Kovalevsky, the first female professor of mathematics, who influenced the development of European science during the last century. Historical notes by G. Mittag-Leffler and copies of official documents related to her life as well as several articles on her life and mathematics are presented. The main articles by J.-E. BjArk describe her life and professorship at Stockholm University. Part two of the volume contains 23 contributions in pure and applied mathematics, and in mathematical physics resulting from the lectures delivered within the program of the symposium.

British Secret Service During the Great War - Accounts of Espionage & Counter-Espionage 1914-18 (Hardcover): Nicholas Everitt British Secret Service During the Great War - Accounts of Espionage & Counter-Espionage 1914-18 (Hardcover)
Nicholas Everitt
R848 Discovery Miles 8 480 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

On His Majesty's Secret Service
The Duke of Wellington famously said that the art of war was discovering what you don't know by what you do-guessing what was on the other side of the hill. The best way to know what was over that hill was to send someone to look for you. The duke was no stranger to scouts, spies and intelligence officers and knew their value. As important as the spying itself was the need to stop enemy agents employed in the same work. By the later 19th century the means by which intelligence work could be undertaken was as a result of developments in communication, transport and technology in all its forms becoming more sophisticated. Countermeasures likewise became more difficult and complex. The decision made by many governments was to formalise the operations of espionage and counterespionage agents into dedicated services. This book, by a member of the British Secret Service, offers an essential insight into intelligence activities during the Great War. The narrative includes the riveting personal experiences and anecdotes of other agents, touches upon the methods used including codes and locating minelayers, and gives an overview of the secret service organisations operating at that time; it concludes with an examination of the 'Casement Affair.' For those interested in the world of the proto-Bond against Imperial Germany this is a highly entertaining read.

About 8000 clinical trials are undertaken annually in all areas of medicine, from the treatment of acne to the prevention of cancer. Correct interpretation of the data from such trials depends largely on adequate design and on performing the appropriate statistical analyses. In this book, the statistical aspects of both the design and analysis of trials are described, with particular emphasis on recently developed methods of analysis.

Multiaccess, Mobility and Teletraffic - Advances in Wireless Networks (Hardcover, 1998 ed.): David Everitt, Michael Rumsewicz Multiaccess, Mobility and Teletraffic - Advances in Wireless Networks (Hardcover, 1998 ed.)
David Everitt, Michael Rumsewicz
R4,208 Discovery Miles 42 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Designers of wireless networks face a problem which is multidimensional in nature, where issues of multiaccess, radio propagation, antennas, mobility and teletraffic all need to be understood and simultaneously addressed in order to create a properly functioning system. This book does not merely concentrate on one of these issues but takes a broader view, and presents a mix of papers addressing systems and networking issues. Multiaccess, Mobility and Teletraffic: Advances in Wireless Networks addresses fundamental theoretical issues about future wireless networks, such as capacity improvements theoretically attainable from spread spectrum systems, and practical concerns associated with current networks such as signalling, implementation of GSM and CDMA networks, and implementation of packet data services over wireless networks. As well as the papers looking at specific technologies, this book contains a number of papers discussing more generic problems in mobile networks, such as issues associated with handoff, resource management, frequency reuse, mobility, signalling and wireless packet networks. Multiaccess, Mobility and Teletraffic: Advances in Wireless Networks covers a broad range of issues associated with wireless networks and provides a very interesting snapshot of the current state-of-the-art. It will be of interest to all researchers and practitioners working in the field of wireless communications and networks.

Food or calorie restriction has been shown in many short-lived animals and the rhesus monkey to prolong life-span. Life-long nutrition studies are not possible in humans because of their long survival. Studies over two to six years in healthy adult humans have, however, shown that a 20% reduction in food or calorie intake slows many indices of normal and disease-related aging. Thus, it is widely believed that long-term reduction in calorie or food intake will delay the onset of age-related diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer, and so prolong life.

Over the last 20 or more years there has been a progressive rise in food intake in many countries of the world, accompanied by a rising incidence of obesity. Thus our increasing food and calorie intake has been linked to the rising incidence of cardiovascular disease and diabetes in early adult life. It is accepted that overeating, accompanied by reduced physical exercise, will lead to more age-related diseases and shortening of life-span. The answer is to reduce our calorie intake, improve our diet, and exercise more. But calorie restriction is extremely difficult to maintain for long periods. How then can we solve this problem?

Edited by a team of highly distinguished academics, this book provides the latest information on the beneficial effects of calorie restriction on health and life-span. This book brings us closer to an understanding at the molecular, cellular and whole organism level of the way forward.

Analyzing Medical Data Using S-PLUS (Hardcover, 2001 ed.): Brian Everitt, Sophia Rabe-Hesketh Analyzing Medical Data Using S-PLUS (Hardcover, 2001 ed.)
Brian Everitt, Sophia Rabe-Hesketh
R4,282 Discovery Miles 42 820 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book covers a range of statistical methods useful in the analysis of medical data, from the simple to the sophisticated, and shows how they may be applied using the latest versions of S-PLUS and S-PLUS 6. In each chapter several sets of medical data are explored and analysed using a mixture of graphical and model fitting approaches. At the end of each chapter the S-PLUS script files are listed, enabling readers to reproduce all the analyses and graphics in the chapter. These script files can be downloaded from a web site. The aim of the book is to show how to use S-PLUS as a powerful environment for undertaking a variety of statistical analyses from simple inference to complex model fitting, and for providing informative graphics. All such methods are of increasing importance in handling data from a variety of medical investigations including epidemiological studies and clinical trials. The mix of real data examples and background theory make this book useful for students and researchers alike. For the former, exercises are provided at the end of each chapter to increase their fluency in using the command line language of the S-PLUS software. Professor Brian Everitt is Head of the Department of Biostatistics and Computing at the Institute of Psychiatry in London and Sophia Rabe-Hesketh is a senior lecturer in the same department. Professor Everitt is the author of over 30 books on statistics including two previously co-authored with Dr. Rabe-Hesketh.

Experimental Aspects of Quantum Computing (Hardcover, 2005 ed.): Henry O. Everitt Experimental Aspects of Quantum Computing (Hardcover, 2005 ed.)
Henry O. Everitt
R4,179 Discovery Miles 41 790 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Practical quantum computing still seems more than a decade away, and researchers have not even identified what the best physical implementation of a quantum bit will be. There is a real need in the scientific literature for a dialogue on the topic of lessons learned and looming roadblocks. This reprint from Quantum Information Processing is dedicated to the experimental aspects of quantum computing and includes articles that 1) highlight the lessons learned over the last 10 years, and 2) outline the challenges over the next 10 years. The special issue includes a series of invited articles that discuss the most promising physical implementations of quantum computing. The invited articles were to draw grand conclusions about the past and speculate about the future, not just report results from the present.

Jess Crilly, Regina Everitt
R1,620 Discovery Miles 16 200 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The demand to decolonise the curriculum has moved from a protest movement at the margins to the centre of many institutions, as reflected by its inclusion in policies and strategies and numerous initiatives in libraries and archives that have responded to the call, and are critically examining their own historic legacies and practices to support institutional and societal change. Narrative Expansions: Interpreting Decolonisation in Academic Libraries explores the ways in which academic libraries are working to address the historic legacies of colonialism, in the context of decolonising the curriculum and the university. It acknowledges and explores the tensions and complexities around the use of the term decolonisation, how it relates to other social justice aims and approaches, including critical librarianship, and what makes this work specific to decolonisation. The book is international in scope, and considers the contextual nature of decolonisation, with discussion of the impacts of settler colonialism, and post-colonial contexts with authors from Canada, the United States and Kenya, as well as universities and the British Library in the UK. Split into two sections, the book first addresses experiential contexts, discussing the environment in which the academic library is enmeshed: legacy knowledge systems, the neo-liberal university, the pervasive Whiteness of the higher education sector, the global publishing industry – how these structures are constitutive of coloniality and how they can be challenged. It then brings together theory and practice featuring case studies interpreting what it means to 'decolonise' in information literacy, collection management, inclusive spaces, LIS education, research methods and knowledge production through the lens of critical pedagogy, critical information literacy and Critical Race Theory (CRT). The book also addresses the impact and implications of the Whiteness of university library staffing. Bringing together the theory and practice of an area of critical concern to the academy, this book is an important reference for academic librarians, educators and researchers in LIS, education and sociology.

Many new tests of gravity and, in particular, of Einstein's general relativity theory will be carried out in the near future: The Lense--Thirring effect and the equivalence principle will be tested in space; moreover, gravitational waves will be detected, and new atomic interferometers and clocks will be built for measurements in gravitational and inertial fields. New high-precision devices have made these experiments feasible. They will contribute to a better understanding of gravitational physics. Both experimental developments and the theoretical concepts are collected in this volume. Exhaustive reviews give an overall insight into the subject of experimental gravitation.

Inequalities continue to play an essential role in mathematics. The subject is per haps the last field that is comprehended and used by mathematicians working in all the areas of the discipline of mathematics. Since the seminal work Inequalities (1934) of Hardy, Littlewood and P6lya mathematicians have laboured to extend and sharpen the earlier classical inequalities. New inequalities are discovered ev ery year, some for their intrinsic interest whilst others flow from results obtained in various branches of mathematics. So extensive are these developments that a new mathematical periodical devoted exclusively to inequalities will soon appear; this is the Journal of Inequalities and Applications, to be edited by R. P. Agar wal. Nowadays it is difficult to follow all these developments and because of lack of communication between different groups of specialists many results are often rediscovered several times. Surveys of the present state of the art are therefore in dispensable not only to mathematicians but to the scientific community at large. The study of inequalities reflects the many and various aspects of mathemat ics. There is on the one hand the systematic search for the basic principles and the study of inequalities for their own sake. On the other hand the subject is a source of ingenious ideas and methods that give rise to seemingly elementary but nevertheless serious and challenging problems. There are many applications in a wide variety of fields from mathematical physics to biology and economics."
