In this classic and timeless story, the great Henry van Dyke sets
forth the ideals of kindness, sympathy, fellowship, and
self-sacrifice that permeate the human soul. In our struggle to
live our lives, "The Mansion" presents a message about the
importance of charity to remind us of the true spirit of giving and
family. "The Mansion" is a "must read" right along with another all
time favorite, Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol."

1917. Burnett, began as a novelist, but she is now best remembered
for her children's books including The Secret Garden and Sara Crewe
(which was later rewritten to become The Little Princess). Her
romance novels were also quite popular during her lifetime. The
book begins: Perhaps the things which happened could only have
happened to me. I do not know. I never heard of things like them
happening to any one else. But I am not sorry they did happen. I am
in secret deeply and strangely glad. I have heard other people say
things-and they were not always sad people, either-which made me
feel that if they knew what I know it would seem to them as though
some awesome, heavy load they had always dragged about with them
fallen from their shoulders. To most people everything is so
uncertain that if they could only see or hear and know something
clear they would drop upon their knees and give thanks. See other

1905. Rebecca Mary took another stitch. Then another. Ninety-seven,
ninety-eight, she counted aloud, her little pointed face gravely
intent. She waited the briefest possible space before she took
ninety-nine. It was getting very close to the Time now. At the
hundred an' oneth, Rebecca Mary whispered. It's almost it. Her
breath came quicker under her tight little dress. Between her thin,
light eyebrows a crease deepened anxiously.
