Architecture and Beyond: Procter-Rihl (Paperback, New): Anya Gallaccio, Nigel Coates, Carlos Eduardo Dias Comas, Marcus Field Architecture and Beyond: Procter-Rihl (Paperback, New)
Anya Gallaccio, Nigel Coates, Carlos Eduardo Dias Comas, Marcus Field; Edited by Christopher Procter, …
R619 Discovery Miles 6 190 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Procter-Rihl is a multidisciplinary studio that navigates between the scales of architecture, furniture, product design, exhibition and landscape. In a world dominated by over-specialisation, there are few architects that inhabit these multiple areas consistently through their career. The studio proposes a new approach in architecture, Trans-Local, which brings together the familiar and the extraordinary, the local and the global. Unlike typical contextual approaches to place, this method creates tension between the familiar and the new. Architecture and Beyond surveys the work of the practice, revealing a design method based on linguistics fusing spatial verbs to local archetypes. The projects shown do not follow a chronological order but are clustered by four key design operations: fold, perforate, float and weave. They are firestarters to spatial investigations that are regularly revisited in different scales, programmes or disciplines. The method embraces a diagrammatic purity that is inevitably reflected in the projects. Conditional design methods have been extensively explored by recent parametric and digital architecture delivering complex and extra-ordinary architecture as a non-contextual formal pursuit. What is new in Procter-Rihl's design method is the fusion of an operative system to a symbolic matrix creating an architecture that responds to locality but also is challenging and provocative. This book highlights 42 projects richly illustrated with more than 258 photos and 100 drawings.

Geodesign by Integrating Design and Geospatial Sciences (Hardcover, 2014 ed.): Danbi J. Lee, Eduardo Dias, Henk J. Scholten Geodesign by Integrating Design and Geospatial Sciences (Hardcover, 2014 ed.)
Danbi J. Lee, Eduardo Dias, Henk J. Scholten
R2,941 Discovery Miles 29 410 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In Europe, the emerging discipline of geodesign was earmarked by the first Geodesign Summit held in 2013 at the GeoFort, the Netherlands. Here researchers and practitioners from 28 different countries gathered to exchange ideas on how to merge the spatial sciences and design worlds. This book brings together experiences from this international group of spatial planners, architects, landscape designers, archaeologists, and geospatial scientists to explore the notion of 'Geodesign thinking', whereby spatial technologies (such as integrated 3D modelling, network analysis, visualization tools, and information dashboards) are used to answer 'what if' questions to design alternatives on aspects like urban visibility, flood risks, sustainability, economic development, heritage appreciation and public engagement. The book offers a single source of geodesign theory from a European perspective by first introducing the geodesign framework, then exploring various case studies on solving complex, dynamic, and multi-stakeholder design challenges. This book will appeal to practitioners and researchers alike who are eager to bring design analysis, intelligent planning, and consensus building to a whole new level.

Explore the world of lightning fast Clojure apps with asynchronous channels, logic, reactive programming, and more About This Book * Discover Clojure's features and advantages and use them in your existing projects * Explore lesser-known and more advanced features, constructs, and methodologies such as asynchronous channels, actors, logic programming, and reactive programming * Measure and monitor performance, and understand optimization techniques Who This Book Is For If you're looking to learn more about its core libraries and delve into the Clojure language in detail, then this book is ideal for you. Prior knowledge of the Clojure language is required. What You Will Learn * Understand tools for the Clojure world and how they relate to Java tools and standards (such as Maven) * Write simple multicore programs using Clojure's core concepts, such as atoms, agents, and refs * Get to grips with Clojure's concurrency and state-management primitives in depth * Analyze latency using the Criterium library * Avoid reflection and boxing with type hints * Maximize the impact of parallelization, functional composition, and process transformation by composing reducers and transducers * Modify and add features to the Clojure language using macros * Test your code with unit tests, specs, and type checks to write testable code * Troubleshoot and style your Clojure code to make it more maintainable In Detail Clojure is a general-purpose language from the Lisp family with an emphasis on functional programming. It has some interesting concepts and features such as immutability, gradual typing, thread-safe concurrency primitives, and macro-based metaprogramming, which makes it a great choice to create modern, performant, and scalable applications. This learning path aims at unleashing the true potential of the Clojure language so you can use it in your projects. It begins with installing and setting up the Clojure environment before moving on to explore the language in depth. You'll get acquainted with its various features such as functional programming, concurrency, reducers, transducers, core.async and core.logic, and so on with a great level of detail. Moving on, you'll also learn how to enhance performance using Java interoperability and JVM-specific features from Clojure; you'll even master language features such as asynchronous channels, actors, logic programming, reactive programming, metaprogramming, and so on. This learning path combines some of the best that Packt has to offer in one complete, curated package. It includes content from the following Packt products: * Clojure for Java Developers by Eduardo Diaz * Clojure High Performance Programming, Second Edition by Shantanu Kumar * Mastering Clojure by Akhil Wali Style and approach This is an easy-to-follow, step-by-step guide to start writing Clojure programs, making use of all of its varied features and advantages.

Activators of Information in the Peruvian Rural Andes (Paperback): Antonio Eduardo Diaz Andrade Activators of Information in the Peruvian Rural Andes (Paperback)
Antonio Eduardo Diaz Andrade
R2,070 Discovery Miles 20 700 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Over the last few years, governments and development agencies have provided access to information and communication technology (ICT) with the intention to improve living conditions in underserved communities around the world. Unfortunately, how the ICT tools are used and the information they convey is exploited have not received enough attention. Through a holistic-multiple case study design, this book describes how individuals living in six rural communities in the northern Peruvian Andes use (or not) computers. An interpretive analysis informed by grounded theory reveals the mechanisms by which computer-mediated information is obtained and disseminated by those who use computers. These social actors are named here as 'activators of information' and their role in disseminating fresh and valuable information is thoroughly explained. This book will be a valuable addition to government officials, donors and professionals working in the ICT for development field. Likewise, researchers interested in the application of grounded theory will benefit from the systematic application of the method for the data analysis in an inductive fashion.
