This book is an attempt to make something unified of the accumulations of a lifetime of thoughts and impressions can be likened unto an archeologist piecing together random shards and bones in an effort to establish the culture of an ancient society.

Community Based Research (CBR) refers to collaborative investigation by academics and non-academic community members that fosters positive change on a local level. Despite recent trends towards engaged scholarship, few publications demonstrate how to effectively integrate CBR into academic course work or take advantage of its potential for achieving community change. Community Based Research: Teaching for Community Impact fills these gaps by providing: an overview of language and methods used by professionals engaged in CBR; a framework for orienting CBR toward concrete community outcomes; effective ways to integrate CBR into course content, student-driven projects, and initiatives spanning disciplines, curricula, campuses and countries; and lessons learned in working towards positive outcomes for students and in communities.

Problems of development in what is normally called the Third World have been a subject matter of concern of the social sciences, lespecially of eco nomics, for over two decades now. 1 Between the late 1950s and the current time, as Chapter 2 attempts to show, the emphasis seems to have shifted from purely economic considerations of underdevelopment to a paradigm that includes other, extra-economic considerations of a social, political, and cultural nature. The recent emergence of development studies as a new social science discipline stems precisely from the methodological premise that development is a complex process that can only be adequately under of a stood, analyzed, and alleviated by a cross-disciplinary approach instead 2 wholly unidisciplinary one. We do not wish to challenge the above proposition. However, it remains of certain economic phenomena that pose problems true that an assessment of to developing countries can offer us greater insights into problems development, including the formulation of appropriate policies aimed at improving socioeconomic conditions in such countries. is restrictive business practices. This study is con One such phenomenon of restrictive business practices as they cerned mainly with surveying aspects relate to problems of development in the Third World. Restrictive business xiii xiv INTRODUCTION practices are not confined to developing countries; however, limited work seems to have been conducted in terms of relating the concept of restrictive business practices to problems of development. The existing evidence of restrictive business practices in the development process is quite fragmen tary."
It is probably true, as the editor of these essays and studies by Ragnar Frisch points out, that the majority of economists are not well aware of the contributions made to their discipline by Frisch. This certainly does not apply, however, to econometricians. In fact, Frisch was one of the founding fathers of the Econometric Society and, for the first decade of its existence, its recognized leader in Europe. The annual European meetings were inspired by his enthusiasm, his unprecedented didactic talents and his amazingly diversified contributions. It is also clear that those members of the Swedish Academy of Sciences who selected candidates for the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Science, were fully aware of Ragnar Frisch's pathbreaking work when they decided to award him that famous Prize. While much of Frisch's earlier work has been published, in his later years of activity he harqly took the time to shape the results of his work in an optimal way for wider circulation. Although an impressively lucid writer, he evidently gave priority to solu tions of some of the planning problems he was involved in rather than to formulating them in the characteristically crystal-clear and well-structured expositions of earlier years. I very much welcome, therefore, Dr Long's initiative to make available to a wider public within the profession some of the few texts Frisch himself produced, probably under pressure from his immediate friends and col leagues."

The Church, once lifted to high expectations, is now labeled and placed in a jar of shame. As a result, today's Spiritual Climate has taken on new meanings. "Pulpit Confessions" is a story of lies, sex, murder and family deceit, and one person's plot to gain total control. When Bishop Raymond Miller Jr.'s Pulpit Confessions are revealed all hell will break loose and not even the revered pastor will be able to stop it. With a writing style that takes you into every emotion of each character, Mr. Long gives you a prime example of what happens when the eroticism of Zane meets the Spirituality of T.D. Jakes. Unlike many authors in the genre of Christian Fiction, Peron F. Long breaks all barriers stepping out with no boundaries to create a thrilling tale giving the old saying "The Devil Made Me Do It," a brand new meaning.
Commodore David Dixon Porter made history when he took the USS "Essex" into the Pacific and crippled the British whaling industry during the War of 1812. While the first to suggest that the U.S. Navy force open Japan, he was also court-martialed for his unauthorized invasion of Spanish Puerto Rico. He later sought to reverse his fortunes in the Mexican Navy, and consistently suffered chaos in his personal and financial affairs. "Nothing Too Daring" offers an objective, thoroughly researched biography of one of America's most colorful naval officers.
During the first six decades of the Twentieth Century, Southern California boasted a comprehensive network of suburban electrically powered trains and trolleys. Known as the Pacific Electric, it was the world's largest interurban electric system. In their bright red livery, the Red Cars went everywhere. Lines extended along the beaches from Balboa to Santa Monica Canyon; from the cool snow covered alpine heights of Mount Lowe to the hot dry sandy desert of the San Fernando Valley; and from Los Angeles to the rural orange groves of Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. At its peak, Pacific Electric operated 6,200 trains daily over 1,061 miles of track. Raphael Long was there at mid-century photographing the system during its final years under Pacific Electric management. Presented here are 230 images from Mr. Long's private collection. Red Car Era is filled with memories of a Southern California and Pacific Electric Railway that once was and will never be again.

"Blue Mountain Memories," Richard Long's current book, resulted from his building a vacation cabin at Blue Mountain in 1972. The mountain was in the great range of 5 million Shenandoah Valley acres owned by Lord Fairfax of Winchester. As a young man, George Washington was hired by Lord Fairfax in 1748 to be his surveyor. It is likely that Washington surveyed what was later to become Blue Mountain. Mosby's Rangers, the Southern guerilla fighters of the Civil War, hid out on the Mountain and made raids, from there, on Union forces. The earliest settlers of what was to become Blue Mountain and nearby Rattlesnake Mountain were escaped slaves. A community still exists on Rattlesnake that is proud of its African-American ancestors. The mountain came alive again in 1955 when an exuberant Frenchman and his wife, Henry and Colette de Longfief, purchased 800 acres from lumberman James McDonald. They named it Blue Mountain. This book is about the fascinating history of the mountain and the people from all over the world who eventually settled on the mountain.
