Spatial Flood Risk Management - Implementing Catchment-based Retention and Resilience on Private Land (Hardcover): Thomas... Spatial Flood Risk Management - Implementing Catchment-based Retention and Resilience on Private Land (Hardcover)
Thomas Hartmann, Lenka Slavikova, Mark E. Wilkinson
R2,681 Discovery Miles 26 810 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is an open access title available under the terms of a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 License. It is free to read, download and share at Elgaronline. Centralizing the role of land and landowners, Spatial Flood Risk Management brings together knowledge from socio-economy, public policy, hydrology, geomorphology, and engineering to establish an interdisciplinary knowledge base on spatial approaches to managing flood risks. Discussing key barriers and sharing evidence-based best practices to flood risk management, international contributors involved in the LAND4FLOOD EU COST Action initiative (CA16209) seek transferrable solutions to the implementation challenges of nature-based solutions. Introducing the concept of spatial flood risk management, the multi-national teams of authors consider the notion of land through three analytical lenses: as a biophysical system, a socio-economic resource, and a solution to flood-risk management. Advocating for a more comprehensive approach, the book explores options of where and how to store water within catchments, including decentralized water retention in the hinterland, flood storage along rivers, and planned flooding in resilient cities. Bringing together the existing knowledge on the relation between flood risk management and land with an international and interdisciplinary scope, this book will prove invaluable to academics, policy makers and public authorities involved in flood risk management, urban planners, and governing environmental bodies.

THE book for elementary education mathematics content courses! Designed to help prospective teachers of elementary school mathematics learn content beyond the rote level, this text stimulates readers to think beyond just getting the problem right and fosters their development into thoughtful, reflective, self-motivated, life-long learners. It stresses the what and why of elementary school mathematics content. Hints are provided about how to teach the content but this is mostly left to courses and texts that are dedicated to that purpose. The text is organized around the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics' Principles and Standards for School Mathematics. The Standards dictate the basic sections of the text. Within each section, appropriate specific topics are developed, intertwined with technology, problem solving, assessment, equity issues, planning, teaching skills, use of manipulatives, sequencing, and much more. In addition, major focal points of the Standards are emphasized throughout: effective teachers of mathematics should be able to motivate all students to learn, should understand the developmental levels of how children learn, should concentrate on what children need to become active participants in the learning environment, and should be engaged in ongoing investigations of new mathematical concepts and teaching strategies. Mathematics Content for Elementary Teachers is based on several fundamental premises: *The focus of mathematics education should be on the process, not the answer. *Elementary teachers should know the mathematics content they are teaching, know more than the content they are teaching, and teach from the overflow of knowledge. *It is important for teachers to be flexible in allowing students to use different procedures--teaching from the "overflow of knowledge" implies knowing how to do a given operation more than one way and being willing to examine many different ways. *Teachers need to learn to carefully cover the topics to be taught, to reflect upon them, and to be able to organize them. To help prospective elementary teachers concentrate on the mathematics content they will be expected to teach and begin to build the foundation for the methods they will use, this text includes only elementary mathematics content and does not address middle school concepts. Pedagogical features: *The text is organized according to NCTM Standards. *An informal writing style speaks directly to readers and is geared to pre-service teachers. *Focus is given to multiple methods of problem solving at four developmental levels. *Questions, exercises, and activities are interspersed throughout each section rather than gathered at the end of each chapter. *Complete solutions for exercises are provided.

Paul Torce, Memoirs Vol. 1: Brexit Opportunities. “There are plenty of opportunities to be had from the Brexit, if you know how to spot them.” Take it from Paul Torce, American Patriot, and Senior Partner in the hugely successful global consulting phenomenon known, to a select and extremely wealthy few, as Morgan-Torce Associates, Paul sees opportunities everywhere. It's the secret of his humungous success. The Brexit was obviously going to have opportunities coming out of its ears. All Paul had to do was to be in exactly the right place at precisely the opportune moment and spot them before anyone else did. This, the first volume of Paul's riveting memoirs, traces some of his movements around London, Brussels, Washington DC and Moscow between June 2016 and September 2017, a period so filled with opportunities he could hardly keep pace with them. From the selection of the new Prime Minister through the negotiating quagmire of the Exit talks to the General Election of June 2017, Paul's influence was both invisible and characteristically decisive. Of course, things don't always go to plan, even if you're Paul Torce. There's his loyal but gaffe-prone business partner, Charles, to contend with; and there are the occasional moments when he feels the political sands shift beneath his feet, and fears he's been hung out to dry. But on the whole, Paul has the Brexit opportunities market pretty well sewn up, subject to one piece of wisdom he acquired during those tumultuous months. The world is an increasingly volatile place, in which nothing can be taken for granted.

Objects of the Past in the Past: Investigating the Significance of Earlier Artefacts in Later Contexts (Paperback): Matthew G.... Objects of the Past in the Past: Investigating the Significance of Earlier Artefacts in Later Contexts (Paperback)

R1,236 Discovery Miles 12 360 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

How did past communities view, understand and communicate their pasts? And how can we, as archaeologists, understand this? In recent years these questions have been approached through studies of the extended occupation and use of landscapes, monuments and artefacts to explore concepts of time and memory. But what of objects that were already old in the past? Interpretations for these items have ranged from the discard of scrap to objects of veneration. Evidence from a range of periods would suggest objects of the past were an important part of many later societies that encountered them, either as heirlooms with remembered histories or rediscovered curiosities from a more distant past. For the first time, this volume brings together a range of case studies in which objects of the past were encountered and reappropriated. It follows a conference session at the Theoretical Archaeological Group in Cardiff 2017, in which historians, archaeologists, heritage professionals and commercial archaeologists gathered to discuss this topic on a broad (pre)historical scale, highlighting similarities and contrast in depositional practices and reactions to relics of the past in different periods. Through case studies spanning the Bronze Age through to the 18th century AD, this volume presents new research demonstrating that the reappropriation of these already old objects was not anomalous, but instead represents a practice that recurs throughout (pre)history.
