A second film version (the first was made in 1930) of Erich Maria Remarque's story about a group of idealistic young Germans recruited to fight on the Western Front in 1914. Amongst their number is the patriotic Paul Baumer (Richard Thomas), whose preconceptions are rapidly shattered upon witnessing the horror of life at the front. Ernest Borgnine, Donald Pleasence and Ian Holm also star.
James Bond (Sean Connery) is sent to Japan to keep the peace between the superpowers when a SPECTRE rocket intercepts an American space capsule carrying a nuclear warhead. In between visits to the geisha house and flights in his Little Nellie, 007 manages to track down SPECTRE's secret base and its evil mastermind Blofeld (Donald Pleasence). Will he be able to stop Blofeld's evil plans or is this really the end of Bond and the world as we know it? After this fifth entry in the series, Connery took a break from the title role, only to return in 'Diamonds Are Forever' (1971).
1960s drama starring Peter Finch as a parliamentary MP whose thirst for greater power leads him into political intrigue. Johnnie Byrne (Finch) is a Labour MP who aspires to the big-time. His hopes are raised when his party triumphs in a general election, but Johnnie is overlooked for a role on the front benches. To top it off, his wife (Rosalie Crutchley) has just left him and balancing two mistresses, including the youthful Pauline (Mary Peach), is proving difficult. When Johnny is approached by a couple of fellow backbenchers for help in a scheme that may destabilise the government but advance their careers, Johnny is faced with an important choice...
