During the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the
American economy moved toward a manufacturing base and mass
production, creating a demand for a literacy that encompassed not
only the traditional alphabetic form of expression but also
scientific and mathematical notation and spatial and graphic
representation. How did the world of learning respond to this
demand? What kinds of educational institutions, teachers,
textbooks, and patterns of instruction emerged? Edward Stevens,
Jr., describes the important technological changes that took place
in antebellum America and the challenges they posed for education.
Investigating the instruction, curricula, and textbooks used in the
common schools, in the mechanics' institutes, and, specifically, at
the Troy Female Seminary and the Rensselaer School in upstate New
York, he demonstrates how advocates of technical literacy attempted
to teach new skills. Stevens shows that the tensions between the
liberal and the vocational, between a culture of print and a
nonverbal culture of experience, persisted in technical education
through the first half of the nineteenth century but were resolved
temporarily by a common moral vision.
The issues may change with the passing of the years, but the
categories of concern change very little: sexuality and the sexes;
medical decision-making; justice for the poor, the powerless, the
underclass; reproductive decision-making; moral decision-making in
business; and personal moral choices. Stevens attempts to present
alternative positions on hotly debated new moral issues from a
different standpoint, using an ethical pluralism approach. In doing
this, he hopes to help readers arrive at their own non-polarized
positions by learning from and respecting all parties in the
discussion.
This book is useful for anyone interested in the basic structural
and functional characteristics of the digestive system and how
these vary among vertebrate groups and species. It discusses all of
the major aspects of nutrition, anatomy and physiology in all of
the major groups of vertebrates. It contains numerous figures and
tables to aid in their comparison, including many illustrations of
gastrointestinal tracts of vertebrates prepared so as to allow for
direct comparison. The terminology of scientific specialties and
sub-specialties is defined and animals are referred to by both
their common and scientific names. Relationships between digestive
strategies and the diet and environment are discussed throughout
the text, and brought together in a chapter on the evolution of the
digestive system. The final chapter offers a brief summary of the
major concepts and suggests future directions for research.
