Flammability has been recognized as an increasingly important
social and scientific problem. Fire statistics in the United States
(Report on the National Commission on Fire Prevention and Control,
"America Burning," 1973) emphasized the vast devastation to life
and property-12,000 lives lost annually due to fire and these
deaths are usually caused by inhaling smoke or toxic gases; 300,000
fire injuries; 11. 4 billion dollars in fire cost of which 2. 7
billion dollars is related to property loss; a billion dollars to
burn injury treatment; and 3. 3 billion dollars in productivity
loss. It is obvious that much human and economic misery can be
attributed to fire situations. In relation to this, polymer
flammability has been recognized as an increasingly important
social and scientific problem. The development of flame-retardant
polymeric materials is a current example where the initiative for
major scientific and technological developments is motivated by
sociological pressure and legisla tion. This is part of the
important trend toward a safer environment and sets a pattern for
future example. Flame retardancy deals with our basic everyday life
situations-housing, work areas, transportation, clothing and so
forth the "macroenvironment" capsule within which "homosapiens"
live. As a result, flame-retardant polymers are now emerging as a
specific class of materials leading to new and diversified
scientific and technological ventures."

This is the second volume of works of Prof. Gennady Efremovich
Zaikov and his colleagues dedicates to 75th anniversary of his
birth. The first volume had the title "Progress in chemistry and
biochemistry. Kinetics, thermodynamics, synthesis, properties and
applications". Reviews and original works are devoted to different
aspects of polymerisation (kinetics and mechanism), to preparation
of nanocomposites on the basis of clays, to studying of their
properties and searches of ways of their applications, oxidising
processes, the new equipments for industrial applications,
investigation of protein reactions, creation of new type of
reactions, bioantioxidants, UV irradiation of biological molecules
(erythrocytes, particularly), NMR- and ESR-spectroscopy,
non-equilibrium phase transitions, chemistry of plastics and
rubbers, photochemical reactions, preparation and characterisation
of catalysts, industrial installations, cement-based polymer
composites, utilisation of waste, diffusion properties,
biodegradable films. Part of the research also deals with
degradation and stabilisation of polymers. It is very important to
prolong the time of reliable exploitation of polymeric products,
but sometimes it is important to accelerate degradation of polymer
(especially after the end of its period of exploitation). The
experts consider that full degradation of one plastic bag will
finish in 400 years (though nobody has witness it) after the
beginning of operation. Aging of polymers depends on their
stabilisation.
The given compilation is devoted to such anniversary of Professor
Gennady E Zaikov. His scientific biography (with social
impregnations) you can read in the first chapter of the given
compilation. The compilation itself has been prepared by those
scientists with whom G E Zaikov worked during more, than half a
century of his scientific career.
The present book is the third book devoted to 75 anniversary of G E
Zaikov's birth and 55 years of his creative activity. This new
volume contains information about the plasticity structural
analysis of polymer nanocomposites, filled by carbon nanotubes,
grafting of some bio-fibres with carboxylic acids under cold plasma
conditions, achievements in textile dyes removal using adsorption,
a reactive medium viscosity change in cross-linking process of
epoxy polymers, the side groups influence on polymers limiting
mechanical characteristics.
This book reviews new information in chemical and biochemical
physics, including research on polymers in polluted atmospheres,
free radical and ion-radical conversions initiated by nitrogen
oxides, selective catalytic oxidation of hydrocarbons, the
mechanism of the ethylbenzene oxidation with dioxygen, catalysed by
cobalt complexes, measurements of the total phenol type antioxidant
content in berry, fruit and vegetable juice mixes, as well as some
applications of nanocarbon materials for novel devices,
functionalisation of some oligomers in the presence of different
catalytic systems and others.
This laboratory manual covers important techniques for polymer
synthesis and characterization, and provides newcomers with a
comprehensive introduction to the basic principles of highlighted
techniques. The reader will benefit from the clear writing style
and straightforward approach to fairly complex ideas. The book also
provides references that the more advanced reader can use to obtain
in-depth explanations of techniques. Polymer Synthesis and
Characterization will serve as a useful resource for industrial
technicians and researchers in polymer chemistry and physics,
material science, and analytical chemistry.
