Before his disappearance from Camelot, Merlin prophesied that the
Round Table would have a successor, an order that would keep
Arthur's ideals alive. His exact words were lost, and through the
centuries, many groups tried to claim that mantle for themselves.
Some are decent. Some are kooks. Some, like Himmler's SS, are evil.
They are all of them deceived. Now, with the SS wielding dark magic
and the courts of Faerie loath to intervene in mortal wars, the
Round Table's true heirs must act to defend Europe's freedom in
ways the Allied forces cannot. When Himmler's warlocks raise a wall
of enchantments to prevent invasion from the West during Hitler's
invasion of Russia, two brothers on opposite sides of the
Atlantic-one a retired lawman, one an American spy-join forces with
an enigmatic double agent and friends both mortal and immortal to
stop the madness before the damage becomes irreparable. And
everyone, even the king of Tir-na-nOg, is in for a surprise. For
the Order of the Silver Star is coming to make Hitler's worst
nightmare come true.

Major Clint Donovan followed his convictions and took a command in
the Union cavalry but lost almost everything he held dearest. His
parents and brother died, and his post-war plans to return to their
ranch outside Independence, Texas, died with them. He and his wife
started over on a homestead near Loyal Valley, and by December of
1869, they are quietly thriving. But thanks to a telegram from his
former commander, Clint's about to find out that his family's "ill
luck" was almost-perfect murder. The mysterious Number Seven wants
the whole of Texas for himself and will stop at nothing to get it.
His wartime bid to take power in Independence failed because, of
all the Donovans, Clint alone survived one of Number Seven's
attacks. Now Number Seven's planning to cause enough chaos by
killing Governor-elect E. J. Davis to seize the state before it can
rejoin the Union. Unaware of this history, Davis asks Clint to work
with three military intelligence officers to stop the assassin
Number Seven's men have hired. Clint agrees, and his wife and
friends offer to help. But one of the intelligence officers
witnessed the murder of Clint's brother, and he fears that if Clint
goes to Austin himself, the assassin targeting Davis will recognize
him. Can Clint's best friend, an engineer blinded by scarlet fever,
find the solution in a failed experiment before disaster strikes
the Donovans again?

An unconventional enemy resorts to unconventional tactics.
Determined to lure Lt. Col. Clint Donovan and his military
intelligence team to their deaths, Number Seven's operatives make a
deal with an Apache warrior whose cruelty is legendary even among
his own people and whose involvement stirs up the torturous ghosts
of Bella Donovan's past. A widowed horse rancher sends Clint timely
warning, but even that can't prevent the Apaches from taking a
neighbor's sons as bait for an ambush, and Clint's informant finds
herself on the wrong end of Number Seven's wrath as a result of her
actions. As Clint's choices set the stage for a cavalryman's finest
hour and a town's hard lesson in courage, the same question arises
time and again: "Is" there such a thing as an innocent bystander?
