Matronymika, also Benennungen nach der Mutter statt nach dem Vater einschliesslich daraus entstandener Familiennamen, sind, gemessen am europaischen Durchschnitt, uberraschenderweise gerade im jiddischen Sprachbereich ungewoehnlich haufig, obwohl die traditionelle judische Kultur und manchmal speziell das osteuropaische Judentum als patriarchalisch par excellence gelten. Die vorliegende Arbeit verfolgt die raumlich-zeitliche Entfaltung der Matronymika von biblischen Zeiten bis heute, insbesondere auch durch die jiddische Literatur des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts. Sodann unternimmt sie es, die faszinierende Komplementaritat der sozialgeschichtlichen (hier familienstrukturellen) und der mentalitatsgeschichtlichen (hier religioesen) Ursachen aufzudecken.

Birnbaum (1891?1989) is the uncontested pioneer in two large closely related research areas, namely historical Jewish linguistics and the palaeographyof Hebrew and all Jewish successor languages. This collection of essays provides a cross-section through Birnbaum s life s work. Volume I contains articles on Jewish philology and a survey of additional Jewish languages and individual studies. Volume II documents the development of Hebrew palaeography, which began to be established in the period between the 1930s and 1960s."

This volume is dedicated to Walter RAll. The contributors are friends, colleagues, and pupils. The 27 historical articles on German, Yiddish, and Dutch language and literature reflect the dedicatee's wide range of research interests from the Middle Ages to the present (notably the Middle Ages and the early modern age).

Die Sprache der jiddischen Bibelubersetzungstradition ist seit etwa 1400 in reichlichstem Masse durch Handschriften, seit etwa 1535 auch durch Drucke belegt. Ihren Hauptsitz im Leben hat sie im Chejder, der fast ganz dem Elementarstudium der hebraischen Bibel gewidmeten judischen "Grundschule", wo vom Beginn des Aschkenasentums an mindestens die gesamte mannliche Halfte der Bevoelkerung ihre sprachlich formativsten Jahre verbrachte. Der Beitrag dieser UEbersetzungssprache zum Wortschatz (einschliesslich Wortbildung und Idiomatik), ja zur Morphologie der jiddischen Gemeinsprache wurde bisher eklatant unterschatzt. Die Studie erfasst (1) an Hand der ersten hebraisch-jiddischen Bibelkonkordanz (um 1535) moeglichst viele Elemente der Chejdersprache als diskrepant zur standarddeutschen Entwicklung und erklart sie (2) aus dem hebraischen Urtext (wobei haufig die vorjiddischen UEbersetzungen vom Targum bis zur judischfranzoesischen Tradition den Schlussel zum Verstandnis liefern). Sie erweist sie (3) auf dem Weg durch die Bibelglossare und -ubersetzungen als feste Bestandteile der Tradition und dokumentiert (4) ihr Einstroemen in die jiddische Gemeinsprache bis hin zum Standardjiddischen. Ausgewertet wurden rund 120 Texte vom Ende des 14. bis zum 18. Jahrhundert: Bibelglossare und -ubersetzungen, Epik, Lieder, Erzahlprosa, Briefe, Brauchtums-, Erbauungs-, Gebetsliteratur etc. Indem die Studie zeigt, wieviel die im westjiddischen Bereich entstandene UEbersetzungstradition - und durch welche Kanale sie es - dem Gesamtjiddischen vermittelt hat, ist sie zugleich eine Dokumentation der fundamentalen Einheit von West- und Ost-Aschkenas im Sinne von Salomo Birnbaum und Max Weinreich.

This book announces the rediscovery of a major milestone in the history of 16th century European narrative literature. The Yiddish stanza version by humanist Elia Levita or one of his pupils of the AParis and VienneA material imported to Italy from France elevates the subject to unexpected heights. From a narrative viewpoint it accomplishes this by the artistry of its versification and an in-depth perspective modeled largely on Ariosto. In terms of content it is remarkable for the author's inspired gift for observation, which can legitimately be termed 'realistic' and is thus very much ahead of its time. In this connection the work is notable for the way in which it reconciles the sublime with a delightful sense of comedy, a blend discernible throughout the work. Despite its obvious origins in the world of Renaissance Italy, the poem is at the same time embedded in Jewish religion and philosophy, though the reticence with which this is touched in means that it only becomes apparent on very close reading. A complete version of the poem was only rediscovered as recently as 1986. The publication of an edition of the work in Hebrew letters by the Jerusalem Yiddish Studies scholar Chone Shemeruk is in preparation. The present volume is the first to make the work accessible to western readers in a Latin transcription. It also includes a commentary and an introduction to the work's place in literary history.

The author first discusses the fundamental relationship, in Hebrew writing systems, between script and sound, in particular the investigation of this relationship in texts of the past. In the first major section, an exhaustive description of three texts from around 1600 serves as a fixation point for a presentation, based on some 70 texts, of the development of the writing and sound systems from the oldest texts to the demise of written West Yiddish in Germany around 1800. Main subject of the second major section is the gradual distancing of the German component of West Yiddish from all varieties of German. A comparison of the phonetic system with the other linguistic levels shows that West Yiddish achieved its independence from German most readily at the semantic level, more slowly in phonology. In the final chapter the author tries to organize all observed graphic and phonic speech changes according to a few pragmatically intelligible categories.
