In this landmark of Christian mysticism, the revered Carmelite nun
presents moving accounts of her profound religious experiences and
ultimate union with God. St. Teresa wrote this memoir at the behest
of her confessor. It offers a warm, accessible account of her
transformation into an impassioned leader and reformer of church
doctrine.
St. Teresa recounts her childhood and education in
sixteenth-century Spain, her physical afflictions and spiritual
crises, her many visions and mystical encounters, and her
determination to embrace the contemplative life. In describing the
ascent of the soul, she explains the core of her theology as a
four-stage process that progresses from mental prayer to divine
rapture. Next to "Don Quixote, " this timeless work constitutes
Spain's most popular prose classic. It forms an excellent
introduction to the saint's other writings and to the Christian
tradition of mystical literature.
This classic of the interior life and Christian mysticism remains
as fresh and inspiring today as it was 400 years ago. Written by a
prominent 16-century Spanish mystic and Carmelite nun, it forms a
practical guide to prayer that embraces readers with its warmth and
accessibility.
The Ascent Of Mount Carmel is part of four works by John dealing
with the "Dark Night of the Soul," when the individual Soul
undergoes earthly and spiritual privations in search of union with
God. Along with The Dark Night Of The Soul, The Living Flame of
God, and the Spiritual Canticle, The Ascent Of Mount Carmel is
regarded as one of the greatest works of mysticism in Christianity.
In The Ascent Of Mount Carmel St John of the Cross illustrates the
Soul's progress to the summit of the metaphorical Mt Carmel where
God is encountered. The book is divided into three sections and is
presented as a commentary on four poetic stanzas by John on the
subject of the Dark Night. He shows how the Soul sets out to leave
all worldly ties and appetites behind to achieve "nothing less than
transformation in God." Saint John of the Cross was a major figure
of the Counter-Reformation, a Spanish mystic, Catholic saint,
Carmelite friar and priest. He was also a reformer of the Carmelite
Order and is considered, along with Saint Teresa of Avila, as a
founder of the Discalced Carmelites.
One of the most celebrated works on mystical theology in existence, as timely today as when St. Teresa of Avila wrote it centuries ago, this is a treasury of unforgettable maxims on self-knowledge and fulfillment.

"Interior Castle" is one of the most celebrated books on mystical
theology available. It is the most sublime and mature of Teresa of
Avila's works and expresses the full flowering of her deep
experience in guiding souls toward spiritual enlightenment. In
addition to its profound content, it is a treasury of important
maxims on such ascetic subjects as self-knowledge, humility,
detachment and suffering. But above all, this account of a soul's
progress in virtue and grace is the record of a life-of the
interior life of St. Teresa of Avila, whose soul, mind and
temperament hold so deep an attraction for the modern mind. In its
central image, Teresa describes the soul "as a castle made of a
single diamond in which there are many rooms, just as in Heaven
there are many mansions. She describes the various mansions of the
castle, the degrees of purgation and strife, through which the soul
must pass in its quest for perfection before reaching the innermost
chambers, the place of complete transfiguration and communion with
God.
