This book seeks to widen perspectives on entrepreneurship by
drawing attention to the diverse and partly new forms of
entrepreneurial practice in Africa since the 1990s. Contrary to
widespread assertions, figures of success have been regularly
observed in Africa since pre-colonial times. The contributions
account for these historical continuities in entrepreneurship, and
identify the specifically new political and economic context within
which individuals currently probe and invent novel forms of
enterprise. Based on ethnographically contextualized life stories
and case studies of female and male entrepreneurs, the volume
offers a vivid and multi-perspectival account of their strategies,
visions and ventures in domains as varied as religious proselytism,
politics, tourism, media, music, prostitution, funeral
organization, and education. African cultural entrepreneurs have a
significant economic impact, attract the attention of large groups
of people, serve as role models for many youths, and contribute to
the formation of new popular cultures.

In recent decades, traditional methods of philology and
intellectual history, applied to the study of Islam and Muslim
societies, have been met with considerable criticism from rising
generations of scholars who have turned to the social sciences,
most notably anthropology and social history, for guidance. This
change has been accompanied by the rise of new fields, studying,
for example, Islam in Europe and Africa, and new topics, such as
the role of gender. This collection surveys these transformations
and others, taking stock of the field and showing new paths
forward.
Islamic Divorce in the 21st Century shows the wide range of Muslim
experiences in marital disputes and in seeking Islamic
divorces. For Muslims, having the ability to divorce in accordance
with Islamic law is of paramount importance. However, Muslim
experiences of divorce practice differ tremendously. The chapters
in this volume discuss Islamic divorce from West Africa to
Southeast Asia, and each story explores aspects of the everyday
realities of disputing and divorcing Muslim couples face in the
twenty-first century. The book’s cross-cultural and comparative
look at Islamic divorce indicates that Muslim divorces are impacted
by global religious discourses on Islamic authority, authenticity,
and gender;Â by global patterns of and approaches to
secularity;Â and by global economic inequalities and attendant
patterns of urbanization and migration. Studying divorce as a mode
of Islamic law in practice shows us that the Islamic legal
tradition is flexible, malleable, and context-dependent.
