This book examines the history of translation under European communism, bringing together studies on the Soviet Union, including Russia and Ukraine, Yugoslavia, Hungary, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, and Poland. In any totalitarian regime maintaining control over cultural exchange is strategically important, so studying these regimes from the perspective of translation can provide a unique insight into their history and into the nature of their power. This book is intended as a sister volume to Translation Under Fascism (Palgrave Macmillan, 2010) and adopts a similar approach of using translation as a lens through which to examine history. With a strong interdisciplinary focus, it will appeal to students and scholars of translation studies, translation history, censorship, translation and ideology, and public policy, as well as cultural and literary historians of Eastern Europe, Soviet communism, and the Cold War period.

The present volume is the result of a project which concentrated on a selected subset of linguistic knowledge with the aim of giving a systematic account of the various aspects of structure and process in this subset and the interpretation of these. The subset that for a number of reasons appeared appropriate to this undertaking centres around the dimensional adjectives of German. That the en terprise ultimately produced a less integrated and complete result than expected is due to several reasons. Some of these are of an intrinsic nature, ever present, and not particularly surprising. Some, however, are related to the character of the project itself and are worth commenting upon, as they reflect specific expe riences and difficulties which we encountered during several years of working on the project. We started from the assumption that the dimensional adjectives constitute a sufficiently rich, but nevertheless limited domain of grammatical and concep tual structure which is fairly well understood and explored in relevant aspects. Consequently we expected that summarizing, integrating, and extending the nu merous results that were available should quickly lead to a more complete picture of the interaction of the components involved. However, even had the premise of this assumption been correct, the conclusion turned out to be wrong fairly early in the project. On closer inspection, the investigations of the phenomena were much less complete, the facts agreed upon less systematic, and the proposed anal yses far less convincing than supposed initially."

Metals and alloys rely for their application at high temperature on the formation and retention of oxide scales, which act as a barrier between the metallic substrate and the reactive species in the environment such as 0, S, N, C, Cl, etc. This protection concept requires that the oxide grows slowly, develops a dense, uniform layer, is well adherent, has sufficient ductility to accom modate plastic deformation of the substrate and is resistant to thermal cycling. For many years it has been known that small concentrations of certain "active elements" such as Y and the rare earths, as well as carbon and sulphur, can exercise a significant influence upon the oxidation corrosion behaviour of high temperature metals and alloys. An increasing number of experimental studies on this topic have been published recently. However no generally accepted understanding with regard to the detailed mechanisms and the way in which alloy composition and structure, temperature and environmental conditions, etc., are interacting has yet been achieved, although many - often controversial - theories and ideas have been presented. It therefore seemed to be an appropriate time to bring together a group of experts to review and evaluate the current state-of-the-art and to discuss various aspects of this important topic."

In conjunction with the Twelfth International Congress of Gerontology, the Carl-Korth Institute for Cardiovascular Research organized an international symposium on "Beta Blockers in the Elderly." It was the intention of the Scientific Committee that during this symposium we would discuss the specific problems and therapeutic implications arising when elderly people have to be treated with beta-blocking agents. Special emphasis was placed on the side effects and the age dependent features of beta-blocker therapy. Beta-blockers have become established in the treatment of both cardiovascular diseases and neuropsychiatric disorders. Their effectiveness in patients suffering from coronary heart disease, hypertension, and hyperkinetic cardiac syndromes has long been proven. The development of new, selectively active beta-blockers has substantially reduced the number of possible side effects, thus enhancing therapeutic safety. Because side effects cannot be eliminated, however, beta blockers have been introduced only hesitantly into treatment of the elderly. This book is the first wide-ranging survey of the use of beta blockers in elderly patients. The articles contained herei- written by pharmacologists, cardiologists, sports physicians, neurologists, psychiatrists, and ophthalmologists - show that advanced age alone does not contraindicate the use of beta-blockers and sympatholytic substances. Also provided are guidelines for examination and determination of in dications in the elderly. Efficient and effective transportation networks are backbones to modern societies. Methodologically, their design has mainly been driven by optimization approaches oftentimes with a strong cost focus. Their strategic planning, however, should go beyond detailed cost analysis and identify other key decision drivers. Transportation network centrality describes the appearance of a network; hence is crucial for network design. Anne Paul develops a strategic approach to transportation network design by conceptualizing transportation network centrality and relating it to the performance and quality of transportation networks. Die photodynamische Therapie (PDT) ist seit acht Jahren in der Augenheilkunde etabliert. Sie ist zugelassen f r Patienten mit exsudativer altersbezogener Makuladegeneration mit vorwiegend klassischen subfovealen choroidalen Neovaskularisationen (CNV) und f r Patienten mit subfovealen CNV infolge pathologischer Myopie. Spezielle Indikationen und Techniken der Behandlung seltenerer okul rer Erkrankungen werden dargestellt, bei denen die PDT eine sinnvolle und vielversprechende Therapieoption mit geringer Komplikationsrate darstellt. Diese sind idiopathische CNV, sekund re CNV bei entz ndlichen Erkrankungen, choroidale H mangiome, okul re Tumore, Chorioretinopathia centralis serosa und Erkrankungen im Kindesalter.

Der hiermit vorliegende Band 8 der Buchreihe "Halbleiter-Elektronik" mit dem Titel "Signalverarbeitende Dioden" solI der Verkntipfung zwischen physikali- scher Wirkungsweise dieser Diodenart und ihrer elektrotechnischen Zielsetzung dienen. Aus der Obersicht tiber die Konzeption dieser Buchreihe auf der dritten Umschlagseite geht hervor, daB diesem Band flinf Grundlagenbande vorange- gangen sind. Deshalb konnen sich die Autoren ohne Umschweife den speziellen Problem en der nachfolgend genannten Dioden widmen: PIN-Diode, Speicher- varaktor, Sperrschichtvaraktor, MIS-Varaktor, Schottky-Diode, Zener-und La- winendiode (Z-Dioden). Obwohl bei allgemeinen physikalischen Problemen auf die Grundlagenbande verwiesen wird, ist darauf geachtet worden, daB dieses Buch als Einzeldarstellung lesbar bleibt. Bei jeder aufgeflihrten Diodenart wird der spezielle Wirkungsmechanismus herausgestellt, so daB nicht nur eine Anwendung dargestellt, sondern ein physi- kalischer Effekt erlautert wird. In der Einflihrung sind entsprechende Hinweise enthalten. Dieser Band kann also, trotz der speziellen Diodenarten, die beschrie- ben werden, auch als Halbleiter-Lehrbuch gelten, da die Darstellung mit den Phanomenen der Transportphysik erlautert wird. Beim "Device-Modelling" kann man deshalb auf die geschilderten Zusammenhlinge zuruckgreifen. Ins- gesamt wird die Physik des pn-Oberganges behandelt, seine vielfaltigen Mog- lichkeiten werden im einzelnen geschildert. Dabei wird nattirlich die schaltungs- technische Umgebung, soweit es flir das Diodenverstandnis erforderlich ist, mit- berucksichtigt.

Dass die Alterskardiologie zum zentralen Thema der 3. Bischofsgru ner Kardiologengesprache gewahlt wurde, hat seine besondere Be wandtnis. Seit Mitte des letzten Jahres stehen die Bundesrepublik Deutschland und Europa fur 12 Monate unter dem Zeichen des al ternden Menschen und damit der Gerontologie: In der Zeit vom 12. bis 17. Juli 1981 fand der Internationale Gerontologenkongress zum ersten Mal auf deutschem Boden, namlich in Hamburg, statt. Satelliten-Symposien mit gerontologischen Themen in Koln, Mun chen, Erlangen, Bremen, Amsterdam und Bratislava schlossen sich unmittelbar an. Im Herbst des Jahres 1981 erorterte das Internatio nale Institut fur soziale Gerontologie in Genfin einer Klausurtagung die gesundheitspolitischen Probleme des alteren Menschen in aller Welt. Fur April dieses Jahres hat der Prasident der Vereinigten Staa ten die Vorsitzenden der europaischen gerontologischen Gesell schaften nach Washington zur White House Conference gebeten, um dort in verschiedenen Expertengremien die Tagesordnung vor zubereiten, die im Juli 1982 auf der UNO-Weltkonferenz fur die alte re Generation in Wien behandelt werden soll. Es ist deshalb unsere Uberzeugung, dass die Bischofsgruner Kardiologengesprache zwar auf einem sehr speziellen und beschrankten Gebiet, doch auf einem um so wichtigeren - wie die Altersstatistik der Herz-Kreislauferkran kungen zeigt - ihren Beitrag dazu leisten sollten und konnen."

Das Anliegen dieses Blichleins, das im wesentlichen die Referate der 2. Bischofsgruner Kardiologengesprache zu sammenfaBt, zielt weniger darauf ab, wesentliche Sach verhalte zu einem Krankheitsbild zu besprechen, son dem vielmehr, das Wissen liber ein praktisch relevantes Thema der klinischen Kardiologie zu vertiefen und kontro verse Meinungen auch interdisziplinar, d.h. mit dem Neu rologen und Psychiater, zu diskutieren. Dies geschieht zu mindest dort, wo es zu Beruhrungspunkten oder Uber schneidungen der fachlichen Kompetenzen kommt. Wir erleben es immer wieder, daB auf Tagungen von Standesorganisationen die klare Abgrenzung der Zu standigkeit gefordert wird, nicht berucksichtigend, daB der Arzt in der Praxis, aber auch in der Klinik - ich denke an den Assistenten im Bereitschaftsdienst - im mer wieder vor Fragen gestellt wird, die hier und jetzt zur Entscheidung anstehen, ohne sich den absichemden Rat des Spezialisten einholen zu konnen. Ich meine da her, daB die Diskussion liber dieses Thema gerade hier ihren Beitrag leisten kann; zumal sie auch durch die Er weiterung unserer Kenntnisse und die Vertiefung unse res Wissens hilft, Verantwortung zu libemehmen in ei ner Zeit, in der der Druck der Verantwortlichkeit zu mindest unbequem geworden ist. Das Gesprach und die Diskussion werden durch zwei Grundlagenvortrage aus der Sicht des Kardiologen so wie aus der Sicht des Neuropsychiaters eingeleitet."
