Tele operation systems, in which robots are controlled remotely,
are a potential solution to performing tasks in remote, small, and
hazardous environments. However, there is a big disadvantage to
these systems; as the direct connection between the human and the
environment is lost and operators are deprived of their sense of
touch. The recreation of touch feedback through haptic devices is a
possible solution, however haptic devices are far from perfect and
improving their design is usually a slow trial-and-error process.
This book describes 7 scientific studies that try to break this
slow loop by using a deductive approach. Through investigating
fundamental properties of human haptic perception using
psychophysical paradigms, general knowledge on haptic perception of
force, position, movement and hardness was gained. The resulting
information can be applied to many different haptic devices.
Consequently haptic systems can be more easily designed in an
intuitive, human-centered way.
'This book makes an important contribution to the history of
household labour relations in two contrasting societies. It
deserves a wide readership.' -Anne Booth, SOAS University of
London, UK 'By exploring how colonialism affected women's work in
the Dutch Empire this carefully researched book urges us to rethink
the momentous implications of colonial exploitation on gender roles
both in periphery and metropolis.' -Ulbe Bosma, the Free University
of Amsterdam, the Netherlands 'In this exciting and original book,
Elise van Nederveen Meerkerk exposes how colonial connections
helped determine the status and position of women in both the
Netherlands and Java. The effects of these connections continue to
shape women's lives in both colony and metropole today.' -Jane
Humphries, University of Oxford, UK Recent postcolonial studies
have stressed the importance of the mutual influences of
colonialism on both colony and metropole. This book studies such
colonial entanglements and their effects by focusing on
developments in household labour in the Dutch Empire in the period
1830-1940. The changing role of households', and particularly
women's, economic activities in the Netherlands and Java, one of
the most important Dutch colonies, forms an excellent case study to
help understand the connections and disparities between colony and
metropole. The author contends that colonial entanglements
certainly existed, and influenced developments in women's economic
role to an extent, both in Java and the Netherlands. However,
during the nineteenth century, more and more distinctions in the
visions and policies towards Dutch working class and Javanese
peasant households emerged. Accordingly, a more sophisticated
framework is needed to explain how and why such connections were -
both intentionally and unintentionally - severed over time.

The European Energy Law Reports are an initiative taken by the
organisers of the European Energy Law Seminar which has been
organised on an annual basis since 1989 at Noordwijk aan Zee in the
Netherlands. The aim of this seminar is to present an overview of
the most important legal developments in the field of
International, EU and national energy and climate law. Whereas the
first seminars concentrated on the developments at EC level, which
were the results of the establishment of an Internal Energy Market,
the focus has now gradually switched to the developments at the
national level following the implementation of the EU Directives
with regard to the internal electricity and gas markets. This
approach can also be found in these reports. This volume includes
chapters on ''Newcomers in the Electricity Market: Aggregators and
Storage'', ''Hydropower Concessions in the EU: A Need for
Liberalisation or Privatisation?'', ''Investments and
des-Investments in the Energy Sector'', ''Offshore Decommissioning
in the North Sea'', ''CCS as a Climate Tool: North Sea Practice''
and ''From EU Climate Goals to National Climate Laws''
The essays in this volume aim to explain the evolution and
persistence of various practices of indirect labour recruitment.
Labour intermediation is understood as a global phenomenon, present
for many centuries in most countries of the world and taking on a
wide range of forms: varying from outright trafficking to job
placement in the context of national employment policies. The
contributions cover a broad geographical scope, including case
studies from Africa, Latin America, Southeast Asia and Europe. By
focusing on the actual practices of different types of labour
mediators in various regions of the world during the nineteenth and
twentieth centuries, and by highlighting both the national as well
as the international and translocal contexts of these practices,
this volume intends to further a historically informed global
perspective on the subject.
