Coastal lagoons are fragile ecosystems that account for 13-15 percent of the world's littoral zone. Coastal lagoons constitute an essential environmental reservoir for fluvial sediments due to their capacity to retain them and also the accompanied elemental pollutants. In recent times it has been a common practice to redistribute large amount of coastal sediments for beach nourishment projects to combat shoreline retreat. The problem of beach/shoreline recession/erosion are as a result escalating impacts of emerging global geophysical changes, such as rising sea levels, and coastal development. This book examines the environmental effects of engineered solutions of massive dredge-and-fill methods which have been adopted world-wide in regard to the issue of shoreline erosion.
The Ghana's rocky shore is unique along the Gulf of Guinea from Cote d'Ivoire to western Cameroon (West Africa). This suggests the existence of specific biotopes of species assemblages on spatial scales. The variability of environmental factors has been highlighted as the main causes of variations in the rocky intertidal communities. This book presents species assemblage patterns on spatial scales, test statistical differences in taxa assemblages and model taxon-environment interactions.
