Fascism and Neofascism - Critical Writings on the Radical Right in Europe (Hardcover, 2004 ed.): E. Weitz, A Fenner Fascism and Neofascism - Critical Writings on the Radical Right in Europe (Hardcover, 2004 ed.)
E. Weitz, A Fenner
R1,316 R1,096 Discovery Miles 10 960 Save R220 (17%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The dramatic transformations of the the 1990s - the end of the Cold War, the establishment of political liberties and market economies in Eastern Europe, German unification - quickly led commentators to proclaim the end of all ideologies and the complete triumph of liberal capitalism. Just as quickly, however, right-wing extremism began a surge in Europe that has not significantly abated to this day. Fascism and Neofascism is a collection of essays that is distinctive in two important ways. First, unlike most volumes, which cover either historical fascism or the recent radical right, Fascism and Neofascism spans both periods. Secondly, this volume also aims to bring newer modes of inquiry, rooted in cultural studies, into dialogue with more 'traditional' ways of viewing fascism. The editors' approach is deliberately interdisciplinary, even eclectic.

Statistics for Microarrays - Design, Analysis and Inference (Hardcover, New): E Wit Statistics for Microarrays - Design, Analysis and Inference (Hardcover, New)
E Wit
R2,782 Discovery Miles 27 820 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Interest in microarrays has increased considerably in the last ten years. This increase in the use of microarray technology has led to the need for good standards of microarray experimental notation, data representation, and the introduction of standard experimental controls, as well as standard data normalization and analysis techniques. "Statistics for Microarrays: Design, Analysis and Inference" is the first book that presents a coherent and systematic overview of statistical methods in all stages in the process of analysing microarray data - from getting good data to obtaining meaningful results.Provides an overview of statistics for microarrays, including experimental design, data preparation, image analysis, normalization, quality control, and statistical inference.Features many examples throughout using real data from microarray experiments.Computational techniques are integrated into the text.Takes a very practical approach, suitable for statistically-minded biologists.Supported by a Website featuring colour images, software, and data sets.

Primarily aimed at statistically-minded biologists, bioinformaticians, biostatisticians, and computer scientists working with microarray data, the book is also suitable for postgraduate students of bioinformatics.

This book is an introduction to modern cardinal arithmetic, developed in the frame of the axioms of Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory together with the axiom of choice. It splits into three parts. Part one, which is contained in Chapter 1, describes the classical cardinal arithmetic due to Bernstein, Cantor, Hausdorff, Konig, and Tarski. The results were found in the years between 1870 and 1930. Part two, which is Chapter 2, characterizes the development of cardinal arith metic in the seventies, which was led by Galvin, Hajnal, and Silver. The third part, contained in Chapters 3 to 9, presents the fundamental investigations in pcf-theory which has been developed by S. Shelah to answer the questions left open in the seventies. All theorems presented in Chapter 3 and Chapters 5 to 9 are due to Shelah, unless otherwise stated. We are greatly indebted to all those set theorists whose work we have tried to expound. Concerning the literature we owe very much to S. Shelah's book [Sh5] and to the article by M. R. Burke and M. Magidor [BM] which also initiated our students' interest for Shelah's pcf-theory.

Between Christ and Caliph - Law, Marriage, and Christian Community in Early Islam (Hardcover): Lev E. Weitz Between Christ and Caliph - Law, Marriage, and Christian Community in Early Islam (Hardcover)
Lev E. Weitz
R1,653 Discovery Miles 16 530 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In the conventional historical narrative, the medieval Middle East was composed of autonomous religious traditions, each with distinct doctrines, rituals, and institutions. Outside the world of theology, however, and beyond the walls of the mosque or the church, the multireligious social order of the medieval Islamic empire was complex and dynamic. Peoples of different faiths—Sunnis, Shiites, Christians, Jews, and others—interacted with each other in city streets, marketplaces, and even shared households, all under the rule of the Islamic caliphate. Laypeople of different confessions marked their religious belonging through fluctuating, sometimes overlapping, social norms and practices. In Between Christ and Caliph, Lev E. Weitz examines the multiconfessional society of early Islam through the lens of shifting marital practices of Syriac Christian communities. In response to the growth of Islamic law and governance in the seventh through tenth centuries, Syriac Christian bishops created new laws to regulate marriage, inheritance, and family life. The bishops banned polygamy, required that Christian marriages be blessed by priests, and restricted marriage between cousins, seeking ultimately to distinguish Christian social patterns from those of Muslims and Jews. Through meticulous research into rarely consulted Syriac and Arabic sources, Weitz traces the ways in which Syriac Christians strove to identify themselves as a community apart while still maintaining a place in the Islamic social order. By binding household life to religious identity, Syriac Christians developed the social distinctions between religious communities that came to define the medieval Islamic Middle East. Ultimately, Between Christ and Caliph argues that interreligious negotiations such as these lie at the heart of the history of the medieval Islamic empire.
