Understanding and measuring the different dimensions of soil health
is key to achieving regenerative agriculture. There has been a
wealth of research on developing better analytical techniques to
measure the biological, physical and chemical properties of soils.
Advances in measuring soil health reviews these developments and
their implications for better management of farm soils. The volume
begins by reviewing advances in measuring soil biological activity
such as earthworms and fungi as indicators of soil health. The
collection also surveys developments in measuring soil physical
properties through advances in visual, imaging and geophysical
techniques, as well as the methods used to measure chemical
properties such as soil organic carbon. It concludes by looking at
how measurement can be translated into farming practice through
soil health indicators and decision support systems. With its
distinguished editor and expert authors, Advances in measuring soil
health will be a standard reference for university and other
researchers in soil and crop science, government and other agencies
responsible for the health of agricultural soils, companies
providing soil monitoring services, and farmers wishing to know
more about the latest developments in soil monitoring.
'White handles hefty quantities of research effortlessly, combining
multiple biographies with a broader overview of the period. His
energetic, anecdote-laden prose will have you hooked all the way
from Orwell to le Carre' Sunday Times, Books of the Year 'Cold
Warriors reads like a thriller . . . ambitious, intelligent,
searching history' The Times In this age of 24-hour news coverage,
where rallying cries are made on Twitter and wars are waged in
cyberspace as much as on the ground, the idea of a novel as a
weapon that can wield any power feels almost preposterous. The Cold
War was a time when destruction was merely the press of a button
away, but when the real battle between East and West was over the
minds and hearts of their people. In this arena the pen really was
mightier than the sword. This is a gripping, richly-populated
history of spies and journalists, protest and propaganda, idealism
and betrayal. And it is the story of how literature changed the
course of the Cold War just as much as how Cold War would change
the course of literature. Using hitherto classified security files
and new archival research White explores the ways in which authors
were harnessed by both East and West to impose maximum damage on
the opposition; how writers played a pivotal role (sometimes
consciously, often not) in the conflict; and how literature became
something that was worth fighting and dying for. With a cast that
includes George Orwell, Arthur Koestler, Graham Greene, Boris
Pasternak, Andrei Sinyavsky, Mary McCarthy and John le Carre, and
taking the reader from Spain to America to England and to Russia,
this is narrative history at its most enthralling and most
pertinent - pertinent because even if on the face of it there is a
huge difference between 140 characters and 100,000 words, at the
heart of both is the power of stories to change the fate of
nations.
At the outbreak of the Second World War Vladimir Nabokov stood on
the brink of losing everything all over again. The reputation he
had built as the pre-eminent Russian novelist in exile was
imperilled. In Nabokov and his Books, Duncan White shows how
Nabokov went to America and not only reinvented himself as an
American writer but also used the success of Lolita to rescue those
Russian books that had been threatened by obscurity. Using
previously unpublished and neglected material, White tells the
story of Nabokov the professional writer and how he sought to
balance his late modernist aesthetics with the demands of a booming
American literary marketplace. As Nabokov's reputation grew so he
took greater and greater control of how his books were produced,
making the material form of the book-including forewords, blurbs,
covers-part of the novel. In his later novels, including Pale Fire,
Ada, and Transparent Things, the idea of the novelist losing
control of his work became the subject of the novels themselves.
These plots were replicated in Nabokov's own biography, as he
discovered his inability to control the forces the market success
of Lolita had unleashed. With new insights into Nabokov's life and
work, this book reconceptualises the way we think about one of the
most important and influential novelists of the twentieth century.
This thesis evaluates the effectiveness of the leadership continuum
curricula by assessing the transfer of classroom learning to
behavior on the job. The study assessed the Chief Petty Officer
(CPO) Leadership course. A pilot study was conducted to evaluate
the effectiveness of the Chief Petty Officers' curriculum. A
Leadership Continuum Survey Questionnaire was developed to
identified and analyze the student's attitudes concerning the
effectiveness of the knowledge and skills taught in the course and
how these variables affected the students' behavior on the job. The
questionnaire was developed using a six-point Likert scale. The
survey assessed the adequacy and usefulness of the competencies
covered in the curriculum. The questionnaire allowed for analysis
and interpretation of participants attitudes regarding the course.
The survey was distributed to 25 CPOs who completed the training
within the past twelve months, 50 percent of the surveys were
returned (N=12). The statistical analysis revealed that the
participants found that the course effectively trained Chief Petty
Officers in leadership skills preparation. The study recommends a
periodic evaluation be conducted to continue the review of the
relationships between the CPO leadership training and performance
using a sample size of at least 60 participants.

This collection of original essays is concerned with one of the
most important writers of the twentieth century: Vladimir Nabokov.
The book features contributions from both well-established and new
scholars, and represents the latest developments in research. The
essays all address the possibility of reading Nabokov's works as
operating between categories of various kinds - whether linguistic,
formal, historical or national. In doing so, they explore exciting
new paradigms for approaching Nabokov's oeuvre. The volume brings
together a diverse range of critical voices from around the world,
to respond to some of the most urgent questions raised about
Nabokov's work. Topics covered include the relationship between his
artistic and scientific work, his influences on contemporary
fiction, and the development of his aesthetics over his career.
Drawing variously on archive research, alternative readings of key
texts, and fresh theoretical approaches, this book injects new
impetus into Nabokov studies as it continues to evolve as a
discipline.
