Originally compiled and published in 1922, this volume contains
three studies on Early Greek Thought: E. Hofmann's Qua Ratione; J.
W. Beardslee's Fifth-Century Greek Literature; and O. JOhrens's Die
Fragmente des Anaxagoras.
U.S. Navy Supply Corps Ensign Ross Hofmann had no idea what was in
store for him when he arrived at Cavite Naval Base in October 1941.
Two months later, Japanese forces struck the Philippines,
destroying the base and forcing U.S. personnel to retreat to
Bataan. There, Hofmann participated in salvage missions around
Manila and joined a makeshift unit of airmen and sailors to fight a
Japanese force that landed nearby. In March 1942, he travelled to
Cebu to run supplies through the blockade of Bataan and Corregidor.
Soon after his arrival, the Japanese landed on Cebu, forcing the
Americans to retreat again. Hiking through jungles and crossing
dangerous waters in barely seaworthy craft, Hofmann avoided capture
and reached an American base in Mindanao. He received orders to
establish a seaplane base on Lake Lanao. As Japanese troops landed
nearby, two seaplanes returning from Corregidor stopped to refuel,
one of them hitting a rock on take-off. In a harrowing race against
the enemy advance, Hofmann and others worked feverishly to fix the
plane and escape before the Japanese converged on Lake Lanao.
EJB Reviews 1989 offer the collection of all reviews published in
the European Journal of Biochemistry in one handy volume. This
series of review articles by leading scientists covers emerging and
rapidly growing fields of research in fundamental as well as in
applied areas of biochemistry, such as medicine, biotechnology,
agriculture and nutrition. Novel methodological and technological
approaches which stimulate biochemical research are also included.
All authors review their field in a very critical, selective,
evaluative manner, with emphasis on interdisciplinary aspects
wherever possible.
In the mid-1980s the "European Journal of Biochemistry" set out to
publish review articles. The enterprise proved successful,
resulting in high-level reviews written by well-known scientists
appearing in the "Journal." The reviews represent emerging and
rapidly growing fields of research in fundamental as well as
applied areas of biochemistry, such as medicine, biotechnology,
agriculture and nutrition. Novel methodological and technological
approaches which stimulate biochemical research are also included.
The authors of the reviews are explicitely asked to be critical,
selective, evaluative and interdisciplinary oriented. The reviews
should encourage young scientists to think independently and
creatively, and inform active investigators about the state of the
art in a given field.

Global environmental change (including climate change, biodiversity
loss, changes in hydrological and biogeochemical cycles, and
intensive exploitation of natural resources) is having significant
impacts on the world's oceans. This handbook advances knowledge of
the structure and functioning of marine ecosystems, and their past,
present, and future responses to physical and anthropogenic
forcing. It illustrates how climate and humans impact marine
ecosystems, providing a comprehensive review of the physical and
ecological processes that structure marine ecosystems as well as
the observation, experimentation, and modelling approaches required
for their study. Recognizing the interactive roles played by humans
in using marine resources and in responding to global changes in
marine systems, the book includes chapters on the human dimensions
of marine ecosystem changes and on effective management approaches
in this era of rapid change. A final section reviews the state of
the art in predicting the responses of marine ecosystems to future
global change scenarios with the intention of informing both future
research agendas and marine management policy.
Marine Ecosystems and Global Change provides a detailed synthesis
of the work conducted under the auspices of the Global Ocean
Ecosystems Dynamics (GLOBEC) program. This research spans two
decades, and represents the largest, multi-disciplinary,
international effort focused on understanding the impacts of
external forcing on the structure and dynamics of global marine
ecosystems.

Luftkuhler, Ruckkuhlwerke,
Regional integration and cooperation of Southern African states was
initiated and is furthered with the goal to promote and establish
peace, security and stability in the region. Securing scarce water
and energy resources are amongst the biggest challenges facing
regional and countries' national security today. Socio-economic
dynamics as well as climate change impact the future demand and
availability of natural resources in the region. Discrepancies
between resource supply and demand are potential security threats.
To reach its security objectives, the Southern African Development
Community (SADe practises and facilitates multilateral resource
diplomacy. Trans-boundary water management, regional energy
resource cooperation and the establishment of mechanisms as part of
its overall security architecture are important means to achieve
its goal. After having outlined the necessity for multilateral
approaches in the area of ensuring security of water and energy
supply, tools of resource diplomacy in the region are discussed.
The book concludes with an assessment of the practiced diplomacy
from a security perspective.
