Forests need apes as much as the apes need the forests. They are
the gardeners of the forest - keystone species in the ecology of
African and Southeast Asian forests, dispersing seeds, creating
light gaps and pruning branch-tips whilst feeding. Their habitat
comprises two of the planet's three major tropical forest blocks
that are essential for global climate regulation. But the economic
pressures that are destroying ape habitats are much greater than
current available conservation finance. This unique case study from
the Kibale national park illustrates how biological research has
had diverse consequences for conservation. It examines effects on
habitat management, community relations, ecotourism and training.
Lessons learned from this project over the last 20 years will
inspire researchers and conservationists to work together to
promote biodiversity through field projects.
Checklists help us work better. They help us manage complex tasks
more effectively and ensure we apply what we know correctly and
consistently. They've become indispensable for airline pilots and
doctors, but can this low-tech approach to planning and problem
solving demand a place in the teacher's toolkit? Teaching is
complicated, with challenging decisions and important consequences,
but it's in the most complex situations that a straightforward
checklist can be the most useful. Goodwin and Hubbell present 12
daily touchstones-simple and specific things any teacher can do
every day-to keep classroom practice focused on the hallmarks of
effective instruction and in line with three essential imperatives
for teaching: Be demanding: Align teaching with high expectations
for learning. Be supportive: Provide a nurturing learning
environment. Be intentional: Know why you're doing what you're
doing. If there were one thing you could do each day to help one
student succeed, you'd do it, wouldn't you? What about three things
to help three students? What if there were 12 things you could do
every day to help all of your students succeed? There are, and
you'll find them here.

In 2001, Classroom Instruction That Works inspired more than a
million teachers to refine their approach to teaching by asking and
answering these questions: What works in education? How do we know?
How can educational research find its way into the classroom? How
can we apply it to help individual students? This all-new,
completely revised second edition of that classic text pulls from
years of research, practice, and results to reanalyze and
reevaluate the nine instructional strategies that have the most
positive effects on teaching and learning: Setting objectives and
providing feedback. Reinforcing effort and providing recognition.
Cooperative learning. Cues, questions, and advance organizers.
Nonlinguistic representations. Summarizing and note taking.
Assigning homework and providing practice. Identifying similarities
and differences. Generating and testing hypotheses. A new framework
organizes these strategies in preparation for instructional
planning, and it highlights the point that all of the strategies
are effective and should be used to complement one another. Each
teaching strategy is supported with recommended classroom
practices, examples of the strategy in use, tips for teaching, and
information about using the strategy with today's learners. Whether
you are coming to this book for the first time or are a veritable
expert in the nine strategies, this second edition will help you
develop your instructional approach, broaden your influence as a
teacher, and enhance the learning potential of all your students.
We haven't reinvented the wheel. We've taken classroom instruction
that works and made it thrive.

A poetic primer on mothering and motherhood, After Birth is
unflinching in its celebration of new life. Proffering poems that
are both alchemical and personal, Elizabeth Ross taps into the
contradictions of creation -- joy, distress, lassitude -- all while
her speaker tenderly hovers, like Nosferatu, over newborns. After
Birth blood[ies] the word, and marks Elizabeth Ross as a writer to
watch.
When Maude Pichon runs away from provincial Brittany to Paris, her
romantic dreams vanish as quickly as her savings. Desperate for
work, she answers an unusual ad. The Durandeau Agency provides its
clients with a unique service--the beauty foil. Hire a plain friend
and become instantly more attractive.
Monsieur Durandeau has made a fortune from wealthy socialites, and
when the Countess Dubern needs a companion for her headstrong
daughter, Isabelle, Maude is deemed the perfect adornment of
plainness.
Isabelle has no idea her new "friend" is the hired help, and
Maude's very existence among the aristocracy hinges on her keeping
the truth a secret. Yet the more she learns about Isabelle, the
more her loyalty is tested. And the longer her deception continues,
the more she has to lose.
Inspired by a short story written by Emile Zola, "Belle Epoque" is
set at the height of bohemian Paris, when the city was at the peak
of decadence, men and women were at their most beautiful, and
morality was at its most depraved.
