The young Simon Potkin and the Knight Sans- Terre did not, on escaping from the watch on Corn Hill, betake themselves, as Whittington apprehended they would do, to the Key, the inn kept by the elder Potkin, but very audaciously, despite their encounter with Sir Robert Percy, pursued their way to the house of his father, the Baron of Risingham. This house was situated near Aldgate, a locality rather in favour at that period with persons of rank. The dwelling of the Baron of Risingham, however, stood in the midst of a garden of considerable ske, which was surrounded by a high wall, with a sort of battlemented gateway ii; front of the house with a little chamber over it, inhabited by the most surly and ill-tempered of porters, a fellow who in the very brutality of his faithfulness was above a bribe. As for any mode of entrance, save by means of the gateway, neither the Baron of Risingham nor his porter thought of, holding that the veriest mountaineer would have been scared by the danger of an attempt to scale that wall. But love, who laughs at locksmiths, laughs also at old barons and grim porters, and high garden walls. It chanced that between the garden wall at the back of the house and a piece of waste ground that lay beyond it was a narrow lane, thickly clustered with the alder trees which were the great growth of the neighbourhood. Clumps of these trees were twisted thickly together against the wall of the Baron of Eisingham's garden, and on the other side of the lane a scanty straggling row of wych-elms reared their grisly half-naked trunks against the moonlight sky.
