This book highlights how to conduct research in gifted education when researchers have to choose from myriad theoretical ideas, hypotheses, claims, practical models, and strategies. It shows researchers how to build clarity, rigor, and relevance into a research agenda that combats fragmentation and contributes to enhanced theoretical and practical endeavors in the field. Specifically, Paradigms of Gifted Education advocates a paradigmatic approach to conducting research in gifted education and shows how it can be done every step of the way by specifying the essential questions of What?, Why?, Who?, and How? in a coherent manner, and by selecting methods that are appropriate for the question asked and the phase of the research efforts. To facilitate the development of a research agenda, the book identifies three major paradigms of gifted education and 20 essential research questions that would help move the field forward.

It also looks at how local residents' lifestyle, culture and demands might be reflected and respected in design process.

This book presents a systematic study of an emerging field in the development of multi-agent systems. In a wide spectrum of applications, it is now common to see that multiple agents work cooperatively to accomplish a complex task. The book assists the implementation of such applications by promoting the ability of multi-agent systems to track - using local communication only - the mean value of signals of interest, even when these change rapidly with time and when no individual agent has direct access to the average signal across the whole team; for example, when a better estimation/control performance of multi-robot systems has to be guaranteed, it is desirable for each robot to compute or track the averaged changing measurements of all the robots at any time by communicating with only local neighboring robots. The book covers three factors in successful distributed average tracking: algorithm design via nonsmooth and extended PI control; distributed average tracking for double-integrator, general-linear, Euler-Lagrange, and input-saturated dynamics; and applications in dynamic region-following formation control and distributed convex optimization. It figures out that the experience of Liaoning province is relatively successful and can be of great significance for developing countries and regions. The issue of slums is a huge challenge in the process of global urbanization. The population living in slums is 0.8 billion worldwide and the number is still growing. International organizations (e.g., the World Bank) and relevant countries have been working on the rebuilding of slums but only a few succeeded. In recent years, since some scholars believe that government should play dominant role in slums rebuilding, Liaoning province has developed a systematical model in slums rebuilding from 2005. This model emphasizes the guidance of government, market functions and society involvement. With the application of the new model, Liaoning province has improved 2.11 million people’s living conditions from 2005 to 2010. By introducing the conditions, history, rebuilding process and rebuilding methods of Liaoning slums, this book provides new information and data for slum rebuilding decision makers and researchers.

Buoyant plumes are characterized by a distinct contrast in properties between plume and ambient water. An understanding of their physics is crucial for interdisciplinary study of estuarine and coastal regions because discharge flow is often a source of nutrients, biological species, sediment, and toxic contaminants. This book investigates the nature of physical processes associated with near field buoyant plumes, and describes the relationship between processes. Two field sites, one thermal plume in Massachusetts, USA, and the Merrimack River plume, Massachusetts, USA are studied. Observed mixing in the near-field of the thermal plume is driven by bottom friction. The industrial plume studied here is dynamically similar to larger geophysical plumes, but differs in important aspects that can be fully characterized by the initial aspect ratio of the discharging plume. Estimates of three non-dimensional parameters, which represent mixing, spreading, and the bulk Richardson number, suggest that a quadratic relationship exists between mixing and spreading for the river plume. Estimates also yielded time scales for turbulence evolution that are consistent with values in literature.

Distributed feedback (DFB) lasers allow the generation of pulses with narrow linewidth, and are compact tunable laser sources for applications in integrated optics. In this thesis, for the first time, dynamic DFB lasing action was achieved in a reflection pumping configuration instead of the traditional transmission pumping one. A tunable one- dimensional (1-D) DFB photonic crystal (PC) created by transient interference pattern of two crossing pump beams was obtained in dye doped laser media, which indicated the existence of an index modulation. The polarization modulation, realized by readily manipulating the state of polarization of the pumping beams, was demonstrated effective in providing feedback for DFB lasing oscillation in the reflection pumping configuration. A tunable chiral photonic DFB structure was observed in certain polarization pumping schemes, which can be identified as a dynamic polarization dependent chiral PC. Tunable circularly-polarized laser output was obtained.
