Databases have been designed to store large volumes of data and to provide efficient query interfaces. Semantic Web formats are geared towards capturing domain knowledge, interlinking annotations, and offering a high-level, machine-processable view of information. However, the gigantic amount of such useful information makes efficient management of it increasingly difficult, undermining the possibility of transforming it into useful knowledge.

The research presented by De Virgilio, Giunchiglia and Tanca tries to bridge the two worlds in order to leverage the efficiency and scalability of database-oriented technologies to support an ontological high-level view of data and metadata. The contributions present and analyze techniques for semantic information management, by taking advantage of the synergies between the logical basis of the Semantic Web and the logical foundations of data management. The book's leitmotif is to propose models and methods especially tailored to represent and manage data that is appropriately structured for easier machine processing on the Web.

After two introductory chapters on data management and the Semantic Web in general, the remaining contributions are grouped into five parts on Semantic Web Data Storage, Reasoning in the Semantic Web, Semantic Web Data Querying, Semantic Web Applications, and Engineering Semantic Web Systems. The handbook-like presentation makes this volume an important reference on current work and a source of inspiration for future development, targeting academic and industrial researchers as well as graduate students in Semantic Web technologies or database design.

The refereed proceedings of the 4th International and Interdisciplinary Conference on Modeling and Using Context, CONTEXT 2003, held in Stanford, CA, USA in June 2003. The 31 full papers and 15 short papers presented were carefully reviewed, selected, and revised for inclusion in the book. The papers presented deal with the interdisciplinary topic of modeling and using context from various points of view, ranging through cognitive science, formal logic, artifical intelligence, computational intelligence, philosophical and psychological aspects, and information processing. Highly general philosophical and theoretical issues are complemented by specific applications in various fields.

Cooperative Information Systems have emerged as a central concept in a variety of applications, projects, and systems in the new era of e-business. The conference at which the papers in this volume were presented was the ninth international conference on the topic of Cooperative Information Systems (CoopIS 2001), and was held in Trento, Italy on September 5-7, 2001. Like the previous conferences, CoopIS 2001 has been remarkably successful in bringing together representatives of many di?erent ?elds, spanning the entire range of e?ective web-based Cooperative Information Systems, and with interests ranging from industrial experience to original research concepts and results. The 29 papers collected here out of the 79 ones that were submitted, dem- strate well the range of results achieved in several areas such as agent te- nologies, models and architectures, web systems, information integration, m- dleware technologies, federated and multi-database systems. The papers th- selves, however, do not convey the lively excitement of the conference itself, and the continuing spirit of cooperation and communication across disciplines that has been the hallmark of these conferences. We would especially like to thank our keynote speakers: Philip A. Bernstein (Microsoft Research, USA), Edward E. Cobb (BEA Systems, USA), and Ma- izio Lenzerini (Universit'a di Roma "La Sapienza", Italy) for providing a portrait of the best contemporary work in the ?eld.
