This book presents a new introduction to Hume, guiding the student
through the key concepts of Hume's work by examining the overall
development of his ideas. David Hume is widely regarded as the
greatest English thinker in the history of philosophy. His
contributions to a huge range of philosophical debates are as
important and influential now as they were in the eighteenth
century. Covering all the key concepts of his work, "Starting with
Hume" provides an accessible introduction to the ideas of this
hugely significant thinker. Clearly structured according to Hume's
central ideas, the book leads the reader through a thorough
overview of the development of his thought, resulting in a more
thorough understanding of the roots of his philosophical concerns.
Offering comprehensive coverage of Hume's philosophical method, the
book explores his contributions to philosophy of mind, causation,
the foundation of ethics, natural virtues and philosophy or
religion. Crucially the book introduces the major philosophical
movements and thinkers whose work proved influential in the
development of Hume's thought, including Nicolas Malebranche,
Thomas Hobbes, and John Locke. This is the ideal introduction for
anyone coming to the work of this hugely important thinker for the
first time. "Continuum's Starting with..." series offers clear,
concise and accessible introductions to the key thinkers in
philosophy. The books explore and illuminate the roots of each
philosopher's work and ideas, leading readers to a thorough

from which his or her thought developed. Ideal for first-year
students starting out in philosophy, the series will serve as the

A group of respected historians and authorities reassesses the role
of B. F. Skinner and contemporary behaviorism in the history of
20-century psychology. This landmark collection provides an
interesting mix of modern perspectives to clarify perceptions of
the theories and approaches of Skinner and of other contemporary
behaviorists. This reevaluation of the philosophical bases and
development of behavior analysis offers new interpretations. This
edited volume includes discussion and analyses of Skinner's work
and features a section of integrative commentary on the current
state of affairs in contemporary behavior analytic theory. An
inductive approach is used, and general themes and details about
Skinner and contemporary behaviorism appear and recur with
variations in different chapters. Psychologists, historians,
philosophers, and advanced undergraduate and graduate students will
also find the work important for its up-to-date comprehensive
bibliography of Skinner's published works and for its lengthy
historiography of important studies dealing with Skinner and
behaviorism. This volume is a companion to Modern Perspectives on
John B. Watson and Classical Behaviorism edited by Todd and Morris
and published by Greenwood Press in 1994.
With an introduction by Charlotte R. Brown and William Edward
Morris. David Hume (1711-1776) was the most important philosopher
ever to write in English, as well as a master stylist. This volume
contains his major philosophical works. A Treatise of Human Nature
(1739-1740), published while Hume was still in his twenties,
consists of three books on the understanding, the passions, and
morals. It applies the experimental method of reasoning to human
nature in a revolution that was intended to make Hume the Newton of
the moral sciences. Disappointed with the Treatise's failure to
bring about such a revolution, Hume later recast Book I as An
Enquiry concerning Human Understanding (1751), and Book III as An
Enquiry concerning the Principles of Morals, which he regarded as
'incomparably the best' of all his works. Both Enquiries went
through several editions in his lifetime. Hume's works,
controversial in his day, remain deeply and widely influential in
ours, especially for his contributions to our understanding of the
nature of morality, political and economic theory, philosophy of
religion, and philosophical naturalism. This volume also includes
Hume's anonymous Abstract of Books I and II of the Treatise, and
the short autobiographical essay, 'My Own Life', which he wrote
just before his death.

The 2008 financial collapse, the expansion of corporate and private
wealth, the influence of money in politics-many of Wall Street's
contemporary trends can be traced back to the work of fourteen
critical figures who wrote, and occasionally broke, the rules of
American finance. Edward Morris plots in absorbing detail Wall
Street's transformation from a clubby enclave of financiers to a
symbol of vast economic power. His book begins with J. Pierpont
Morgan, who ruled the American banking system at the turn of the
twentieth century, and ends with Sandy Weill, whose collapsing
Citigroup required the largest taxpayer bailout in history. In
between, Wall Streeters relates the triumphs and missteps of twelve
other financial visionaries. From Charles Merrill, who founded
Merrill Lynch and introduced the small investor to the American
stock market; to Michael Milken, the so-called junk bond king; to
Jack Bogle, whose index funds redefined the mutual fund business;
to Myron Scholes, who laid the groundwork for derivative
securities; and to Benjamin Graham, who wrote the book on
securities analysis. Anyone interested in the modern institution of
American finance will devour this history of some of its most
important players.
