The thrilling Richard & Judy Book Club Pick for 2018, The Party is a gripping story of betrayal, privilege and hypocrisy, set in the unassailable heart of the British establishment.

Martin Gilmour and Ben Fitzmaurice have been best friends for 25 years, since their days together at Burtonbury School. They are an unlikely pair: the scholarship boy with the wrong accent and clothes, and the dazzlingly popular, wealthy young aristocrat. But Martin knows no one else can understand the bond they share – and no one else could have kept Ben’s secret for over two decades.

At Ben’s 40th birthday party, the cream of the British establishment gathers in a haze of champagne, drugs and glamour. Amid the politicians, the celebrities, the old money and the newly rich, Martin once again feels that pang of not quite belonging. His wife Lucy has her reservations, too. There is something unnerving in the air. But Ben wouldn’t do anything to damage their friendship. Would he?

Social science researchers in the global South, and in South Africa particularly, utilise research methods in innovative ways in order to respond to contexts characterised by diversity, racial and political tensions, socioeconomic disparities and gender inequalities. These methods often remain undocumented – a gap that this book starts to address.

Written by experts from various methodological fields, Transforming Research Methods in the Social Sciences is a comprehensive collation of original essays and cutting-edge research that demonstrates the variety of novel techniques and research methods available to researchers responding to these context-bound issues. It is particularly relevant for study and research in the fields of applied psychology, sociology, ethnography, biography and anthropology. In addition to their unique combination of conceptual and application issues, the chapters also include discussions on ethical considerations relevant to the method in similar global South contexts.

Transforming Research Methods in the Social Sciences has much to offer to researchers, professionals and others involved in social science research both locally and internationally.

Elizabeth Greenwood
R820 R634 Discovery Miles 6 340 Save R186 (23%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A captivating and insightful deep dive into the world of human intuition, exploring the power of this elusive phenomenon and how it can be harnessed to better know and trust ourselves.

We rely on our intuition, even though we don’t fully understand what it is, how it works, or if we can even trust it. In this fresh, mind-opening book, Elizabeth Greenwood takes us on a sweeping investigation into the subject, exploring how, in our data-driven world, we can harness intuition in our day-to-day lives.

Digging deep into her personal experience as well as insights from neuroscience, psychology, , feminist texts, psychics, and everyday people with extraordinary intuitive ability, Greenwood explores what we know about intuition—how to distinguish it from instinct, wishful thinking, anxiety, and denial; how it serves and sometimes fails us; how it impacts our dreams and unconscious behavior; and how it manifests in everything from romantic attraction to premonitions. Greenwood places a special emphasis on “women’s intuition,” and how it has been denigrated throughout history—but can offer us a more hopeful, grounded way of experiencing the world in a time of so much uncertainty.

Everyday Intuition provides practical advice on tapping into our self-knowledge and learning to trust our instincts. It examines the science behind intuition, including how our brains process information, how psychedelic medicine and manifestation are opening new doors of consciousness—as well as how these helpful methods are being abused by charlatans, including some "coaches," "teachers," and social media influencers offering false promises—and how we can train ourselves to be more intuitive and ultimately enhance our daily lives.

Smart, funny, sincere, and profound, this helpful guide is a modern take on one of the oldest tools we possess. It shows us how embracing intuition can lead us to our truest, most mindful selves, and to better align the lives we are living with the lives we desire.

R1,450 Discovery Miles 14 500 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This fully updated edition of Developmental Neuropsychology: A Clinical Approach addresses key issues in child neuropsychology with a unique emphasis on evidence-informed clinical practice rather than research issues. Although research findings are presented, they are described with emphasis on what is relevant for assessment, treatment and management of paediatric conditions. The authors focus on a number of areas. First, the text examines the natural history of childhood central nervous system (CNS) insult, highlighting studies where children have been followed over time to determine the impact of injury on ongoing development. Second, processes of normal and abnormal cerebral and cognitive development are outlined and the concepts of brain plasticity and the impact of early CNS insult discussed. Third, using a number of common childhood CNS disorders as examples, the authors develop a model which describes the complex interaction among biological, psychosocial and cognitive factors in the brain-injured child. Finally, principles of evidence-based assessment, diagnosis and intervention are discussed. The text will be of use on advanced undergraduate courses in developmental neuropsychology, postgraduate clinical training programmes and for professionals working with children in clinical psychology, clinical neuropsychology and educational and rehabilitation contexts. The text is also an important reference for those working in paediatric research.

Elizabeth T Gershoff, Rashmita S. Mistry, Danielle A. Crosby
R2,288 Discovery Miles 22 880 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In the last half century, developmental scientists have become increasingly interested in studying contexts beyond the home environment that contribute to children's growth and development, including physical contexts such as schools and neighborhoods, as well as social contexts such as poverty. During this same period, a number of social trends have significantly impacted children's daily lives, including shifts in gender roles and expectations, the emergence of an early care and education system, and the proliferation of media technology. Societal Contexts of Child Development provides comprehensive literature reviews for six broad contextual influences on children's development that have emerged as key areas of inquiry in contemporary society - gender, child care, culture and ethnicity, poverty, schools and neighborhoods, and media. In the spirit of applied developmental science, this book considers these six contextual domains in a series of two linked chapters written by experts in the interdisciplinary field of developmental science. The first chapter in each section is organized as a review of basic research relevant to a particular context, including a discussion of prominent theoretical and methodological issues. The second chapter in each section then addresses the same context from an applied research perspective, examining and documenting how research has been, can be, or should be used to enhance the everyday lives and developmental outcomes of children and their families through interventions and/or social policies. The book concludes with a chapter specifically dedicated to making connections between research and practice and an epilogue that situates the book's chapters within the field's study of contexts. Societal Contexts of Child Development will appeal to a broad audience of scholars, students, practitioners, and policymakers from the disciplines of psychology, sociology, economics, human development, and public policy.

Constructionalization and Constructional Changes (Hardcover): Elizabeth Closs Traugott, Graeme Trousdale Constructionalization and Constructional Changes (Hardcover)
Elizabeth Closs Traugott, Graeme Trousdale
R4,756 Discovery Miles 47 560 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Elizabeth Closs Traugott and Graeme Trousdale develop an approach to language change based on construction grammar. Construction grammar is a theory of signs construed at the level of the phrase, clause, and complex sentence. Until now it has been mainly synchronic. The authors use it to reconceptualize grammaticalization (the process by which verbs like to have lose semantic content and gain grammatical functions, or word order moves from discourse-prominent to syntax-prominent), and lexicalization (in which idioms become fixed and complex words simplified). Basing their argument on the notions that language is made up of language-specific form-meaning pairings and that there is a gradient between lexical and grammatical constructions, Professor Traugott and Dr Trousdale suggest that language change proceeds by micro-steps that involve closely related changes in syntax, morphology, phonology, semantics, pragmatics, and discourse functions. They illustrate their exposition with numerous English examples drawn from Anglo-Saxon times to the present, many of which they discuss in depth. The book is organized in six chapters. The first outlines the approach and the questions to be addressed. The second reviews usage-based models of language change. The third considers the relation between grammatical constructionalization and grammaticalization. Chapters 4 and 5 focus respectively on lexical constructionalization and the role of context. The final chapter draws the authors' arguments together and outlines prospects for further research. Constructionalization and Constructional Changes propounds and demonstrates a new and productive approach to historical linguistics.

Remarkable advances have occurred since the Series 3 Fascicle published in 1995 with paradigm shifts in every dimension of our understanding of lung tumors including clinical, radiologic, histopathologic, cytopathologic, immunohistochemical, molecular and therapeutic aspects. The molecular revolution leading to effective targeted therapies and breakthroughs in immunotherapy for lung cancer have led to novel approaches incorporating the concept of personalized medicine for patients who historically had little hope. These advances have strengthened the place of pathologists to play a central role in the multidisciplinary team that is now needed to properly diagnose and manage lung cancer patients.

R2,245 Discovery Miles 22 450 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Risk, Resilience, and Positive Youth Development: Developing Effective Community Programs for High-Risk Youth: Lessons from the Denver Bridge Project describes an approach to developing and testing effective community-based programs for at-risk children and youth. This volume shows how elements of risk and resilience, positive youth development, and organizational collaboration are used to develop a comprehensive intervention framework called the Integrated Prevention and Early Intervention (IPEI) Model. The IPEI is then applied to a community-based after-school program called the Bridge Project to illustrate how an integrated intervention framework can be used to prevent childhood and adolescent problems and improve academic achievement. Findings from an evaluation of the Denver Bridge Project intervention components are presented, and recommendations for advancing policy and practice for high-risk youth in community-based programs are described. Readers will follow the planning, development, implementation, evaluation and assessment of the Bridge Project guided by first-person perspectives from program participants who share their stories throughout the book. Risk, Resilience, and Positive Youth Development presents an integrated theory and model for working with at-risk youth, demonstrated in a detailed case example, giving practitioners, administrators, educators, researchers and policymakers a complete package.

Milton & Toleration (Hardcover, New): Sharon Achinstein, Elizabeth Sauer Milton & Toleration (Hardcover, New)
Sharon Achinstein, Elizabeth Sauer
R5,153 Discovery Miles 51 530 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Locating John Milton's works in national and international contexts, and applying a variety of approaches from literary to historical, philosophical, and postcolonial, Milton and Toleration offers a wide-ranging exploration of how Milton's visions of tolerance reveal deeper movements in the history of the imagination. Milton is often enlisted in stories about the rise of toleration: his advocacy of open debate in defending press freedoms, his condemnation of persecution, and his criticism of ecclesiastical and political hierarchies have long been read as milestones on the road to toleration. However, there is also an intolerant Milton, whose defence of religious liberty reached only as far as Protestants. This book of sixteen essays by leading scholars analyses tolerance in Milton's poetry and prose, examining the literary means by which tolerance was questioned, observed, and became an object of meditation. Organized in three parts, 'Revising Whig Accounts, ' 'Philosophical Engagements, ' 'Poetry and Rhetoric, ' the contributors, including leading Milton scholars from the USA, Canada, and the UK, address central toleration issues including heresy, violence, imperialism, republicanism, Catholicism, Islam, church community, liberalism, libertinism, natural law, legal theory, and equity. A pan-European perspective is presented through analysis of Milton's engagement with key figures and radical groups. All of Milton's major works are given an airing, including prose and poetry, and the book suggests that Milton's writings are a significant medium through which to explore the making of modern ideas of tolerance.

Reading Our Lives - The poetics of growing old (Hardcover): William L. Randall, Elizabeth McKim Reading Our Lives - The poetics of growing old (Hardcover)
William L. Randall, Elizabeth McKim
R1,647 Discovery Miles 16 470 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Against the background of Socrates' insight that the unexamined life is not worth living, Reading Our Lives: The Poetics of Growing Old investigates the often overlooked inside dimensions of aging. Despite popular portrayals of mid- and later life as entailing inevitable decline, this book looks at aging as, potentially, a process of poiesis: a creative endeavor of fashioning meaning from the ever-accumulating texts - memories and reflections-that constitute our inner worlds. At its center is the conviction that although we are constantly reading our lives to some degree anyway, doing so in a mindful matter is critical to our development in the second half of life.
Drawing on research in numerous disciplines affected by the so-called narrative turn - including cognitive psychology, neuroscience, and the psychology of aging - authors Randall and McKim articulate a vision of aging that promises to accommodate such time-honored concepts as wisdom and spirituality: one that understands aging as a matter not merely of getting old but of consciously growing old.

S.Elizabeth Bird, Fraser M. Ottanelli
R1,998 Discovery Miles 19 980 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Based on case studies spanning time and geography from the Spanish to the Nigerian civil wars, to government repression in Argentina and genocidal policies in Guatemala and Rwanda and, finally, to forced population removal in Australia and Israel, this collection represents a focused attempt to come to grips with some of the strategies used to publicly engage with traumatic memory work. The various essays offer a kaleidoscopic perspective of new approaches to show how such memory work contributes to transitional justice efforts, demonstrating the complexities of achieving justice and reconciliation through the open expression of shared memories of violence.
