (KSEM 2007) the third event in this conference series was held for the first time in Europe, namely, in Vienna, Austria. KSEM 2009 aimed to be a communication platform and meeting ground for research on knowledge science, engineering and management, attracting high-quality, state-of-the-art publications from all over the world. It offers an exceptional opportunity for presenting original work, technological advances, practical problems and concerns of the research community. The importance of studying "knowledge" from different viewpoints such as science, engineering and management has been widely acknowledged. The accelerating pace of the "Internet age" challenges organizations to compress communication and innovation cycles to achieve a faster return on investment for knowledge. Thus, next-generation business solutions must be focused on supporting the creation of value by adding knowledge-rich components as an integral part to the work process. Therefore, an integrated approach is needed, which combines issues from a large array of knowledge fields such as science, engineering and management. Based on the reviews by the members of the Program Committee and the additional reviewers, 42 papers were selected for this year's conference. Additionally, two discussion panels dealing with "Knowware: The Third Star after Hardware and Software" and "Required Knowledge for Delivering Services" took place under the auspices of the conference. The papers and the discussions covered a great variety of approaches of knowledge science, management and engineering, thus making KSEM a unique conference.

This volume constitutes the proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Database and Expert Systems Applications (DEXA '94), held in Athens, Greece in September 1994. The 78 papers presented were selected from more than 300 submissions and give a comprehensive view of advanced applications of databases and expert systems. Among the topics covered are object-oriented, temporal, active, geographical, hypermedia and distributed databases, data management, cooperative office applications, object-oriented modelling, industrial applications, conceptual modelling, legal systems, evolving environments, knowledge engineering, information retrieval, advanced querying, medical systems, and CIM.

The Database and Expert Systems Applications - DEXA - conferences are dedi cated to providing an international forum for the presentation of applications in the database and expert systems field, for the exchange of ideas and experiences, and for defining requirements for the future systems in these fields. After the very promising DEXA 90 in Vienna, Austria, we hope to have successfully established wjth this year's DEXA 91 a stage where scientists from diverse fields interested in application-oriented research can present and discuss their work. This year there was a total of more than 250 submitted papers from 28 different countries, in all continents. Only 98 of the papers could be accepted. The collection of papers in these proceedings offers a cross-section of the issues facing the area of databases and expert systems, i.e., topics of basic research interest on one hand and questions occurring when developing applications on the other. Major credit for the success of the conference goes to all of our colleagues who submitted papers for consideration and to those who have organized and chaired the panel sessions. Knowledge-based systems have been successfully developed in practice for a number of years. However, they are often "only" stand-alone systems; integrating them into existing information environments, e.g. making available real production data to an expert system, often either fails or is only solved in a dissatisfying way. Possible reasons for this might be on one hand the lack of know-how about the different features of various experimental AI techniques, and on the other the lack of more classical information and database system technology. The special interest groups "Knowledge Representation" and "Methods for the Development of Information Sys- tems and their Application" of the German Informatics Society (GI) organized a joint workshop in Ulm in March 1990 to discuss the integration of Artificial Intelligence and database technology. This volume contains the proceedings of the workshop.
