Orson Welles was so keen to make this film that he had to agree to shoot it in 23 days using only existing western movie sets. Macbeth ( Welles), Thane of Cawdor, is told by three witches that he will gain the kingdom. His wife, Lady Macbeth (Jeanette Nolan), urges him to hasten the prophecy with the aid of a knife. The original film was cut from over 110 minutes down to 89 but was restored for release onto video; it also had to be re-dubbed as Welles originally had the actors speaking with broad Scottish accents.
Orson Welles writes, directs and stars in this silent comedy adaptation, his first professional feature. After discovering his wife Clairette (Arlene Francis) has been unfaithful to him Leon Dathis (Edgar Barrier) flees aboard a ship to Cuba in pursuit of her lover Augustus Billings (Joseph Cotten). But when both parties arrive at their destination, Billings, in order to hide from his own wife (Ruth Ford) and mother-in-law (Mary Wickes), adopts the identity of a plantation owner named Johnson.
1940s adventure in which two brothers become rivals when they fall for the same woman. Kamar (Leif Erikson), brother of Haroun al-Rashid (Jon Hall), the Caliph who rules over Baghdad, encounters circus dancer Scheherazade (Maria Montez) and soon falls for her. With a prophecy predicting that Scheherazade will become queen, Kamar attempts to overthrow Haroun and claim the throne for himself. His plot forces the ruler to go on the run and take shelter among the circus troupe. When Haroun meets the dancer for himself the two fall in love. Kamar later shows up to claim Scheherazade's hand in marriage and the situation is further complicated by Grand Vizier Nadan (Edgar Barrier) who has his own plans to usurp the Caliph. The brothers fight for both the throne and the woman they love in a final battle that will determine the victor.
A 17th century man of letters, renowned for the size of his nose but also his wit, falls in love with a beautiful lady but is too afraid of her reaction to his looks to declare his feelings. Jose Ferrer won an Oscar for his performance. The story was remade in France during 1990 starring Gerard Depardieu and also updated to the modern day in 'Roxanne' starring Steve Martin.
