Dictionary of Literary and Dramatic Censorship in Tudor and Stuart England (Hardcover): Dorothy Auchter Mays Dictionary of Literary and Dramatic Censorship in Tudor and Stuart England (Hardcover)
Dorothy Auchter Mays
R2,430 Discovery Miles 24 300 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Tudor and Stuart eras have been described as England's golden age, in large part because of the flowering of its literary and dramatic culture. Ironically, repressive government controls over freedom of expression existed side-by-side with some of the greatest literary accomplishments of the age, and many of the same issues we wrestle with today were being hotly debated in Renaissance England. This reference book provides a means for students and scholars to combine the highly popular topics of censorship and Renaissance studies. The 92 entries in this book highlight the major issues which could provoke the wrath of the censor, the ways in which works were modified in response to censorship, and the fate of the authors who roused the censor's ire. Entries are arranged alphabetically by title of the censored work. Each provides basic factual information, including the name of the author, the publication date, the date of censorship, the type of work, and the offending issue; a discussion of the work's historical context; a synopsis of the contents; an examination of how the work was censored; and a brief bibliography. Although there is a wealth of information on censorship in the twentieth century, this is one of the few reference books to address censorship during the Renaissance.

Women in Early America - Struggle, Survival, and Freedom in a New World (Hardcover, Annotated Ed): Dorothy Auchter Mays Women in Early America - Struggle, Survival, and Freedom in a New World (Hardcover, Annotated Ed)
Dorothy Auchter Mays
R3,410 Discovery Miles 34 100 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume fills a gap in traditional women's history books by offering fascinating details of the lives of early American women and showing how these women adapted to the challenges of daily life in the colonies. Women in Early America: Struggle, Survival, and Freedom in a New World provides insight into an era in American history when women had immense responsibilities and unusual freedoms. These women worked in a range of occupations such as tavernkeeping, printing, spiritual leadership, trading, and shopkeeping. Pipe smoking, beer drinking, and premarital sex were widespread. One of every eight people traveling with the British Army during the American Revolution was a woman. The coverage begins with the 1607 settlement at Jamestown and ends with the War of 1812. In addition to the role of Anglo-American women, the experiences of African, French, Dutch, and Native American women are discussed. The issues discussed include how women coped with rural isolation, why they were prone to superstitions, who was likely to give birth out of wedlock, and how they raised large families while coping with immense household responsibilities.

Dictionary of Historical Allusions and Eponyms (Hardcover, New): Dorothy Auchter Mays Dictionary of Historical Allusions and Eponyms (Hardcover, New)

R2,322 Discovery Miles 23 220 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Jezebel is an example of an eponym, a person whose name has evolved into a common noun or verb. In addition to eponyms, the English language is peppered with historical allusions that have become disassociated from their original context. For example, the phrase mad as a hatter refers to the dementia suffered by Victorian hatmakers, who were poisoned by the mercury used in their craft.
