The book contains a comprehensive account of the structure and classification of Lie groups and finite-dimensional Lie algebras (including semisimple, solvable, and of general type). In particular, a modern approach to the description of automorphisms and gradings of semisimple Lie algebras is given. A special chapter is devoted to models of the exceptional Lie algebras. The book contains many tables and will serve as a reference. At the same time many results are accompanied by short proofs. Onishchik and Vinberg are internationally known specialists in their field and well-known for their monograph "Lie Groups and Algebraic Groups" (Springer-Verlag 1990). This Encyclopaedia volume will be immensely useful to graduate students in differential geometry, algebra and theoretical physics.

Spaces of constant curvature, i.e. Euclidean space, the sphere, and Loba chevskij space, occupy a special place in geometry. They are most accessible to our geometric intuition, making it possible to develop elementary geometry in a way very similar to that used to create the geometry we learned at school. However, since its basic notions can be interpreted in different ways, this geometry can be applied to objects other than the conventional physical space, the original source of our geometric intuition. Euclidean geometry has for a long time been deeply rooted in the human mind. The same is true of spherical geometry, since a sphere can naturally be embedded into a Euclidean space. In celebration of E. B. Dynkin's 70th birthday, this book presents current papers by those who participated in Dynkin's seminar on Lie groups and Lie algebras in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Dynkin had a major influence not only on mathematics, but also on the students who attended his seminar - many of whom are today's leading mathematicians in Russia and in the U.S. Dynkin's contributions to the theory of Lie groups is well known, and the survey paper by Karpelevich, Onishchik, and Vinberg allows readers to gain a deeper understanding of this work.
