This touching autobiography charts the incredible life of a
Yorkshire-born lad whose life story could match any Hollywood
script.Using his childhood talent of motorcycle racing he becomes a
stunt rider performing at many local shows. When World War II
breaks out his skill transfers perfectly to the role of despatch
rider for the Royal Corps of Signals. This eventful journey takes
him all over the world, till he is captured whilst serving in North
Africa and transferred to a prisoner of war camp in Italy. Luckily,
his farming expertise means he is sent to work on local farmland,
which enables his daring escape, aided by the partisans.Despite
living such a spectacular life, Nicholson remains a stoical,
down-to-earth man and tells his story with an openness and
enthusiasm which is heart-warming, and will remind you of the
indomitable spirit which makes Britain great.
The receptor-associated JAK protein kinases and their substrates,
the STAT transcriptional activators, transmit signals following
cytokine and growth factor binding to receptors expressed on the
cell surface, to result in specific transcriptional and cellular
responses. Over the last two decades, the field has progressed from
identification of the individual components through to an
understanding of the activation and deactivation mechanisms, and
the complex structural detail of the proteins involved. We now know
that these pathways are important in many biological processes,
including growth and development, hematopoiesis, and the innate and
adaptive immune response. JAK-STAT Signalling: Methods and
Protocols provides detailed methodologies for examining many
aspects of the pathway. Divided into four sections, topics include
JAK and STAT specific approaches, the negative regulators of the
pathway (SOCS proteins), and the production and crystallization of
JAK and STAT proteins, among others. Written in the successful
Methods in Molecular Biology (TM) series format, chapters include
introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary
materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible
protocols, and notes on troubleshooting and avoiding known
pitfalls. Authoritative and easily accessible, JAK-STAT Signalling:
Methods and Protocols will be of use not only to those working in
the area but also to new investigators who are led to delve into
the complexities of JAK and STAT responses.

A comprehensive review of dryland climates and their relationship
to the physical environment, hydrology, and inhabitants. Chapters
are divided into five major sections on background meteorology and
climatology; the nature of dryland climates in relation to
precipitation and hydrology; the climatology and climate dynamics
of the major dryland regions on each continent; and life and change
in the world's drylands. It includes key topics such as vegetation,
geomorphology, desertification, micro-habitats, and adaptation to
dryland environments. This interdisciplinary volume provides an
extensive review of the primary literature (covering nearly 2000
references) and the conventional and satellite datasets that form
key research tools for dryland climatology. Illustrated with over
300 author photographs, it presents a unique view of dryland
climates for a broad spectrum of researchers, environmental
professionals and advanced students in climatology, meteorology,
geography, environment science, earth system science, ecology,
hydrology and geomorphology.
Was the Beowulf-poet a Christian or was he a noble pagan whose
outlook had been only slightly colored by exposure to Christian
thinking? This is but one of the fascinating topics discussed in
this anthology of criticism on the early medieval masterpiece. The
eighteen contribution to the anthology are arranged chronologically
according to the date of the criticism's first publication. The
outstanding scholars whose critical writing is presented here range
from the turn-of-the-century critic F. A. Blackburn through the
Englishman J. R. R. Tolkien to such contemporaries as Kemp Malone,
Morton Bloomfield, and R. E. Kaske. Nearly every aspect of the
Beowulf is discussed and controverted in terms of literary
analysis. Old English, Old Norse, Latin, and Old French passages
are translated in the accompanying text as an aid to undergraduate
students meeting Beowulf for the first time.

Berthold Auerbach (1812-1882) was a German-Jewish poet and author,
considered the founder of the German "tendency novel," which uses
fiction as a means of influencing the public about social,
political, moral, and religious issues. His novel about the Dutch
philosopher Baruch de Spinoza (1632-1677), chronicles his
development from rabbinical student to one of the great
rationalists of 17th-century philosophy.
