Place, Setting, Perspective - Narrative Space in the Films of Nanni Moretti (Hardcover): Eleanor Andrews Place, Setting, Perspective - Narrative Space in the Films of Nanni Moretti (Hardcover)
Eleanor Andrews
R2,277 Discovery Miles 22 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Place, Setting, Perspective examines the films of the Italian filmmaker, Nanni Moretti, from a fresh viewpoint, employing the increasingly significant research area of space within a filmic text. The book is conceived with the awareness that space cannot be studied only in aesthetic or narrative terms: social, political, and cultural aspects of narrated spaces are equally important if a thorough appraisal is to be achieved of an oeuvre such as Moretti's, which is profoundly associated with socio-political commentary and analysis. After an exploration of various existing frameworks of narrative space in film, the book offers a particular definition of the term based on the notions of Place, Setting, and Perspective. Place relates to the physical aspect of narrative space and specifically involves cityscapes, landscapes, interiors, and exteriors in the real world. Setting concerns genre characteristics of narrative space, notably its differentiated use in melodrama, detective stories, fantasy narratives, and gender based scenarios. Perspective encompasses the point of view taken optically by the camera which supports the standpoint of Moretti's personal philosophy expressed through the aesthetic aspects which he employs to create narrative space. The study is based on a close textual analysis of Moretti's eleven major feature films to date, using the formal film language of mise-en-scene, cinematography, editing, and sound. The aim is to show how Moretti selects, organizes, constructs, assembles, and manipulates the many elements of narrative space into an entire work of art, to enable meanings and pleasures for the spectator.

Spaces of the Cinematic Home - Behind the Screen Door (Hardcover): Eleanor Andrews, Stella Hockenhull, Fran Pheasant-Kelly Spaces of the Cinematic Home - Behind the Screen Door (Hardcover)
Eleanor Andrews, Stella Hockenhull, Fran Pheasant-Kelly
R4,302 Discovery Miles 43 020 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book examines the ways in which the house appears in films and the modes by which it moves beyond being merely a backdrop for action. Specifically, it explores the ways that domestic spaces carry inherent connotations that filmmakers exploit to enhance meanings and pleasures within film. Rather than simply examining the representation of the house as national symbol, auteur trait, or in terms of genre, contributors study various rooms in the domestic sphere from an assortment of time periods and from a diversity of national cinemas-from interior spaces in ancient Rome to the Chinese kitchen, from the animated house to the metaphor of the armchair in film noir.

Dreamscapes in Italian Cinema (Hardcover): Francesco Pascuzzi, Bryan Cracchiolo Dreamscapes in Italian Cinema (Hardcover)
Francesco Pascuzzi, Bryan Cracchiolo; Contributions by Axel Andersson, Eleanor Andrews, Linda Belau, …
R2,345 Discovery Miles 23 450 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Dreamscapes in Italian Cinema explores different representations of dreams, visions, hallucinations, and hypnagogic states in Italian film culture, covering the works of some of the most significant auteurs in the history of Italian cinema (Fellini, Pasolini, Moretti, Bellocchio, among others). Dreams are discussed both in a filmic context, considering the diegetic and formal techniques employed to construct and represent them, and as allegories or metaphors in a broader cultural, political, and social sense (the film industry itself as the proverbial dream factory, and dreams as hopes, aspirations or altogether parallel universes, for example). The book covers works released over different decades and spanning multiple genres (drama, gothic film, horror, comedy), and it is intended to shed light on a topic that is as suggestive as it is insufficiently studied.
