The Psychology of Judicial Decision Making (Hardcover): David E. Klein, Gregory Mitchell The Psychology of Judicial Decision Making (Hardcover)
David E. Klein, Gregory Mitchell
R2,768 Discovery Miles 27 680 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Over the years, psychologists have devoted uncountable hours to learning how human beings make judgments and decisions. As much progress as scholars have made in explaining what judges do over the past few decades, there remains a certain lack of depth to our understanding. Even where scholars can make consensual and successful predictions of a judge's behavior, they will often disagree sharply about exactly what happens in the judge's mind to generate the predicted result. This volume of essays examines the psychological processes that underlie judicial decision making. The first section of the book takes as its starting point the fact that judges make many of the same judgments and decisions that ordinary people make and considers how our knowledge about judgment and decision-making in general applies to the case of legal judges. In the second section, chapters focus on the specific tasks that judges perform within a unique social setting and examine the expertise and particular modes of reasoning that judges develop to deal with their tasks in this unique setting. Finally, the third section raises questions about whether and how we can evaluate judicial performance, with implications for the possibility of improving judging through the selection and training of judges and structuring of judicial institutions. Together the essays apply a wide range of psychological insights to help us better understand how judges make decisions and to open new avenues of inquiry into the influences on judicial behavior.

The Pacific Symposium on Biocomputing (PSB) 2023 is an international, multidisciplinary conference for the presentation and discussion of current research in the theory and application of computational methods in problems of biological significance. Presentations are rigorously peer reviewed and are published in an archival proceedings volume. PSB 2023 will be held on January 3-7, 2023 in Kohala Coast, Hawaii. Tutorials and workshops will be offered prior to the start of the conference.PSB 2023 will bring together top researchers from the US, the Asian Pacific nations, and around the world to exchange research results and address open issues in all aspects of computational biology. It is a forum for the presentation of work in databases, algorithms, interfaces, visualization, modeling, and other computational methods, as applied to biological problems, with emphasis on applications in data-rich areas of molecular biology. The PSB has been designed to be responsive to the need for critical mass in sub-disciplines within biocomputing. For that reason, it is the only meeting whose sessions are defined dynamically each year in response to specific proposals. PSB sessions are organized by leaders of research in biocomputing's 'hot topics.' In this way, the meeting provides an early forum for serious examination of emerging methods and approaches in this rapidly changing field.

Economic Theories and their Relational Structures - A Model-Theoretic Characterization (Hardcover): E Klein Economic Theories and their Relational Structures - A Model-Theoretic Characterization (Hardcover)
E Klein
R2,882 Discovery Miles 28 820 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

An examination of the foundations of contemporary theoretical economics. Applying concepts from model theory - formal semantics - and standard tools in foundations research the author aims three targets, namely, a characterization of the notion 'empirical economic theory', the determination of the epistemological and methodological status of an important class of 'non-empirical' theories in economics, and the proposal of a taxonomy of economic theories based upon intended epistemological status and the descriptive or operative function of a theory.

The third earl of Shaftesbury was a pivotal figure in eighteenth-century thought and culture. Professor Klein's new study is the first to examine the extensive Shaftesbury manuscripts and offer an interpretation that relates his ideas about philosophy, morals, religion and the arts to his social and political goals. Through politeness, Shaftesbury conceptualized a new kind of public and critical culture, and greatly influenced the philosophical and cultural models associated with the European Enlightenment.

Defining Sport - Conceptions and Borderlines (Hardcover): Shawn E Klein Defining Sport - Conceptions and Borderlines (Hardcover)
Shawn E Klein; Contributions by Shawn E Klein, Dr. Chad Carlson, Francisco Javier Lopez Frias, Kevin Schieman, …
R2,638 Discovery Miles 26 380 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Defining Sport: Conceptions and Borderlines is not about the variations of usage of the term "sport." It is about the concept, the range of activities in the world that we unite into one idea-sport. It is through the project of defining sport that we can come to understand these activities better, how they are similar or different, and how they relate to other human endeavors. This definitional inquiry, and the deeper appreciation and apprehension of sport that follows, is the core of this volume. Part I examines several of the standard and influential approaches to defining sport. Part II uses these approaches to examine various challenging borderline cases. These chapters examine the interplay of the borderline cases with the definition and provide a more thorough and clearer understanding of both the definition and the given cases. This work is not meant to be the definitive or exhaustive account of sport. It is meant to inspire further thought and debate on just what sport is; how it relates to other activities and human endeavors; and what we can learn about ourselves through the study of sport. This book will be of interest to scholars in philosophy of sport, history, communications, sociology, psychology, sports management, cultural studies, and physical education.

Darwinian Evolution and Classical Liberalism - Theories in Tension (Paperback): Stephen C. Dilley Darwinian Evolution and Classical Liberalism - Theories in Tension (Paperback)
Stephen C. Dilley; Contributions by Logan Paul Gage, Bruce L. Gordon, Shawn E Klein, Peter Augustine Lawler, …
R1,330 Discovery Miles 13 300 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Darwinian Evolution and Classical Liberalism canvasses an array of thinkers from the past to the present as it examines fundamental political, philosophical, ethical, economic, anthropological, and scientific aspects of the ferment between Darwinian biology and classical liberalism. Early chapters focus on classical thinkers like John Locke and Adam Smith, while later chapters provide analyses of present-day classical liberals, focusing especially on F.A. Hayek, Thomas Sowell, and Larry Arnhart, the most prominent advocates of 'contemporary' classical liberalism. Thematically, the volume falls into three parts. Part I examines foundational matters, arguing that Darwinism and classical liberalism hold incompatible visions of morality, human nature, and individual autonomy. This section also contends that the free market's spontaneous order is fully compatible with a teleological (or non-Darwinian) view of the universe. Part II turns to contemporary applications, contending that Darwinism and classical liberalism are at odds in their views of (or implications about) limited government, vital religion, economic freedom, and the traditional family. This section also argues that, since its inception, Darwinism has attenuated core tenets and values of classical liberalism and Western civilization. Part III of the volume contains alternative views to those in the first two parts, adding critical diversity to the book. Respectively, these chapters hold that Darwinian evolution simply has little to say about classical liberalism; an evolutionary account of human volition is fully compatible with the individual choice presupposed in classical liberalism; and evolutionary naturalism, unlike religious alternatives, provides a strong foundation for freedom, morality, and the traditional family.

Career Readiness and Preparation Criteria in Undergraduate Dance Degree Programs (Paperback): Kathleen E. Klein Career Readiness and Preparation Criteria in Undergraduate Dance Degree Programs (Paperback)
Kathleen E. Klein
R972 Discovery Miles 9 720 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this book, Klein seeks to develop a rubric that can assist colleges, universities, and communities in providing stronger outcomes for students seeking a career path in dance. Beginning with an overview of the historical development of dance and dance education in the United States, this book closely examines the current cultural, educational, and political structures, functions, and mechanisms that influence prevailing public views of this art form in mainstream American life. These views frame fundamental topics for the field of post-secondary dance education regarding curriculum, instruction, and definitions of professional career possibilities. The analysis and interpretation of this research is filtered through a specific lens, with the intention of discovering the effective and ineffective principles and practices within the three examined institutions, which can be applied to developing high success rates of employment among students graduating from future programs. It is further hoped that this study will serve as a catalyst for inter-academic dialogue, in order to strengthen and advocate for the integrity and position of dance education in American colleges and universities.

Evaluating the Impact of Nutrition and Health Programs (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1979): Robert E.... Evaluating the Impact of Nutrition and Health Programs (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1979)
Robert E. Klein
R1,597 Discovery Miles 15 970 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

As is noted in the opening chapter of this volume, nutrition and public health programs have been important throughout Latin America and the Caribbean for many years. This is due to the spe cial concerns of those responsible for setting national policies, the program experience and leadership in public health developed by the national governments, and the stimulus and cooperation of the Pan American Health Organization (PARO), including its twelve associated centers which focus on research, training and program development. The need for a coordinated hemisphere-wide attack on malnu trition and other health problems was expressed clearly in the "Ten Year Health Plan for the Americas" (1). This plan established specific targets for reducing the prevalence of the major nutri tional diseases and other health problems for the decade 1971-1980. It was noted at that time that very few countries had formulated adequate comprehensive national food and nutrition policies and plans, nor had they developed strategies for combating the nutri tional deficiencies known to affect large numbers of people through out the Region. Following a review of the available data on a country by country basis in 1975, the PARO Directing Council en dorsed recommendations for formulating the necessary national poli cies and strategies for the intersectorial execution of food, nutri tion and health programs (2). This report also summarized the available national data related to nutritional status, existing programs such as food fortification, and the human resources avail able for services as well as for research and education."
